I thought Fringe was a typical example of style over substance. And while I like style I think that substance is more important. It's too early to properly judge the series, though. But I really hope Star Trek XI won't be like that.
Gotta agree. I sure hope it isn't an indication of the quality we can expect from their Star Trek writing.I have to admit, I was underwhelmed. It felt like a rehash of other similar shows, and I alternated between being bored and just having that been there, done that feeling.
Bingo, the unoriginal writing was very reminiscent of why I disliked Threshold (the abortive TV series). However, I'll give Braga, or whoever did the casting, credit - Carla Gugino, Peter Dinklage, Brent Spiner and whoever the nerdy guy was, were all good choices for those roles. If I didn't know better I'd say Brannon Braga wrote it.
I didn't even think the style was all that hot.I thought Fringe was a typical example of style over substance.
I predicted her boyfriend would die as soon as I saw him. It was the "I love you" thing.
Except with Fringe there's no aliens and supernatural creatures...Does anyone else realize "Fringe" is the exact same show as the X-files?
What I get from "Fringe" - and from "The Transformers," as well - is that Orci and Kurzman usually deliver what they set out to deliver.![]()
Well, I guess they set out to deliver a nonsensical run-of-the-mill and worst of all BORING sci-fi show then.
If I had seen The Cage and prejudged, I'd have hated TOS before seeing another episode.

I don't really think the quality or lack thereof of this pilot relates to Star Trek all that much.

I hope to God you're right.
If Fringe is any indication of the quality of the upcoming Star Trek film, then we're in for a major, major disappointment. And this is coming from somebody who has been very excited about the new Star Trek movie.
Style over substance is the understatement of the year when it comes to the Fringe pilot.
