EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

With Villa I expect a 4-5-1 from Aragones which means Fabregas will be starting. If Spain don't choke then they should win this comfortably.

Cesc = Pure Class.

And Villa being out of the Final saves the selection headache for Aragones.

Not much of a first half, but the second was lively and all Spain. Arshavin who I thought was angling for player of the tournament, went completely missing. Kept having to pause my DVR to make sure he was still on the pitch. I wonder if clubs will still be falling all over themselves to buy him? By all reports he excelled in the UEFA Cup, so maybe so.

Germany/Spain. On paper it looks like a good one.

I'm sure he is still wanted. His somewhat disappointing performance in the game was more on the Spanish players being able to block him at all times, then his lack of abilities.

Major news for GERMANY...

Germany captain Michael Ballack is a doubt for Sunday's Euro 2008 final against Spain because of a calf muscle injury.

UEFA have well & Truly gone loopy...

The European Championships in 2016 are on course to be expanded from 16 to 24 teams after Uefa's 53 member countries gave the proposal universal support.

^^^
It's probaby tactics to claim Ballack might not play - I guess he wouldn't want to miss that match even if his leg had to be amputated. ;)

And what's so terrible about the expansion of the Euro?

24 teams how would that work out...2 extra groups or make every group 6 teams ??? Whats the point why does it not need changing if you don't qualify then tough just suck it up, ENG had too and I would rather ENG not Q/F than get in because its been expanded for money reasons.

We will get more average teams in it that doesn't deserve to be there.

They are going to make Euros have the same format as the WC. 8 groups with 4 rounds of knockout games.

Might as well invite the Argies and the Seleção over also.

If you look back at the qualifying groups for Euro2008, it would still be difficult. And all the really weak teams still wouldn't have a chance. And just one more game for the eventual winner.

If we have 4 groups of 6 thats 2 extra games and only one if we have 6 groups of 4 but then only 2 runners up from 6 groups would Q/F for final 8 and that is stupid.

The format is fine the way it is...top 2 Q/F for EURO cup and then 16 teams battle it out. UEFA branded THE.FA greedy for wanting a 39th PL game for money and then UEFA go and pull this stunt.

^ They might do it the way FIFA did the World Cup a while back (for instance in 94). They had six groups of four. The top two teams from each group qualified, plus the four best third teams. So you had 16 teams going through.

Third place teams do not deserve to Q/F for any cup never mind make the knockout stages of a Major Final, it just makes a pure mockery of the whole cup.

The EURO finals should be for the teams who deserve to be there and UEFA have done this because they were worried about the money lossed due to no ENG and they almost lost Portugal/France/Italy as well in the Q/F. At the end of the day it should be about competition and not who brings in the most money cause lets face it no major team would fail to Q/F if the top 3 were allowed to make it to the finals.

Meh I still like my 8 groups of 3 with the round robin format better.

One less set of group stage games and one more set of knockout games.

Nothing is wrong with the current format but I don't think there are any negatives to extending the European Championship to 24 teams either.

In fact there are potential upsides like more dramatic knockout games.

Also I want the draw to be eliminated in the group stage games. There must be a winner as decided by the usual rules in the knockout games.

The match Germany vs Turkey was watched by 32.7 million people in Germany, ie 40% of the population. What I find especially interesting is that more women than men watched the game ... used to be that people talked about 'football widows' during tournaments.

I don't recall the 1986/1990/1994 World Cups being a mockery of football. In fact, both 1990 and 1994 had one of the lucky losers making it all the way to the final.

No support don't I feel alone

Whats wrong with the current format ?

Nothing.

There's nothing wrong with the new format either.

Overall a good final and a very successful EURO 2008 IMO...

Spain was the better team in the final and overall in EURO, Germany weren't that great but Spain were pretty special this year and nice that a team who won it were unbeaten all the way through.

A delighful goal by Torres and Spain should of had more in the end.
