Christopher Eccleston's Reason for leaving

From his own mouth, apparently...

At an acting master class, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Christopher Eccleston was asked why he left, such a high paid job like Doctor Who. He responded:
“I left Doctor Who, because I could not get along with the senior people. I left, because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye, with them. I didn’t agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up, around the series. So, I left. I felt, over a principle. I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay, was to eat a lot of shit. I’m not being funny about that.

Folks should really click through the link and read the whole article. He certainly doesn't seem bitter about the show, just the people who ran it. If anything he seems like he really enjoyed playing the Doctor. Perhaps now that Who has had a complete behind the scenes overhaul he's willing to come back for the 50th Anniversary?

He was on the radio recently and made it quite clear that he had no desire to go back.

If I ever do meet Keith Boak though, I will kick his fucking head in.

I read the link and still have no clear idea why he left.

Politics? The culture around the show? I don't get these at all. The rest seems to be about taking direction but what has that got to do with politics or the show's culture?

So basically...Eccleston didn't like being told what to do and no one was listening to his opinion because he refused to kiss ass (perhaps even literally).

While it sounds about right from what we've heard before I'm not sure how credible Bad Wilf is as a source. Anyone familiar with them? And if I ever become obscenely rich I'm going to make PSAs about how to spell the word lose.

I'm still crossing my fingers hoping we get to see at least 1 quick scene between Eccleston & Smith. I think their 2 different approaches to the show would clash beautifully.

He also doesn't seem to like the older fans too much. Reportedly, Sophie Aldred (Who played Ace in the original series) tried to talk him into appearing at conventions, but he refused.

There's no requirement that an actor appear at conventions. Paul McGann didn't attend conventions for the longest time.

Why on Earth would he want to? I know people are used to actors who are in it for the money and the fame but Eccleston is one of those rare people who only cares about the craft of acting. And when he makes crap like 'GI Joe' or 'Gone In 60 Seconds' he's completely upfront about doing it to make money to pay the bills so he can keep doing the work he loves.

Yeah, I don't see anything odd in an actor not wanting to attend or get involved in the convention scene. There is this weird thing with a lot of fans who can't understand that for a lot of actors, their appearance in show X was simply another job and not some defining moment of their life.

I can certainly understand him leaving if, for whatever reason, he didn't like the culture, politics, or whatever. Certainly, he and everyone has the right to leave a situation that they don't like regardless of what others think.

However, having said that, he should at least be open to the idea of coming back for a brief appearance now that the personnel has been changed from top to bottom! Again, he certainly has the right to refuse but hopefully at least he'd check it out and consider it. I'd love to see him appear with Smith (or some other Doctor).

Except that he categorically ruled out a return, even though the production staff has changed entirely and he thought that Moffat wrote him the best script of his tenure, on the Graham Norton show a few months ago. He's well aware that the people who caused him problems are gone from the scene. He's just not interested in returning to the role.
