If they're planning on using a mars-cycler type system with long flight times , it might make sense.

I find it funny how essentially ULA bankrolled part of its development by using the same engines, when the Vulcan will probably ultimately by noncompetitive to the New Glenn and Falcon IX.
Some performance shortfall of Starship…50 ton payload as-is…so a stretch.
Starship’s empty weight is 220,000 pounds or so. SLS core block comes in at 188,000 empty.
I wonder…if air-start RS-25s could be had…maybe a one off SuperHeavy with solids…might an SLS make it all the way to the Moon?
Soft land horizontally, and refuel there with ISRU, as opposed to endless tanker flights with standard Starship—that can come later.

I think horizontal landing would be quite difficult.
At this point, you have close to empty tankage…hypergolic placements…a one time deal. Popcorning foam not an issue here.
