Christmas Watch 2016

Every year Christmas seems to seep in even earlier than the last year. We've all seen it at some point and certainly I'm not hte first person to comment on it here at TrekBBS.

Last year was a new one for one, the earliest yet -- one or two stores got Christmas supplies in, in August. It's August again, and so far I haven't seen anything, but my shopping has been curtailed because of finances, so I can't say for sure no store I normally would have gone to, has any yet.

So, I wanted to get people feelings on ever encroaching Christmas items in stores in your area, and when you start seeing them (I'm wanting to get a national and world wide idea of this -- curiosity).

For me, I can understand catalogues with Christmas items, so people can buy gifts early, but decorations and candy so far in advance, I just personally feel cheapen not only the holiday, but the general spirit of it (to say nothing about the religious importance). You see Christmas stuff and it's not even been Halloween yet.

When should the items start appearing? That's hard to say. I think the day after Halloween would be nice, since Halloween is over and Christmas is approaching and Thankgiving (if you celebrate it in your house or area) just starts setting the mood.

UK and nothing yet where I am. I suspect things will start appearing shortly after September starts. It usually starts in the Supermarket and Bargain stores.

I do tend to try and get my christmas shopping done early (if only to avoid the crowds) but I'd prefer it if they didn't start heavily featuring Christmas stuff until after Halloween (of perhaps Bonfire night)

Well, it looks like the War on Christmas will be starting early this year....

Actually this thread is the first thing I have read about Christmas this year, so thanks for that.
Same. I thought they'd pleasantly dialed back on the earlier and earlier encroachment of Christmas which had gotten a bit out of hand in the past.

Not thinking about my birthday, which is on Christmas, for a few more months helps me avoid pondering the infinite unknown limbo that is the creeping inevitable embrace of death, so thanks OP! ;)

It's like if someone were to talk about pumpkin spice year-round for no apparent reason. You just don't do that kind of thing.

Yes, it's early. But I'm looking forward to an Austin Christmas. I think I might spring for a 9 foot tree this year.

a local shop has been offering gingerbread for a week or two now. And yesterday another shop had 2 crates labeled "Christmas display" standing beside the cashier waiting to be unpacked. They had Elsa printed on them and some other cartoon characters.
I wonder when the first chocolate santa will turn up

Last year, christmas sales were pretty low here in Germany, and even I myself didn't get in the christmas mood until just a few days before Christmas Eve (and I'm a huge fan of christmas). At the time, we thought it was because of the warm weather, but shops putting christmas items up for sale as early as mid-August might have had something to do with it, as well.
