Dogs in Star Trek

It hit me today, watching an episode of Voyager that has a dog in, and also watching an ad for Enterprise, which also has a dog as the captains pet, that dogs cant speak. Can anyone please tell me why, among all the species in the world of star trek, why dogs are the only thing I have ever noticed to not speak english (with the comm badges and all..).

If anyone knows the answer to this i'd love to hear it?

Thanks

I have not seen any of the non-sentient species shown in Star Trek speak. Targ, Vulcan cats, Picard's fish, etc... Dogs certainly fall into that category.

Hm. A Vulcan mind-meld might just work. Even if a dog can't formulate complex thoughts, it can certainly ciommunicate ideas.

*Cue mysterious vulcan music*
Spock: "My mind. To your mind. My thoughts. To your thoughts... Cookie. Want. Cookie. Want. TEN. Cookies. Ass itches. Where's my chewtoy? Ear itches. Ball? Where's my cookies?"

Well, if it works on Whales... :p

Janeway?
;)
{Smacks Ethros' nose with a rolled-up newspaper.} :p

Voyager had that episode with Paris on trial for murder, which featured a perfectly ordinary dog living in the farthest depths of the Delta Quadrant. :cardie: Klingons, Cardassian missiles, rogue Starfleet officers, lost 21st Century space capsules and the like are absurd enough. But how in the hell did a dog end up on a random planet of the Delta Quadrant?

TNG, 1st season, dog-people vs snake-people. I don't remember the species name because, like, who cares?

I don't know if it's canon, but Spot had a 3 minute monologue regarding why he sabotaged the dog communication technology. You see, cats hate dogs, and they don't want the dogs blabbing on and on about how horrible and evil cats are.

Dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, or any of our furry friends would be able to communicate things like, "hungry!", "Go away!", Hurt!" via the Universal Translator. You don't believe me? My cat has different meows and purrs for hunger, wanting attention, being let outside, etc. Dogs have different barks and growls and tail wags as well. A successful UT program would master this first before worrying about Andorian and Xindi.

You're can may have different meows for those things, but how about a can from another country? I doubt it has the same meows for the same meanings. How many cat languages would there be, if they have a unified language?
