GODZILLA's roar...

Godzilla's roar...

I watched some of the first Godzilla movie a couple days ago...but my son tired of it and we turned it off. But the roar he uses in that movie doesn't sound like the roar that came later on..

Did they make new roars for Godzilla? Or was it a stock sound they just used over and over and over??

And did they have rights to it? Because they didn't use it in the cartoon, but I did hear it once on a Star Trek cartoon I think.

So, you Godzilla buffs, what is the deal with the Gmans roar?

A rubber glove being rubbed over a stringed instrument (not sure which one) is what made his original roar. It was refined over the first few films until it came to a point where they just used a recording in the showa series. I believe that they did the rubber glove technique as well as adding some more animal sounds in for the Heisei series, especially 1985. The Millennium roar was basically the same.

Thanks..so in the Heisei series (my favorite) it wasn't just stock from the 60s 70s movies, right? Money is riding on a bet over this..

Yeah, if you rewatch 1985 you can distinctly hear more animalistic sounds in his roar than from the Showa series.

I had heard that it also used a backwards recording of a bull elephant's roar. The Trek cartoon was 'Yesteryear' and the roar of the lemataya that threatened young Spock and I'Chiya was indeed G's.

I don't know if your son would be any more impressed, but I strongly suggest watching it in its original version w/o Raymond Burr. Also, the second B&W film, Godzilla Raids Again, is light-years better in its original version.

Supposedly, they gave a donkey some laxatives and recorded the distinct roar coming from the donkey's rear when it let it rip.
