DS9 model?

How many models of DS9 were there? IN some shots the station looks brown and others it looks dark gray. Was there more than one model or was the difference in appearance all lighting?

As far as I know there were only two models used for DS9, a 6 foot physical model which was later replaced by a CGI model.

For what it's worth, for years I had the same problem with TNG. In my youth, I could've bet money that the ENT-D was a sort of beige color. In fact, whenever I think about it in retrospect, the ENT-D is still a sort of beige in my mind. I blame poor recordings of the episodes during syndication on FOX, combined with the replicative power of a 17-inch off-brand television in the late 80's - early 90s. :)

Seriously, though, the colors they employed for both DS9 (the station) and the Ent-D were so color-neutral that the slightest abberation in broadcast medium could change them from shit-brown to almost pewter in color. Looking at the TMP-era Enterprise's eggshell white coloration is like drinking a cool glass of water by comparison.

If I worked for Crayola, and were tasked with creating a crayon used to represent the Ent-D's hull, I'd call it... 'dull'. ;)

I personally don't know much about the models or how many there were, but in regards to Station DS9 and colors, even today I have no friggin clue what its official color is.

In most shots on the show, the station looks like a dark purple, then others it looks dark gray, then other episodes, like when the Dominion took over the station, the station shifted to an off-cardassian yellow and then to a tan color..... and when I was younger, I built a DS9 model which told me to paint the thing Cardassian Yellow, but that looked totally screwed compared to what you saw on TV.

If DS9 was actually supposed to be a Cardassian yellow like their ships.... then why the heck didn't it look like their ships??

Maybe the official color of DS9 was "Cameleon" ~ ie: the Station's color depended on who was operating it and the mood the station had that day. *shrugs*

I think there must have been at least two physical models: The regular one and the one they blew up for Visionary.

Personally, I don't think I ever noticed any big color differences with the station.

I think that there was only one "hero" model that was used regularly over the seven seasons. IIRC, they also built a few extra "pieces" "of the station (like part of the habitat ring 'n such) so that they could move in closer for certain shots. The station wasn't replaced with a CGI model until the finale, when it was used for the pull-back final shot of the series.

I agree that the actual color of the station is difficult to figure out... the lighting seemed to change and really impacted the way the station looked. I always figured it was some sort of dark dirty gray/brown.

maybe they umm, had it repainted or something.

were there ever any model kits available? might be kinda cool to have one of those hangin from my ceiling.

Yeah, I had a model when I was younger and it told me to paint the thing yellow'ish.

Let me see if I can find it online:

And yet, some painted the model this way:

Also, I found this:

So I still don't know

Almost, but not quite correct. Early on, there was only one model. And yes, toward the end of the show, stock footage aside, they used a CG model. However, sometime during the middle of the show's run, they built another physical model. It was not of the whole station, just a more detailed section of the promenade.

Here it is, from "His Way." Notice the detail of the prominade that was not in the early seasons.
