"Fringe", and How It Does or Does Not Relate to Star Trek XI

I thought Fringe was a typical example of style over substance. And while I like style I think that substance is more important. It's too early to properly judge the series, though. But I really hope Star Trek XI won't be like that.

I suspect that Fringe will last... at least I hope it will. And, IMO, that help Trek XI. Any good publicity for Abrams & co. can only help Trek XI.

I saw this post the day before I watched it. I was hoping that you were talking about how incredibly awesome Fringe was and that it meant that Trek XI would be so incredible that we would all shoot our load out of extreme excitement. Then I watched it. It was bland. I predicted her boyfriend would die as soon as I saw him. It was the "I love you" thing. Instant death warrant. Predictable as hell and lacking in energy.

Edit: I can just feel that we will be strung along trying to find out every secret and the writers won't even figure out what the secrets are beforehand so you won't have a chance to guess them. They won't even know! So you will watch for years and the secrets will be so lame that when you find out, you won't even care. Then there will be a lame movie.

I have to admit, I was underwhelmed. It felt like a rehash of other similar shows, and I alternated between being bored and just having that been there, done that feeling.
Gotta agree. I sure hope it isn't an indication of the quality we can expect from their Star Trek writing. :wtf:

Also hope it's not an indication of their judgment in the casting process, because the lead characters being played by dull and/or annoying actors contributed to the problem of the whole thing being an X-Files rehash, but without Duchovny and Anderson.

If I didn't know better I'd say Brannon Braga wrote it.
Bingo, the unoriginal writing was very reminiscent of why I disliked Threshold (the abortive TV series). However, I'll give Braga, or whoever did the casting, credit - Carla Gugino, Peter Dinklage, Brent Spiner and whoever the nerdy guy was, were all good choices for those roles.

I thought Fringe was a typical example of style over substance.
I didn't even think the style was all that hot. Look at a show like Dexter or hey, even Lost - there's style. The fact that the music was cribbed from Lost is one reason I hated Fringe's style. They were trying, but it all came off so flat and artificial.

I'll check the rating thread next week in lieu of watching this thing and if everyone is ranting about it being a 10,000% improvement, I'll reconsider but this show has got to get one hell of a lot better before it's watchable by my standards.
I predicted her boyfriend would die as soon as I saw him. It was the "I love you" thing.

Okay how many people were yelling at the screen YOU FOOL! YOU'RE DEAD! That was the best part of the episode for me, talk about obvious.

If Fringe is any indication of the quality of the upcoming Star Trek film, then we're in for a major, major disappointment. And this is coming from somebody who has been very excited about the new Star Trek movie.

Style over substance is the understatement of the year when it comes to the Fringe pilot.

The previews sure made it look like the X-Files, though. My immediate reaction to the ads I saw was "That's it, after all this hype? Dull." Wasn't even interested in watching it after that.

And I gotta say, the negative reactions in this thread do not have me hopeful for the creative forces behind Trek XI. :(

What I get from "Fringe" - and from "The Transformers," as well - is that Orci and Kurzman usually deliver what they set out to deliver. :techman:

Well, I guess they set out to deliver a nonsensical run-of-the-mill and worst of all BORING sci-fi show then.

I surely hope that they set their standards a little bit higher for the Star Trek movie.

Definitely a matter of opinion. In any event, it is as they have described it. That itself would be a novelty for "Star Trek" in the last fifteen years.

Did anyone actually watch the end of Fringe before stating that the boyfriend is dead? or watch the previews of future shows?
Last thing we see is the one-armed woman having the boyfriend questioned after he's dead. Previews show him in at least one scene... then again I've never rushed to judge an entire series based on the pilot. If I had seen The Cage and prejudged, I'd have hated TOS before seeing another episode.

Does anyone else realize "Fringe" is the exact same show as the X-files?

Yeah, pretty much. It was like the X-Files did a crossover with Dawson's Creek, Lost (and introducing Scary Mysterious Black Guy as... Scary Mysterious Black Guy), and Boston Legal. Hopefully they'll bring in Van Der Beek to play the inevitable Frankenstein's monster (no makeup needed!) and Pacey can be morally conflicted when they have to kill their creation. The possibilities for angst are endless.

I was bored to tears by the pilot until things finally started to pick up towards the end, but pilots frequently suck so I'll give it a chance for a while. Some of my favorite shows had terrible pilots.

I don't really think the quality or lack thereof of this pilot relates to Star Trek all that much.

There's bound to be similarities to the X-Files considering that's one of the influences on Fringe along with Night Stalker which was an inspiration for X-Files.

One thing about the pilot was it was filmed during the writers strike so it may not have gotten a final rewrite which I do think it needed. I rewatched it last night and liked it more.

Absolutely right. If Fringe, M-I:III, and Transformers (all style over substance, IMO) is what we can expect from these writers, I'm very concerned about ST XI.

I can't be "concerned over ST XI." To quote from TNG (gawd how nerdish) "Data, they were already dead. What more could have happened to them?"
