atheists: do you still take the name in vain?

you know, do you still say 'jesus H christ' or 'for god's sake!' when you curse?

or do you just go with the more prosaic anglo-saxon stuff like 'shit' etc?

Yeah, I still say "goddamn," "Jesus Christ," "holy shit," "oh my fucking god," and the like.

I've only gotten worse since moving to New Jersey. :shifty:

Oh, for sure. I spout all kinds of religious blasphemy.

"Oh, for god's sake" & "oh my god"
"What the hell?"
"Jesus Christ" & "Christ"
"Freaking hell god"

Swearing is one of life's great pleasures - and art forms, for some. Religious swear words are a large and important part of my repertoire.

(Edit: I also say "Bless you!" or some variation thereof when someone sneezes. Must look into changing that.)

All the time. It's just a name. They're words. If such a god existed that couldn't handle someone taking it's name in vain, then it's not much of a god, or at the very least, a very insecure one.

Well I've only acknowledged myself as an Atheist for a couple of years now and I do find myself second-guessing if it's proper to say "Jesus" and "Jesus Christ" and "Jesus Tap-dancing Christ" but then I realize they're just words. "God dammit" is another staple.

Yes, and - funnily enough - I know a couple of Christians who accidentally blurt it out too.

It's always fun yelling about imaginary people anyway.

Yes, they're just words. And hardly "in vain" since I don't believe in the entity they supposedly represent.

I use them all the time; they're just words. I particular like to string together several swear words, along with blasphemous curses, so I can express myself Yosemite Sam-style.

I still do, though for some reason I've started to make god plural recently.

"By the gods!"
"Gods damn it!"

And the like.

To clarify I do believe Jesus was a real person. I just don't think he was the magician everyone makes him out to be.

I could just as easily swear about someone else in history:

*bangs thumb with hammer*

"OH FOR WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE!"

All the time. It's just part of the language and carries no religious value or negativity for me.
