Back To The Future is turning 40!

Well it’s 2025 and Back to the Future is going to be 40 this December.
I dare say it is maybe the best blockbuster of the 80s. Had two great follow on movies. The time travel is not all overall too complicated to follow. Sure you could nip pick the little details. But it’s a movie not a science documentary.
To me it’s a dam perfect movie. The cinematography, the score, comedic, dramatic and exciting.
Every time I see a delorean on screen or in real life I just smile.
Also thank god we’ve not had a remake or reboot. Great Scott! Can you imagine a modern retelling of ghostbusters 2016 awfulness?
Did you see it on the big screen? I only had the pleasure of video tapes as I was a bit young as I was only three years old at the time of release.

If they were going to remake the film (which would be a terrible idea) the optimal time to set it you have been in 2015 so you could have the hero travel back to 1985

Yeah that would work for the 80's nostalgia like the original had 50's nostalgia. But I wouldn't trust them to fudge it up.
I do remember a few years back and I don't know if this is true or just a bs rumour. Micheal J Fox expressed interest playing Doc Brown if they ever did a remake. But with his health it was unlikely.
Also I think Robert Zemeckis has stated a remake will never happen.

While I agree that it's a damn near perfect film with two great sequels, and I would go as far as arguing that it's the best, most complete film trilogy ever, I am hard pressed to day it was the best 80s blockbuster when you have Terminator right there (and I say that as someone who isn't a big fan of it and prefers Judgement Day).

It's definitely up there. But for trilogies I might have to give it 2nd place. Lord of the Rings for me is impossible to beat.
Definitely, especially the extended editions. Like I said, it's an argument. It all depends on what you're in the mood for.

I think Indiana Jones and Bourne (the initial films for both) are also on the top of the list.

Indeed!

Good trilogies I rank high are
Lord of the Rings
Back to the Future
Star Wars OT
Pirates of the Caribbean 1 to 3
Star Trek II to IV
Indiana Jones 1 to 3
Dark Knight

Also steering it to back to Back to the Future anyone experience the ride at universal studios?
It was one of my favourites. So sad they changed it

Is The Terminator really a blockbuster though? It's a relatively low budget R/18 rated sci-fi/horror film. Don't get me wrong, it's arguably one of the best films of the 80s, and one of the most perfect films ever made, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as things like Back to the Future or Raiders or Ghostbusters (though I would argue T2 was a blockbuster)

I think the beauty of BTTF, The Terminator, Alien, Star Wars (ANH) and Raiders is that they stand by themselves as great movies. That they happen to have at least one sequel that is as good, or maybe even better, just makes them extra special.

I would include Ghostbusters, but I rarely find anyone who thinks the sequel is just as good.(I love it :D)

Agreed. Most blockbusters its all about setting up the next movie or movie universe.
Well Back to the Future had the ending with possibility of a sequel, if that had not of happened its ending is still quite satisfying as a stand alone story.

The weird thing about Star Wars ANH as a standalone is that much is made of Luke getting a lightsaber but then other than remote training he never uses it.

Yeah!

And come to think of it it might have been useful for getting out of the trash compactor!

Saw it on the big screen 5-6 times (not something I did very much as a rule). My kids, especially my son, love it (and the whole trilogy).

Perhaps it was about establishing the technology, so the audience was aware of what Vader and Kenobi were swordfighting with?

The ending worked well as the final act of its own story. It's like a fun tease of the adventure continuing in the minds of the audience, which they basically re-did for the ending of BTTF III.

"Nope, already been there"

Where did you go, Doc? Where did you go?

Yeah, obviously Kenobi does use it in the cantina first but you'd have to explain WTF it was at some point!

Well I believe he went to the future before saying goodbye to Marty to get his train the hover conversion.
I thought his next adventure was going to be inspired by a Jules Verne book, around the world in 80 days, journey to the centre of the earth, from the earth to the moon.
Or maybe to live the rest of his life happy ever after at any point of time, maybe back to 1885?
