Memory Alpha claims it's because Hines was "unhappy with his performance," but I haven't heard that before and there's no citation for the claim. I have the impression that it was just a matter of scheduling -- the noise of the running water in the aqueduct component of the set required redubbing all the actors' lines, and Hines was unavailable to do the redubbing, so someone else had to be brought in. I don't remember where I got that from, though, so I can't be certain it's right.
I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in the TNG Companion.
No, I checked the Companion first thing, and it just says "Actor Grainger Hines' dialogue all had to be dubbed in by another actor, and he asked that his name be pulled." Perhaps the person writing the Memory Alpha entry got the cause and effect backward there.
I always thought the same thing. Hines' performance was fairly expressive, but the voice belonged to a stiff.
Its rather obvious that it was dubbed in; however, I always assumed that the dubbed voice was the same guy. I didn't realize it was even a different actor's voice.
I remember when the episode first came out I noticed the dubbing. Sticks out like a sore thumb. I'd always been of the same opinion as Christopher. Virtually all of his lines take place in front of that waterfall. For whatever reason he couldnt be there for the dubbing.
Seems rather excessive to remove your name just because of the performance.
^Not if you were embarrassed by the bad dubbing - and by a different voice - and wanted to disassociate yourself from it as much as possible.
Mind, it's unusual for an major guest star actor to go uncredited even if outside factors do mean they're dubbed by someone else, so presumably he was unhappy with the end result (whether because he didn't like the vocal performance or he just didn't like the idea of someone else dubbing him, even if it was due to his own unavailability).
A random if slightly related aside aside: Bruce Willis apparently hates doing ADR and its often done by other actors. I once had a drink with the Transformers voice actor who dubbed the lines that needed dubbing for him in Armageddon. "When he's shouting at Ben Afflek on the oil rig...that's me!"

I just rewatched this. I hadn't even noticed, because I'd never been paying attention to it. Now I can see it's noticeable, but it's not terrible. The guy isn't in the episode all that much. Plus, the character is such a close-minded twit, that the fact that the ADR is a little wooden and unconvincing is oddly fitting for the character lol

As a rule, re-opening threads that are gone from the first few pages of the forum is discouraged.
i was just watching and noticed for the first time.. i looked it up and found this forum from search engine. Glad to know it is indeed dubbing.. i was confused it sounds like a foreign film with voice over.

Ms. Moonfall, your instincts are correct on both "mistakes" - and - it doesn't really matter. You will quickly learn to recognize what threads are current topics. You can also look through the first few pages for a topic, for instance, "Does Data own a toothbrush" and upon not finding it, start a new thread. No moderator is going to scold you for such lapses of decorum unless you make a continuous habit of it so post freely and prosper.
