Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

(Herc nods towards Gabby and the two get up to leave Mother and Child alone for the first time today.)

I've wondered about this part of the final scene in "God Fearing Child". Was Herc just giving Xena quiet time with Eve... or was he advising Gabrielle re: her responsibilities in this new "family".

After all, early in that ep she was already worrying about the baby's safety, and promising to "be" more alert.

Which brings us to...

Episode 103 season 5 # 13 "Eternal Bonds"

Every once in a while, I try to figure out what the title means... (Still waiting on an explanation for "Adventures in the Sin Trades" guys!) and this one is complex.

Is it bonds of friendship, love, parenthood, family?

And how does one define family?

EB opens with a GREAT shot (I fear after all these seasons I have NOT given enough praise to the beauty of the photography on X:WP) of two horses forcing their way through deep sand as a storm threatens to envelope them and their riders. Awesome riding sequence occurs next, complete with tornadoes, lightning, burning trees and a mysterious form pointing the way to (?) safety.

Although the cave provides protection from the storm and the tornado... it isn't completely "safe".

Xena: "Well, Eve, that's one for the grandchildren, huh? Not many babies can say they've been chased by a tornado."
Gabrielle: "Not many babies are being blamed for the death of Zeus. The gods aren't taking that lightly."
Xena: "Gods, what do they know?"
Gabrielle: "Fear, for the first time they're fighting for their lives."
Xena: "Gabrielle we've managed to handle it so far."
Gabrielle: "You're right, tornadoes? Lightning? How could it get worse?"
Voice in the darkness: "Xena, Gabrielle, hi, it's me." (Sees Xena with Chakram raised) "Don't throw anything."
Gabrielle and Xena: "Joxer."

Bottom line, three Temples devoted to different Gods have bound themselves together to take out Xena and Eve. Joxer leads messengers from the temple to Xena and a FIGHT ensues. (SURPRISE!) Xena takes care of them with Gabby's help, while Joxer manages to get himself cut with a poisoned sword. Xena sends an unhappy Gabrielle away with Joxer to find an antidote while she lays a false trail for the temple guards to follow.

A couple things strike me about this ep.

One, is that Xena makes a great mother! Even when she sits down to breast feed, she arranges her weapons within easy reaching distance, even her unconventional ones. Also, thoughout the ep she's busy teaching Eve the ways of a warrior princess!

Loved the line to Eve as the baddies are "sneaking" up behind her... "You know, it never fails. Every time you sit down to eat. Don't worry. I'll keep it warm for you."

The other is that after a season (4) where Ares only showed up in one (1999) episode, this year we have a veritable feast of 10 out of 22 eps with his presence.VaVa Voom!
And finally... even though Xena & Gabrielle are separated most of the ep, and each undergo a type of temptation, its interesting to me how each one stays true to the other.

After season 4's ever evolving relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, in some ways season 5 put the brakes on it. Again, I understand "why" that occured. The mysterious pregnancy and the obvious questions it engendered about who Xena was with, much less when or "why" she didn't tell Gabrielle. Even after one gets beyond those questions, there's the uneven emphasis that the most important thing is no longer the friendship/relationship, but rather the new life being created and the fact that the one who "isn't" pregnant can only "do" so much. We saw that last week, when Gabrielle dreamt that both women were giving birth, and Xena "wished" she could give her half the labor pains.

This week, Xena is plagued by very vivid dreams of her former lover coming back into her life. We should have known they were dreams, when Ares said everthing "perfectly", without once sounding selfish.

Ares: "There is no going back, Eve has seen to that. I have a short span 'o time, and then [Snaps fingers] I'm gone."
Xena: "Well, you'll forgive me if I don't wear mourning."
Ares: "The question is, do you forgive me? I wanna be with you, Xena and I will do whatever it takes to make that happen prove myself to make you trust me." (A bad guy tries to kill Eve, and Xena whips around to toss her Chakram at the trigger rope that springs Eve up into the trees for safety while Ares sends a ball of lightning into the chest of the bad guy)
Xena: "You saved her."
Ares: "No, that spring you rigged saved her. I just pitched relief."
Xena: "But Eve means your death."
Ares: "You still don't get it. I would sooner die in your arms, than live without you in mine." (Very sensuous kiss ensues )
Xena: [Sits up bolt right from her dream, both hands over her mouth as she gasps, then turns to her daughter lying next to her.] "Oh, Eve. Oh, Eve. Eve." [She sighs]

Well, the next day shows Xena that these dreams are able to infect her waking hours, and still she doesn't suspect anything sinister behind them.

Xena: (She's walking along, cutting a trail with her sword, chatting with Eve lying in her left arm)"I'm tellin' ya, Eve, you can't trust any of 'em not dreams not visions not even premonitions. No, none of them mean what you think."
[Ares: "I would rather die in your arms... "]
Xena: [Shudders] "They're either all symbolic or they play on words that you only half remember hearing, but sometimes they're quite literal, but the best thing to do with a dream is just ignore it." (Flashbacks continue to an even more sensual "memory")
Xena: (Daytime Xena is having trouble "ignoring" these dreams) "Ah-h! I think it was Autolycus that said, `Sometimes a dream-- it's just a dream.' It's just a dream." (Flashback getting hotter as we speak)
Xena: "Hm-m-m-m-m-m-m! You see, to be looking for hidden meanings in things, or secret messages that your gut is trying to send you, pr... it's just ludicrous." (Getting close to R rating for a "PG13 show)
Xena: "Ah-h-h-h-h-h! [Sighs] That's crazy. Crazy. Am I right?" (Looks down to oblvious baby in her arms) "What would you know, huh? Well, come on. Another mile and we can double back. Yah!"

Poor Xena. After laying the false trail for the baddies to follow she turns back and manages to get to the Mandrake tree (the source of Joxer's antidote) before Joxer and Gabrielle.

Now those two left YESTERDAY on horseback, Xena walked South for a couple miles then doubled back and she STILL beat them to the tree!

Gams of steel, I tell ya!

Remember that part I mentioned, about Xena sending an "un"happy Gabrielle away with Joxer "in case" he was poisoned? Well, it didn't take long for Gabrielle to realize Xena was right as she sees the "red line of poison" ascend his arm. They stop for her to add a new poultice to the wound.

Gabrielle: "I'm sorry about what I said. I did not mean that."
Joxer: "Mm-m, I think you did."
Gabrielle: "OK, maybe I did. It's just hard knowing that the people I love are in danger and I'm not there."
Joxer: "Talkin' about Xena, right? I'm sure she can handle herself." [Sighs]
Gabrielle: "It doesn't mean I don't wanna be there so I can jump in and help out or something."
Joxer: "I know the feelin'. Hm-m-m."
Gabrielle: "I can be a real bitch sometimes, huh?"
Joxer: "Mm-m-m-m-m-m. Hm-m-m-m-m-m. Mm-m-m-m-m-m-m." (looks away)
Gabrielle: "Can't I?"
Joxer: "Mm-mm-mmmm-mmm." (Nods)

Its the next day, and Joxer is worse. He's becoming delirious which means he's acting like season 1 Gabrielle on henbane laced nutbread.

Joxer: "You're so beautiful, Gabrielle. Did I ever tell you that."
Gabrielle: "You're very ill, Joxer."
Joxer: "Hey I kind of miss your long hair, you know? You used to wear it up like a princess, or braided like a warrior? And sometimes you'd have it down, and you'd look like an angel."
Gabrielle: "Joxer I'm not any of those things. I'm just me, all right? Joxer, stay awake!"

Unfortunately for Joxer, he falls off the horse from high fever and dehydration. Gabby runs off to refill their water skins while he hides from wandering temple guards. When she finally finds him hiding in a hollow log, they start to argue once again.

Joxer: "OK, look, I got an idea."
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "Yeah."
Joxer: "You go get the resin and come back, and I'll wait here."
Gabrielle: "I'm not leaving you."
Joxer: "Now, who's not thinking? Xena's probably already at the tree, waiting for us."
Gabrielle: "Well, then, she's on her way to find us."
Joxer: "Look, we're so far off the trail, she's not gonna know where to look. Gabrielle why don't you be smart and think about the people you love!"
Gabrielle:
"I am."

Xena, by this time, has had yet another encounter with Ares at the Mandrake tree in the waking world. How can you tell? He's sounding selfish again.

Xena: (She's climbed into the top of the Mandrake tree and can see the three temple armies converging on her location.) "Ares."
Ares: "You rang?"
Xena: "I knew this had your stink all over it."
Ares: "Well, I had to do something to get your attention. You're always walking away."
Xena: "With good reason. I knew all your talk was lies."
Ares: "You're wrong. I'm more than willing to fight beside you, be a father to Eve, and to a child of our own."
Xena: "That's your game. Now that you feel you're checking out, you want a child to carry on your line."
Ares: "I know it's not real immortality, but it's better than nothing. Besides, mortals do it all the time. Why not me?"
Xena: "Because you're a conniving bastard! That's why not you."
Ares:
"Only because you never believe me when I'm trying to be sincere."
Xena: "Sincere?"
Ares: "I'm trying, OK? Every god on Mount Olympus is targeting you. Even now, three temple armies are closing in. Now, all I'm asking is your word we will be together and have a child and I'll make all this go away. I swear."
Xena: "You're asking me to give up the future. Well, I won't do that, even if it means sacrificing my life."
Ares: "Even if it means Joxer's life or Gabrielle's or Eve's?"

Xena needs to find her two friends, and as she does she continues to school Eve in the ways of a budding warrior.

Xena: (To Eve) "See, what we gotta do is keep our eyes peeled for a sign. Gabrielle's smart. She'll try to get our attention if she can. Trouble is, the guards would smell a signal fire." (Eve starts to cry) "Hey. Hey. Guards have ears, too, you know? Otherwise, Gabrielle would be raising a ruckus, so unless you see something that I don't..." (She turns to look up in the direction Eve is looking, and sees a scroll kite flying high) "Well, why didn't you say something? Told you Gabrielle was smart."

Since she's been away from Xena, Gabrielle has been reminded how much Joxer means to her life with each step he takes closer to death. Joxer wakes from another delirious dream and calls for her.

Joxer: Sits up and cries out) "Gabrielle!"
Gabrielle: "Hey-- it's OK. It's OK." (She gets behind him to support him as he lies back against her as she cradles him)
Joxer: "Was I dreaming?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah."
Joxer: "I dreamt we were in trouble, you know?"
Gabrielle: "Us? No way."
Joxer: "Us. How come there was never an `us,' Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "Why, why do people love the people that they do? I don't, I don't know."
Joxer: "I know why. Because you made me feel special."
Gabrielle: "You are special."
Joxer: "Not special enough."
Gabrielle: "You're special enough to see me through the worst times of my life enough that I've come to rely on you as a very good friend."
Joxer: "Why didn't you love me, Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "I do love you. It's just not the way that you want it, I guess. I wish I did." (She hears someone approaching from the trees) "Joxer, lie still, OK?" (She gets up from behind Joxer and pulls her sais, ready to fight whoever is running towards them) Xena! Thank the gods. Did you get to the tree?"

Before she can answer, the three armies attack. Xena and Gabrielle go to it serious time... until Ares freeze frames everyone except Xena, and gives her one last chance to accept his offer.

Ares: "Had enough? One word from you and all this is over. You know how it could be, Xena. Give me a child. I swear, I would never harm it. Dreams can come true, Xena. Give me a child."
Xena: "You're not a dream. You're my worst nightmare."

Did I mention last "week" how Xena called him on trying to seduce Gabrielle, "her best friend"?

Gabrielle & Ares: Wake up call

I know I forgot to mention she brought THAT up again "yesterday"...

Ares: "Ooh. How did we ever let things get this way between us?"
Xena: "Well, could it have been when you used the Furies to drive me insane? Or, when you turned yourself into my father, just to torment me? Or, was it coming onto my best friend?

So, I'm guessing you know what HER answer was... right?

:rommie:

Oh, and three armies against Xena and Gabrielle, can I assume you know WHO came out victorious?

:guffaw:

Naturally, Xena did get the resin from the Mandrake tree before she came looking for Joxer and Gabrielle, and she was able to heal him in "no" time.

As the trio walked off into the sunset... (actually "mid day sun" but you get the idea)... Gabby has one last talk with Joxer, before leaving his side to walk with Xena.

Gabrielle: "Joxer, when you were ill, I said, um... "
Joxer: "I know what you said. You said that you love me, but only as a friend, right?"
Gabrielle: "I do mean that I... I... "
Joxer: "I know you do. I know you do. But, Gabrielle, I will always love you more than that. And that's just something I'll have to live with. You know? But that's all right."

She WAS impressive, wasn't she! :bolian:

Re: Iolaus, I thought he died in HTLJ's ???? (Does anyone really die on those shows? ;) )

Although I like Kevin Smith better with short hair, the shallow person in me likes Sorbo with the long hair much more. (The REAL reason I never "took" to Andromeda  )

Just watching an old ep of Miami Vice last night and guess who was the playing the DA?:techman: Meg always seems to be cast as a successful professional lady be it a starship captain, lawyer, tv exec, madam of a high-class bordello or whatever, she just has that quality to her.

Eternal Bonds was an ok ep, like the Gabby/Joxer stuff, about time they addressed the reality of their relationship. The Xena/Eve bonding is also nice and of course Ares, Ares, Ares, as you point out we're entering an extremely Olympian god heavy arc in the show. Great things to come!

True... (re: "Great things to come" )if you don't count "Married with Fishsticks"! :klingon:

You know, I used to  at the liberties TPTB in the Xenaverse take with history before I just gave it up and "went with it".

I mean really, Gabby is friends with Homer in Bard school (He lived 8-9th cent BC). She and Xena visit Troy and save Helen (Which happened in the 12th cent BC...way before Homer's birth). They plan to go to a Sappho recital (7th cent BC). They meet up with Caesar and Cleopatra who both lived in the last cent BC, Xena has a (?) fling with Lao Ma, the wife of Lao Tzu who lived 6th cent BC, and she is friends with both Goliath AND young David, the future King of Israel but he lived in the 9th cent BC. Oh, and she was an ally who betrayed and later repented and eventually aided Boadicea, but SHE lived in the 1st cent AD.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

ANYWAY... I have to admit my recent Xena:WP seminars have aided me in an unexpected way.

Today I participated in a round robin contest with colleagues from work for the benefit of a national charity. We didn't win (drats!) but DID come in second out of 32 teams.

What does this have to do with Xena? :)

I got three questions RIGHT because of her!

Name the Titan killed by his son, Zeus. (Season 5 = Cronos)

Name the King of the Norse Gods. (Season 6 = Odin)

And name the lowest level of Hades. (Season 1-5 = Tarturas)

USUALLY I'm called upon to answer the scifi questions, but not a single one this year. (Drats!)

Anyway, thanks for all the help, X:WP PTB's. :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

Episode 104 Season 5 #14 "Amphipolis Under Seige"

Portugese trailer:

A fight breaks out at the toll station on the road to Amphipolis, Xena's home town. Several Silver clad warrior babes are attacking the hapless guards, and they are losing until the air is split by a CERTAIN war cry, and a Warrior we all know and love vaults into the middle of the fray.

The first thing I want to mention about this TEASER is that for those of you ...

(and you know who you are... ;) )

...who have missed them these last NINE months... (season 4 finale till "now"), Xena's legs not to mention her old Warrior costume are BACK! :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

(Just don't get your panties in a twist when they disappear briefly "next" week. )

The second thing I want to mention is that Auntie Gabby needs to go back to warrior babysitting school. She was SUPPOSED to be hiding??? behind a tree with Eve as the action is taking place just yards away. How do I know they are that close? Because this is what she said when she stepped OUT from behind the tree!

Gabrielle: (To a quietly crying Eve) "Sh-h-h-h. You'll give us away. Mommy's working."

The third thing is... you REALLY need to buy the dvds and WATCH this ep. Xena's face is PRECIOUS when she's fighting the lead silver armored female warrior... its like she's relishing the fight against a comparably skilled warrior. Suddenly Xena flays the chick's left cheek open and the warrior stops in SHOCK. Xena is "ready to keep going"... but suddenly the woman whistles her soldiers to her side and they all run away. Xena is completely FLUMMOXED!

As she tends to the wounded guards, she realizes what's "on" this road and suspects a certain stalker is behind this attack.

Xena: "Ares."
Ares:
"Hey, Xena, have a change 'o heart? Well, my offer still stands. I'm willing to protect you and your child at no small amount of personal risk, I might add."
Xena: "And what if I decline? You ransack my hometown? Hold my mother hostage until I agree."

Not exactly. You see, Xena got it wrong this time. Its that OTHER God of War... or make that Goddess of War, Wisdom AND Weaving who's behind this nefarious plan.

Xena: "Athena."

TEASER ENDS/Act 1 OPENS: In this vid, the opening credits are reworked as Amphipolis specific http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkHPRakejpc

Athena: (Looks at the cut on her beautiful soldier's left face) "Don't tell me one of those toll collectors laid a weapon on you."
Elenis: "Xena was there."
Athena: (Heals the wound with her touch) "You have my favor, Elenis always. But take care, it doesn't make you any less mortal."
Elenis: "I saw the child. I could have killed her for you."
Athena: "You're a fine warrior, Elenis. But the most dangerous animal on Earth is a mother protecting her young. In the name of Zeus I will kill the child myself."

(Athena... DON'T forget the grandmother either!)

Xena managed to avoid her Mom throughout MOST of her pregnancy, but THANKFULLY she gives us one last look at our happy Cyrene this week. Loved watching her ride into town and Gabrielle "unpack" Eve from her position on Xena's back after she dismounts. Xena is intent on getting her Mom to safety, but all Cyrene wants to do is love the bundle of JOY Gabrielle has just laid in her arms.

Unlike 5 years ago, THIS time when Xena faces a tavern full of Villagers to warn them of the army on their doorstep, the people of Amphipolis LISTEN. The fact that they listen has worried Athen ENOUGH that she makes a personal appearance in the tavern to sway them AWAY from Xena and BACK to her side.

She just forgot about the GRANDMOTHER!

Athena: "Xena."
Xena: "Athena I would say it's an honor, but considering you're here to kill my baby, I'll skip the formalities."
Athena: "I am not unsympathetic, Xena, but consider the
consequences of your actions. You would deprive these people of their gods? Their faith? For the life of one child?"
Cyrene: (Standing in the background, holding Eve to her heart) "Hasn't this village given up enough of its children. I've already lost a son and a grandson I never even met. Well, I won't give up this child, not even for the gods themselves."
Athena: (To the crowd in the tavern) "And all of you, are you that eager to die for this child?"
Cyrene: [Sings Glede Ma Glede as Athena keeps talking]

Athena: "I don't want any of you to suffer. Give me this child and you will receive my blessing."
Villagers: [Join Cyrene in singing Glede Ma Glede]
Athena: "The armies of Athena lay siege to this town. You think you can fight them with a song?! I've protected you for years, watched over you, and this is how you repay me?! (Singing continues as Xena and Gabrielle look about in amazement) So, be it. You have chosen your fate."

The next thing we know, GABRIELLE that Captain of the Amphipolis guard is leading a charge against Athena's army.

Remember the "old days", when we were so afraid of gabby losing her blood innocence? Well, THOSE days have come and gone. Gabrielle learned last year she would kill to save Xena, and this year to save Eve.

(I have to say... Renee looks AWESOME in these sequences. Wow!)

The other thing I feel I should mention/ask... does Xena have more than ONE stalker on Mount Olympus????

Elenis: "They're trying to break out here."
Athena: "Frontal assault onto one of our best units? It doesn't sound like a move Xena would make."
Elenis: "Could be a diversion."
Athena: "I considered that, but Gabrielle is leading the attack. Xena would never risk her second-in-command on a suicidal feint."
Elenis: "If Xena commands half the loyalty you do, my goddess, Gabrielle would surely lay down her life to insure Xena's escape."
Athena: "I don't doubt Gabrielle's willingness to die, only Xena's willingness to lose her. But what if Xena has no intention of losing her? Remember, Elenis, a great commander always looks beyond what their opponent is doing to see if there's a deeper strategy."

What comes next leads to one of the greatest clips in XENA:WP history... :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

Xena is leading a platoon of villagers through the underground tunnels, planning to come up behind Athena's forces and crush them between her and Gabrielle's forces. Unfortunately, a certain goddess divined her plan and sent HER second in command to stop her. Elenis did just that, with a couple of barrels of "greek fire" that she obviously planned to SET afire.

XENA: "You don't want to do that"

Torch is dropped as Xena turns to run.

KABOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See Xena sprinting down the tunnel, sword in hand, fireball chasing her from behind.

GAWD that was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

Xena: "Some people just don't listen."

The funny thing was happening above ground, as Gabrielle and her troops were "waiting" for their reinforcements, and waiting, and waiting and Gabby goes from reassuring her troops to herself calling out... "XENAAAAAA!!!!!!!!" until the EXPLOSION happens right in front of her, laying waste to Athena's troops standing before her.

Gabrielle: (To herself) "Not what I expected." (To her troops) "Back to the trenches! Back to the trenches!"

The two friends walk the perimeter, taking stock. Gabby doesn't like what she has to report, they are down to half strength. Xena notes even at full strength, they couldn't break Athena's siege. That's when Gabby tries to talk her friend into doing something SHE HERSELF refused to do over a year ago in Actus. "Save Eve and herself", by putting on captured armor and slipping out of Amphipolis in the dead of night. Gabby figures Athena will leave if Xena does.

Xena's no fool. She KNOWS that Athena KNOWS the Warrior Princess would never abandon her hometown.

Xena walks alone into her Mom's tavern, which now serves as the hospice. She watches sadly as Mom pulls a cover over yet another villager, then turns and walks away. Before Xena can leave, she discovers Athena at a bedside, and they have yet another tete e tete. The one surprising thing about that conversation was XENA actually RESPECTED Athena before "today".

After telling Xena she's poisoned the water supply, Athena winks away... and EVE starts to cry in the next room. CUE one Warrior Princess Mom who goes running into the next room with sword halfway out of her scabbard!

Xena: "Eve?" (Sees her Mom picking up her daughter)
Cyrene: "Don't panic, she just needs changing."
Xena: "Hey, Eve, you're all right. I worry about her though, Mom."
Cyrene: "Listen, no matter what happens, thank you for letting me see my granddaughter. She is so perfect."
Xena: "No, Mom, it's me who should be thanking you. Standing up to Athena like that was very impressive."
Cyrene: "Please, facing down a god I can handle. Well, I raised you, remember? Terrible twos, terrible threes, terrible fourteens."
Xena: "Sorry I made it so tough for you."
Cyrene: "Oh, now look, just listen for once, you know, in the end it's worth all the heartache in the world, just to see your child grow up strong, proud. I'd like you to know what that's like, Xena."
Xena: "I will, Mom. I will."

Just two points. I love Cyrene, and after seeing this whole series, this scene makes me want to cry.

So, lets recap. Amphipolis defenses are down to half strength, their water is poisoned, Xena refuses to escape in the night and the goddess of WAR WISDOM AND WEAVING is about to start catapaulting dead cows into the village.

What's a Warrior PRINCESS to do? (THIS is the OTHER reason you really need to buy the DVD's. :bolian: :bolian: :bolian: )

Ares: "So-- "
Xena: "Ares-- "
Ares: "Hmm?"
Xena: "I believe we discussed a deal."
Ares: "Deal, deal, deal, deal, deal. I don't know. Did we?"
Xena: "Cut the crap. I'm ready to bargain. You fight beside me and we can defeat Athena."
Ares: "Maybe we can. Of course, if I side with you against my sister then I become a pariah on Olympus. So by helping you my own fate is sealed. Oh, I'm still interested. I just wanna know, what's in it for me?"
Xena:
"What's in if for you? Me."

ACT ENDS: (I REALLY like not having to wait throught he commercial breaks!)

Xena: "You help me defeat Athena-- and I'm yours."
Ares: "You're mine."
Xena: (She's crawling up into his face as she speaks) "For years, you've been wanting me to be your Warrior Queen. Well I'm offering you my sword and the body that wields it."
Ares: "That's um, that's very tempting. But what about
Olympus?"
Xena: "Olympus is doomed. Zeus is dead. And whatever happens here, their reign is over. Look, you want immortality? A child is immortality, a legacy, a lineage. You help me save my daughter and you will be her father. Through her, we can live forever."
Ares: "Xena, uh... "
Xena: "I'm offering you everything you ever wanted. Take it." (Sensuous kiss ensues, to rival the dream ones from "last week's ep)
Ares: (He breaks off the kiss and spins away from Xena!) "No. No, you don't."
Xena:
(And for the second time today, Xena is FLUMMOXED by her "opponent's reaction to stop their "engagement") "What?"

For his part, Ares is smarter than he looks, and quicker on the uptake than Xena was last week. He smells a double cross, and leaves his temple and the Warrior Princess in a godly huff.

Meanwhile, back on the front lines, the troops are starting to grumble, and Gabrielle has to call them on their doubts and remind them they fight for more than Xena's babe, they fight for their rights to be treated as humans and not game pieces for the gods. It was a stirring speech, but what came next was more interesting as she ran off by herself and did something we've only seen Xena do. She "called a god" to her side.

Gabrielle: "....Ares! Ares, I need to talk to you."
Ares: "Well, aren't I Mr. Popular?"
Gabrielle: "I'm not here to play games. I know that Xena made an offer to you."
Ares: "You're telling the story."
Gabrielle: "If you lay a hand on her I sw... "
Ares: (He is so wonderfully TESTY here!) "What? You'll do what?"
Gabrielle: "If you accept you will destroy Xena. You will turn her into exactly what she used to be, a vicious killer!"
Ares: "Yeah, well I kinda liked that Xena."
Gabrielle: "Did you? Then why are you so obsessed with who she is now?" (You know, she HAS a point!) "Tell me you don't feel anything for the real Xena the good Xena. Ares, if you make her do this, she will never love you."
Ares: "Do you think she'd really give herself to me to save
Eve?"
Gabrielle: "Has she ever said anything she doesn't mean?"
Ares: "Thank you."
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "Don't do it."
Ares: "Hm-m-m-m-m." (and he winks away)

Ares tries to strike a bargain with Athena, but she just laughs in his face. He goes back to his Temple to stew and discovers SOMEONE never left. SOMEONE is also missing her gauntlets, her armor, basically all of her clothes as we see her stand up from his settee (Gods of War HAVE settees???) wrapped in only a fur which has now slipped significantly down her body...

Have I mentioned yet that you should probably buy the DVDs? :guffaw: Cuz folks, the next transcript does NOT do this part JUSTICE!

Xena: "Hello, Ares. Thought I might find you here."
Ares: "Oh, yeah."
Xena:
"So, are we going to seal this deal? Or what?"
Ares: "Sounds like a plan."
Xena: "One thing. Can I trust you to keep your end of the
bargain?"
Ares: "Yeah, sure."
Xena: "Because I wouldn't want there to be any confusion."
Ares: "No, no confusion. Uh I side with you against gods, save Eve. Gotcha."
Xena:
"Excellent." She grabs him by the vest and spins him around until he falls on top of said settee then vaults herself on top of him."
Ares: "Whoa!"

(Time out for an interview from Whoosh.org:

06-11-00. In the June 2000 issue of Chakram, the newsletter of the Official Xena Fan Club, Robert Tapert was interviewed:
Interviewer: There have been some pretty hot scenes between Xena and Ares lately.
Robert Tapert: We have an episode coming up that's the most sexually predatory story we've ever told. And if I have any concern, it's over that. Interviewer: Predatory?
Robert Tapert: Xena uses sex as a weapon. "Amphipolis" was the first time we've ever done that. We do it again in "Antony and Cleopatra". It didn't bother me with Ares in "Amphipolis" because it was part of Xena's ruse. Interviewer: They've played so many games with each other?
Robert Tapert: Yeah, but in that episode it was the only weapon left to her. The siege mentality was the justification for her going to Ares and spinning her web that way. Lucy as an actress is hot and Kevin's a good - looking guy. There's a certain chemistry between them that we wanted to "utilize".

So THAT's what they call it? Va Va Va Voom! )

Fan made trailer, Language?: http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&q=impugned&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

So where were we... oh yes... Xena is becoming Ares dream come true (and how many fan boys / and given the fan base, fan girls dreams?) when she stops "twice" inexplicably hearing something he and we DON'T hear.

Finally...

Xena: (Breaks the kiss yet again) "Uh, no, no-- no, I heard fighting."
Ares:
"Perfect. Now-- where were we?" (Resumes kissing until a HUGE EXPLOSION blows a gaping hole through the wall of his temple... and NO I don't mean that as a double entendre! Immediately a worried grandmother holding her ganddaughter walks by and peers worriedly into the room from the street outside)
Cyrene: "Are you all right?"
Xena: (Aghast!) "Mom?"

ACT OPENS:

Cyrene: (Shocked as she turns Eve's face away from the naked woman in a fur cloak ontop of the god of War) "Xena!"
Xena:
(Trying to sit up and cover up at the same time) "This is not what it looks like!"
Ares:
"Yeah, it is."
Cyrene:
"I suppose it could be worse. I mean, after all, he is a god. Although, I would have preferred Apollo or or maybe Hermes."
Ares:
(Machismo DEFINTEDLY impugned!) "Excuse me, Hermes? With the wings on the feet? Oh, please."

Have I told you yet that I LOVE Cyrene? :bolian:

Cyrene tells Xena that GABRIELLE has launched yet another attack in an attempt to break out of Athena's stranglehold. Ares sees it as a perfect opportunity.

Ares: "Leave her (Gabrielle) now, while Athena's distracted, and I'll take you and your daughter someplace else."

I don't think you'll be surprised to find out Xena doesn't agree. She dresses quickly as Ares reassures Xena he "would" have kept their bargain. Before she leaves him, she admits...

Xena: "I know you would have. I've got to do this my way."
Ares:
"What a surprise."

What will surprise you, however, is to discover WHY Athena stopped her Champion, Elenis, from putting an arrow through Gabrielle's heart.

She saw Xena walking into the midst of the final battle of Amphipolis, carrying her baby.

Athena did more than save Gabrielle. She stopped her entire army.

Gabrielle was shocked, and turned to see Xena crossing the battle field. She quickly ran to her side, carrying a mallet the size of a bard.

Gabrielle: "Xena, what are you doing?"
Xena: (Face intent on her goal, refusing to look at Gabrielle as she carries the swaddled baby towards the enemy's lines) "Get outta my way, Gabrielle. I'm going to save these people and you."

(Athena meets her halfway, winking into view before the determined Princess.)
Athena: "A wise decision, Xena."
Xena: "Pull back your army."
Athena: "Of course. You heard her."
Elenis: (To the army around them) "Pull back!"
Xena: [Whispers to her sleeping babe as she lays her on the ground between them] "OK."
Athena: (Pulls her sword) "It's for the best, Xena."
Xena: "Don't make it worse with your platitudes. Do it! While she's asleep. Do it."
Athena:
"You might want to look away."
Xena: "If my daughter's to be sacrificed to save these people, the least I can do honor her is to remember every detail."

Who could listen to the courage in that voice, see the bravery flowing across that face, and NOT be stirred?

Ares: "Not so fast, Sis."
Athena: "Ares, get out of my way!"
Ares: "You know what they say? Blood is thicker than water, but blood runs hardest when love is involved."
Athena: "You're really whipped, aren't you?"
Ares: "Oh, no, that ain't nice."
Xena: "Gabrielle, now-w-w-w-w-w!"
Gabrielle: "Ata-a-a-a-a-ack!"

Great fight ensues, as Ares takes on Athena, Xena takes on Elenis, and Gabrielle et al. take on Athena's army.

The banter between Xena and Elenis...

Xena: "Let's see you do without your goddess' back."(the two fight and show each other "just" how skillfull they really are, so much so that Xena admits) "Not bad"

...was almost as good as between Ares and Athena...

Athena: (Sword at Ares throat) "What's the matter, Bro? Worried about your girlfriend?" (Elenis has a sword at Xena's throat)
Ares: (He throws his sister back and stands up as Xena does the same) "Me? No. Worried about yours?"

Not my taste in music, but shows the fight!

Xena's sword plunges into Elenis torso, and she falls away from Xena to the ground. Athena's troops see their immediate commander is down, and they scatter. Athena comes to cradle her champion as she dies, then she too leaves the battlefield with Elenis body in tow.

Gabrielle: (Runs to Xena) "... Xena...are you OK?"
Xena: (reaches down to pickup the swaddled child lying on the ground) "Yeah, I'm fine."
Gabrielle: "Did you and-- Ares-- ?"
Xena:
"No!"
Gabrielle:
(Not trusting the first answer) "-- do-- "
Ares: (Walks over to the WP) "Not... yet. Shall we conclude our transaction, Xena?"
Xena: "Y'know, it's really kind of you, Ares, but I don't think I'm gonna have to take you up on your offer after all."
Ares: (Shocked!) "I saved your child."
Xena: (Tosses the wrapped bundle at Ares, who unwraps a wooden toy) "You saved my dollie."
Ares: "Wh... why do you continue to deny us? We had a deal. When we were fightin' side by side, it was like we were one. Back there in the temple..." (You guys have GOT to see the glances going on between Xena and Gabrielle during this part of the scene!) "...can you tell me you didn't feel anything?"
Xena:
(Game face FULLY on!) "I felt nothing."
Ares:
"This isn't finished. As long as your child lives, they'll keep coming and then you're gonna have to come to me for help." (He winks away)
Xena: (To herself) "I felt something." (You should see Gabby's head whip back at THAT comment!)

(Cyrene runs up, holding her grandbaby which Xena gratefully retrieves.)

Cyrene: "Xena, you all right?"
Xena: "Hey, Eve." (She balances Eve on her right shoulder before turning to Gabrielle) " Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. You guys cut it pretty fine with that attack."
Gabrielle: "Huh!"
Xena:
(I hope you pull out the VHS/dvds JUST to watch Xena's face as she torments ;) Gabrielle) "Nearly ran out of foreplay...just about had to go through with it."
Gabrielle: "Xena, when someone invents an accurate time-keeping device, then I can synchronize the plan better."
Xena: (Torment ramps up into full gear  ) "Yeah, and that bomb was a little much, you know? It wasn't like I was wearing anything, I mean, armor."
Cyrene:
(We discover she wasn't just "playing" clueless") "I don't understand. Gabrielle you blew up Ares' temple."
Gabrielle: "We had to start the battle somehow. Otherwise" (Turns to Xena and tries to torment back even just a little) "..you would have had to have gone through with the deal right?"
Cyrene:
"So, you two planned the whole thing?"
Xena:
"Oh-h-h-h."
Cyrene: "Oh, what am I gonna do with you two?"
Xena: (To Eve and Gabby) "Come on."
Gabrielle: "Xena."
Xena: (We watch them walk away together) "Hm-m?"
Gabrielle:
"Did you say that you felt something?"
Xena: "No!"
Gabrielle:
"No, I think I heard you. You... you said you felt something."
Xena: "Gabrielle, I said no such thing."
Gabrielle: "Oh, really?"
Xena: "Maybe a little something."
Gabrielle: "What?"

I LOVE 'Married with Fishsticks' but we'll talk about that when we get there. As for Xena history it really doesn't have a chance, I prefer things the Xena way, it's much more freeing;)

So, the 'Siege of Amphipilous'. The central concept it pretty terrible, the idea that a small greek village could fight off the gods is ludicrous. However I love the scene where Cyrene walks in on Ares and Xena, has me on the floor laughing.

GREAT performance from Paris Jefferson as Athena (brilliant casting, you totally buy her as Meg Foster's daughter) and her relationship with Elenis is terrific, even calling her her girlfriend (the beautiful Buffy/B5 alumni Mussetta Vander). Athena doesn't strike you as a villain, she genuinely seems to love Elenis even as a mortal she's just doing what she needs to do to prevent the Twilight (even Xena says it's an honour to meet her).

Musetta Vander is utterly gorgeous, and she's been in a LOT more genre stuff than Buffy & B5 - Stargate, Highlander, Voyager, Mortal Combat...

Musetta IS an eye catcher, that's for sure. Loved her silver armor vs Athena's golden armor. Made me think of Caesar & Brutus' fashion choices.

I feel I stinted the youtube choices last night for this ep... this one has a "lot" of those scenes that "words just don't do justice to" between Xena & Ares. (Note, does include stuff from elsewhere... including the previously referred to "Eternal Bonds" among others.)

What can I say? Va Va Va Voom!!!!

Speaking of the joy with which Xena was tormenting Gabrielle at the end of this ep...

Xena: "Maybe a little something."
Gabrielle: "What!"

I suspect that ep caused a flood of slash fanfics after its airing, with Cyrene playing babysitter as Xena reviews her seduction of Ares in detail with her "soulmate".

It would explain Gabrielle's comments to her "Amazon tribe" in "Kindrid Spirits" when they wake her up. (But I'm getting ahead of myself. There's some fish I have to deal with before I "go there". ;) )

Oh, here's another one, this with Xena, Ares, and Gabrielle.

From whoosh.org:

09-02-00. In the June 2000 issue of Chakram (#11), the newsletter of the Official Xena Fan Club, executive producer Robert Tapert said "You know what, I will freely cop to [Fishsticks] because we had to do a totally Lucy-free episode or only use her half a day, and I wanted to try, as the basis for another show, the concept of a Simpson's in an underwater Jetson's-like environment, South Florida kitsch, mermaids and all that stuff in a live action format. And it didn't work."

Episode 105 Season 5 #15. "Married with Fishsticks"

Sigh.

(C'mon JRulz! You can do it! Keep your chin up, shoulders back... and march!)

The first time I watched this, it was during my first go-through Xena marathon last Sept? Oct? and luckily (?) I woke up in the middle of the ep. I was very confused and backed the dvd up to try and understand what was going on. Didn't help, so I just turned it off and went to sleep. :techman:

The second time through, I watched the DVD interviews first, and understood a little more "what" they were going for, so I sat through the ep IN ITS ENTIRETY... and haven't since.

Oh, it WASN'T as bad as "Vanishing Act"... and I did watch bits and pieces again last night, but my biggest problem with it (well I have more than1) my biggest problem is the concept, which I will now illustrate.

Gabrielle: (Gabby is alone with Eve, who is crying on her lap) "Come on, Eve. Come on, it's all right. Who's your favorite auntie?! Gaby! Xena'll be back any minute. I promise. She's just grabbing a quick bath. Come on. Hush, hush, hush, hush, now. Hush. I'll give you a dinar. I'll give you five dinars! Oh, please."
(Xena comes running up, buttoning her maternity costume as we speak... YES she's back to the full leggings/loose smock look of the last 6 months)

Xena: (Xena takes the crying child from Gabby)"All right, sweetheart. Momma's here"
Gabrielle: "Xena, I can't figure out what's wrong with her."
Xena: (She has MANY skills, she can calm a baby and calm an Auntie with equal ease) "All babies cry, Gabrielle. It's just a fact of life, huh?" (Eve has stopped crying, much to Gabrielle's chagrin and Xena's smile) "I'm her mother."
Gabrielle: (Softly) "You're a natural."
Xena: [Chuckles]
Gabrielle: "I thought I was, but I lost my touch."
Xena: "Nah, you're great with kids."
Gabrielle: "Xena, I don't have the patience to even raise my own."
Xena: "You rise to every occasion, Gabrielle. I don't think
motherhood's gonna be any different. Don't lose any sleep over it."
Gabrielle: "Speaking of... " (Nods at the baby now sleeping in Xena's arms)
Xena: "Hm-m-m-m-m-m."

EXCUSE ME?

Since when did we rewrite Gabby's history?????

Gabrielle, the woman who has PUT UP WITH XENA for 5 years, is IMPATIENT? In fact, is so IMPATIENT she doesn't have the ability to raise her own children?

EXCUSE ME???

Oh, and when did Xena become so clueless to send JOXER for baby food? Isn't this the guy who tried to feed the Baby king pickles?

I did like Eve's opinion of the man who woke her so rudely from her nap, and Xena's response...

Eve: (Crying as Gabrielle drags Joxer away to find "real" baby food.)
Xena: "I know. He'll grow on ya."
Eve: (Passes gas.)

And I liked the goddess fight between Aphrodite and Discord, and that Gabrielle figured out what was going on with the two (invisible) goddesses.

What I didn't like was the homage to "Overboard" since I didn't like the plot of that movie either. I just find it the height of (whats the MALE version of SKANKITUDE ?) that someone would take advantage of another person the way "Hagar" took advantage of Gabrielle.

I also thought it stunk to high heaven that he included his children in the act of lying.

"Maybe" I could have overlooked all of this in the interests of "comedy", but the KIDS were too weird to accept. Why would a human mating with a mermaid... or a merman (?) mating with a mermaid give rise to 3 different species of offspring?

What did I like?

That the inner Gabrielle DID assert herself, first with the children and then with Hagar, not to mention with 1 escaped octopus and 2 false friends.

I might have even learned to respect Hagar, if he had only FINISHED his confession to Gabrielle BEFORE the wedding ceremony, but he didn't. He copped out until Gabrielle herself called him on it.

What else did I like?

That Gabrielle saved herself, first by recognizing the chakram and recalling the woman who wielded it, and then by remembering HERSELF. :bolian:

Crustacea: "I can't do this. I can't."
Hagar: "What?"
Crustacea: "I am not Crustacea, I'm Gabrielle."

Loved the final fight with the "2 best friends", and how she used the ladies' hair pieces as replacements for her sais. Liked the final goodbye kiss between Gabrielle and Hagar, and the wakeup scene on the Dock with Gabrielle and Joxer; both the "second kiss" Gabrielle reached for AND the right cross she gave him!

(Yes, I noticed the ring still on her finger... but I think I noticed it AFTER Tapert mentioned it in the DVD interviews)

What I thought was also funny, was after Xena's tormenting of Gabrielle at the end of "Amphipolis under Siege" re: Ares... Xena gets a taste of her own medicine as she arrives on the scene of Joxer's resuscitation of Gabrielle.

Xena: "You wanna tell me something', Gabrielle?" :rommie:

(Gabby, it was worth it if JUST for that moment!)

And of course, I liked how it ended... but then I'm always a sucker when these two (Gabby and Eve) get together!

Xena: (Eve is crying in her mother's arms) "Oh-h-h. Oh-h-h-h-h-h. It's all right."
Gabrielle: "Can I? Can I try?" (Gabby's dripping wet, like the proverbial drowned rat!)
Xena: (Looking suspiciously at her wet friend, waiting for her to keel over yet again from her recent concussion) "I don't know. You sure you're all right?"
Gabrielle: (Don't you love her smile?) "Better than ever. "
Xena: (Begrudgingly) "All right. OK. Sh-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h."
Gabrielle: (Walks around the dock, whispering to the bundle of joy in her arms as Xena smiles.) "Sh-sh-sh-h-h-h-h-h-h. I have a new story for you. This woman fell into the deep blue sea... and she found herself in another world."

I love the fact that Eve has helped to bring out the Bard in Gabby once more.

:bolian:

Married with Fishsticks is hated by many but I like it, lovely to see Gabby in her mommy role, lovely to see her and 'Joxer' playing house and the relationship between Gabby and her youngest spawn is very cute. Also some great stuff with Aphrodite and Discord with for once Dite taking the back seat giving her niece the chance to shine. I wouldn't want Xena to be like this all the time but it makes a nice change once in a while.

Hey, I liked it a LOT more than Vanishing Act! :rommie:

You know, if they were going to have a AU Joxer & Gabrielle, I'd have prefered him to be Joxer instead of "Joxer". Except for the thing with the baby King, he's usually an honorable (if clueless) man, but Hagar wasn't. I think that's what put me off it so much. That and the Baby Roe thing. [As Amarice told Xena... "I can't go there, you'll have to {like that rubber thing} on your own." ;) ]

I also would have preferred it if we had some little inkling who caused the dream... maybe a deep throaty chuckle from Poseidon suggesting he was at fault and was actually trying to break up the gods fighting duo of X&G.

Episode 106 season 5 #16 "Lifeblood"

AKA "We Had to Save Money" ;)

The DVD interviews for this one are with Tapert and the "credited director" Michael Hurst. Because of union rules, if someone's work is used in another work, YOU get the credit for the final product if they use a certain number minutes/% of the product. Hurst had directed a pilot called "Amazon High" with Claudia Black (YEA, Aeryn Sun!) and Danielle MacCormack (YEA Ephiny!) which was never picked up. So, in the spirit of what worked in season 4 ("Past Imperfect") TPTB tried to take large chunks of that show (about the birth of the Amazon tribe centuries ago) and wrap it into a current Xena story.

Lets just say... unlike "Past Imperfect", this one isn't on a lot of "Top Ten Xena" lists. :rommie:

In a way, the best way to deal with it is how I deal with "Vanishing Act" and "The Play's the Thing". I like the beginning, and the end, and sparingly sample parts from the middle. ;)

This season we finally got our "Bard" back, starting a few months ago in "Punchlines" when Gabby was counseled by Aphrodite re: her writers block and again last "week" in "Married with Fishsticks" when we see Gabrielle actually tell Eve a story.

In this ep, maybe for the first time since season 1's Academy show, we hear Gabrielle tell a story about Xena...

TEASER OPENS: Gabrielle is the unseen Narrator.

"It was the birth of the Amazon nation and of their legendary warrior, Samsara, whose lust for blood perverted their history for eons. Then Xena, brought her daughter, Eve, to receive the Amazon right of caste. This is the story of Eve's initiation and of the Amazon rebirth."

Xena: "You know, Gabrielle, you don't have to do this."
Gabrielle: "I wanna do it, Xena. You gave Eve life. The least I can do is make her an Amazon Princess."
Xena:
"Hm-m."
Gabrielle: "Don't you want me to give her my right of caste?"
Xena: "I don't know. I used to think that I had to go through life alone, that anything else was a sign of weakness. So I traded my home and family for... violence, blood, so much blood. I never want Eve to know that life. Maybe if she becomes an Amazon, she'll always feel a part of something."
Gabrielle: "She will."
Xena: "But you're right. A caste, that's a pretty precious gift."
Gabrielle: "Xena, we're all family. I love her like my own daughter."
Xena: "Well, if that's the way you feel ."

Ladies, please. We're walking to SIBERIA! Is this the time to be having second thoughts about the rite of caste? YOU two may have Gams of steel, but Argo is getting to look tired of all this cross continental travel. ;)

Our friends arrive at the Amazon village just in time for a funeral. For several funerals, in fact, including the woman who lead the tribe this last year... Yakute. Xena got more than she bargained as she gazed upon her burning bier... Yakute's spirit sat up and hit her with a bolt... sending her into a memory of a war centuries old.

TEASER ENDS

Bottom line... Yakute's spirit can't enter Amazon afterlife because her mission on earth was left undone. She must save her tribe from its love for vengence... a touchy subject right now, given the death of so many sisters at the hands of their enemies.

The girls learn one of the dead sisters was Amarice (the actress was cast to play in Tapert's "Cleopatra 2525") and she left Gabrielle's Amazon necklace behind to be returned to the Bard. Before she died she added a stone for "Eve", who's arrival was foretold by Yakute. Yakute told her tribe they would welcome Eve and pass Gabby's rite of caste on to her. (Before she can pass on her rites, Gabrielle has to be installed as Queen. Amazing when you consider that Queen Gabrielle is actually Queen of the Greek Amazons, NOT of the Siberian ones, but I digress. ;) )

With all the death around, Xena's getting cold feet about the rite of caste stuff, but Gabby talks her into it anyway. The only problem is the ceremonies are closed to nonAmazons like Xena, so Auntie Gabrielle takes over as Xena goes off to commune so more with Yakute's spirit. Xena sends Yakute off to search the land of the dead for a dagger which carries the memories of the original Amazons, and eventually uses it to bend the current ones away from their blood lustful ways towards peace.

Auntie Gabrielle's initiation into this tribe is a little more intense than her old tribe... but she goes along with it until they try to sacrifice a horse to harvest his blood to bath Eve with it.

(Yeah... gets a little gross in the middle. :wtf:)

Xena shows up in time to save Eve from the "bloodbath" and the horse from the blood letting, and with Yakute's help AND the dagger the tribe is reformed.

With Gabby's help, they devise a NEW initiation into the tribe with a watery baptism which ends the show as Yakutes spirit ascends to a higher plain.

I'm not even going to try and tell the story of the "original Amazons"... its too difficult and doesn't matter anyway.

I will end as the show ended... with the unseen narrator.

Gabrielle: "And so the Amazon legacy, to temper might with mercy, was restored thanks to the innocence of a child and the wisdom of Xena."

Whew, thank the gods that's over. I will admit, however, that what comes next, in this village/series, is a huge improvement! :techman:

Another interlude; I never promised you a Rose Garden:

I know, I'm a very shallow boy.

Ummm, as someone who has recently been writing on the hairlength and relative hotness of Ares vs Hercules... I can UNDERSTAND that mentality!

I assume Selma was the modern girl transported from the future?

I remember watching this the first time (didn't note the credits) and sitting up straight when Aeryn Sun showed up and screamed AERYN! :rommie:

Michael Hurst was interesting on the DVDs reliving his memories of filming the big fight/battle scenes with the newly conquered horses and the cannibles. Tapert was laughing about fishing in New Zealand and always running into locals who were part of that huge battle.

Really? I thought she was terrible in Cruel Intentions?

For the most part this is an interesting curiousity, always nice to see the junior Amazons again and Ephiny/Danielle. And of course Karl Urban get's his 4th role on the show. Still, like you I'm glad to get back to business as usual

Sad to say goodbye to Yakut but what happened to Otere? Also is this where we learn that Amarice is dead? Gabby the Black Widow strikes again

Saturn5, you'll have to explain your main man to me this week.. Not the peeping Tom stuff, I'm pretty sure I undertand his motivations there . No, please explain how someone can walk all the way from Greece to SIBERIA, and FORGET to bring with him the letter from Cleopatra! :vulcan:

This is what Tapert calls a "relationship" ep since there's only "1" fight and the ep had to be shot in just 5 days.

For such a "lowkey" ep, I found it fascinating in the insights it gave to not just the Xena/Gabrielle relationship but to the personality of Xena herself.

That's the way it is:

In the teaser to LAST weeks ep... Xena tells Gabrielle "I used to think that I had to go through life alone, that anything else was a sign of weakness. So I traded my home and family for... violence, blood, so much blood. I never want Eve to know that life. Maybe if she becomes an Amazon, she'll always feel a part of something."

A puzzling concept, since for the 10 years before Gabby came into her life, Xena WASN'T "alone", she was either in or at the head of an Army or Pirate Navy.

Of course, one can be alone in a crowd. That aloneness was even something Xena chafed under in the series pilot, so long ago, when she confessed to her brother... "... Since you've been gone, I kind of lost my way. Now, I found it. I thought I could start over. But no. They don't trust me. Not even Mother. I can't blame her. She can't see into my heart. But I've got to believe that you can. And I wish you were here. It's hard to be alone."

As for the last 5 years... after Gabby came into her life, Xena was, well, quite frankly she was never alone.

Maybe that's the point. She wanted Eve to have the community of Amazons to fall back upon, until she found someone with whom to travel the world.

I've laughed for several seasons at Xena's peripatetic ways, from Greece to China (twice in 3 years) to Britannia to Siberia (3 times in the last 2 years) to India, to Rome to Morocco and soon to Egypt. But laugh as I might, what happens to the shark when she stops swimming? What happens to Xena when she stops moving?

TEASER OPENS: With much intercutting between dozens of naked/partially clothed Amazons down at the watering hole, taking a bath, and scenes of deerskin covered Gabrielle and Xena back at the Queen's hut in the Amazon village. Xena has just invented the baby swing.

Gabrielle: (Walks up carrying Eve as Xena pulls back on what looks like a very large sling.) "Don't shoot! Lady with a baby."
Xena: "It's for the baby, Goober. It's a swing. Here, put her in it."
Gabrielle: [Sighs as she slips Eve into it.] "Here you go. Easy, now. Aren't you a lucky girl?"
Xena: "There you go, Eve." (She gently pushes the swing and Eve is now swinging forward towards Gabrielle)
Gabrielle: "She likes it." (Gabrielle catches her and gently pushes her back towards Xena.)
Xena: "But of course."
Gabrielle: "I always knew it was gonna happen. You're nesting."
Xena: "Nesting? 'cause I built a swing."
Gabrielle: "Xena, it's perfectly natural. You're a mother. Actually, I feel the same way."
Xena: "What way is that?"
Gabrielle: "Have you ever thought about settling down? Here?"
Xena: (Smiles) "Like when I'm too old to do kicks and stuff?"
Gabrielle: "No, I mean right now. Xena, it's a beautiful place. You could raise Eve here."
Xena: (Suspicious) "What are you talking about?"
Gabrielle: "These kids need someone. They need guidance. They need...me."
Xena: (On alert.) "Gabrielle, are you saying that you wanna stay here and be queen?"
Gabrielle: "Well, only if you and Eve would stay. I think you should consider it." (Bends down to Eve in the swing to try and sway HER vote.) "You wanna stay, don't you? Don't you?" (Xena looks concerned)

As Sat5 can probably attest, there's a very funnny B story weaving through this ep that involves one Joxer, allegedly "the Mighty". He was caught peeping at naked Amazons as they bathed and was brought before the Queen for judgement.

Loved it when he tried to have Xena vouch for him as he's kneeling before their Queen...

Xena: (Leans close to his ear) "Did you bring the letter from Cleopatra, like I asked."
Joxer: "Oh, that. Uh-- I-I forgot again." (Xena expresses her displeasure physically) "Ow!"
Xena: (Walks away, hands in the air!) "Never saw this man before in my life."
Gabrielle: "Do you deny spying on these women?"
Joxer: "I resent that."
Gabrielle: "Do you deny it?"
Joxer: "No, I just resent it."

Meanwhile, back to the original question, what happens to a WARRIOR Princess when her best friend becomes QUEEN?

In this village which now has not only a baby to entertain the women, but now has a man standing in the stocks to stimulate their curiosity, many questions are being raised. Most of them by the teenagers. Loved the "seminar" being held in the community sauna... Xena on one side, Gabrielle on the other both geographically, and psychologically whether in life or in bed.

(This is one of those scenes that demands a personal viewing, just to see their faces and hear their delivery! IIRC there's got to be at least 10 women in the sauna.)

Cyane: "I had a man before I joined the Amazons."
Rhea: "It's tough for an Amazon to meet men."
Eris: "Well, I'm a virgin... and I'm gonna stay that way forever."
Xena: (Smiles at Gabrielle, across the room over the innocence of youth) "Forever's a long time." (Gabrielle smiles back)
Rhea: "What's it like? Being with a man?"
Xena: "The good news is..." (Points to Rhea) "...it's different every time. The bad news is it's different every time. You're always hoping for Greek fire but sometimes you just get diddly."
Gabrielle: (I die at Gabby's expression here!) "Xena has studied the subject more than I have, but I think she's trying to say is that some people are better lovers than others." (And now laugh at Xena's expression here!)
Rhea: "What makes a man a good lover? Being gentle and kind?"
Xena: "No."
Gabrielle: "Yes." (Looks up, realizing she's contradicting her friend) "It's a complicated subject."
Xena: (Reassuringly) "You'll figure out what suits you best as you get older."
Rhea: "But how can I? Every time we see a man they want to kill us. How can we meet nice guys, even not-so-nice guys? It seems like a lost cause."
Eris: "You don't need a man, unless you want a baby and we've got Eve to play with."
Rhea: "Not for long. They're taking Eve with them when they go."
Gabrielle: "Actually, we're considering settling down here." (Xena looks up, surprised)
Eris: (Hops down next to Xena) "You mean you might stay? Great! We have to start making preparations! We need a formal coronation for our new queen!"
Xena: (LOOKS at Gabrielle) "Actually, I think we're moving a little fast here."
Gabrielle: "Right. We're only considering staying."

Remember, oh, about 7 months ago in the land of Ch'in, when the young resistance fighter asked Gabrielle if she ever thought of settling down and Gabrielle told him "You know, sometimes people think that a home is a place. It can be a person."

Sounds like Gabrielle is looking for a different answer.

The next morning, the two are awoken by the sound of the Rams horn, calling the Queen to a ceremony. Before Gabby takes off, Xena asks a practical question, but I don't think she appreciated the answer. ;)

Xena: "You know what, Gabrielle? I don't know that this is gonna work. Look, what am I supposed to do around here all day while you're off `queening'?"
Gabrielle: "Relax."
Xena: "Yeah, that's me."
Gabrielle: "You could try cleaning this place up a bit, playing with your daughter, unless you just want to hunt and kill something."
Xena:
"Yeah, I might just do that."

Loved Xena's logic as she discusses staying with Eve!

Xena: (Puts Eve the Amazon princess, in the swing) "Oh-h-h-h, that's better, huh? Oh, Evie you know what? One day, all of this will be yours. Mind you, here you're safe from the Greek gods, Gabrielle's happy, place is loaded with baby sitters. Could work... hm-m.

Ok, I'm going to be "good" and not mention the funniest line Gabrielle said when she woke up in the throne room.

:vulcan:

Where is the logic in being "good", when something is this humorous?

Oh what the heck... its probably more of a "had to be there" comment anyway.

Gabby is "sleeping" on the antler decorated throne (which matches her headress, by the way) as Joxer is being lead in, still with the block/stock around his neck.

Joxer: (Stumbles along) "Ow-w-w-w-w-w-w."
Cyane: (Sees sleeping Gabby) "Queen Gabrielle!"
Gabrielle:
(Wakes with a jerk) "Not tonight. [Sighs as she looks around and realizes where she is.]

Gabby thinks she's got everything covered, and sentences Joxer to a "day" in the block which counting time served means he'll be free by lunchtime. Unfortunately, she didn't know about the mandatory sentencing laws in the tribe, and discovers Joxer's defined punishment is to lose an EYE!

While Gabrielle is dealing with the Amazon legal system, Xena is dealing with a groupie. And Xena is no fool, she knows what to do with fangirls who are trying their best to impress her... she puts her to work cleaning the house!

Loved the scene where Xena is outside whittling and Eve is crawling around on the ground. The courageous little tike crawls into a hollow log who's other end fronts onto the camp fire. As she's about halfway down the log, Xena takes her whip, snaps it at the log until it ensnares a broken limb and tugs, spinning the log around so that when she exits, Eve is back at Mom's feet.

(I LOVE Warrior Princess MOM!) :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

Gabby stops by to tell her about Joxer, and is IMPRESSED at how clean/tidy everything looks. She takes heart from Xena's apparent attempt to "make this work", and she goes back to the throne room to do the same. For her part, Xena does look a LITTLE chagrined at this unearned praise.

Xena tries to escape the Amazons by going hunting, but is entrapped by her groupie to join a dance practice for Gabrielle's Coronation. Xena tries hard for about 30 seconds, but tires quickly of all the youngsters gyrating around her and calls it quits.

What happens next is the most fascinating part of the entire ep, and the one time in this series that I felt their friendship was really on the line.

(Xena walks away from the Amazon younglings and runs into an unhappy Gabrielle. )
Xena: (Looks up at a more elaborate headress than she wore earlier) "Hey, you make that yourself?"
Gabrielle: (NOT in a joking mood) "Xena, I can make a difference with this tribe. You do understand that, don't you?"
Xena: (Face is blank) "I do."
Gabrielle: (Understands) "You don't."
Xena:
(Honestly) "No, I don't! .... Look, it's not that I haven't tried, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "Tried? Xena, I can dance better than that."
Xena: "This is just not me, all right? This whole place, the... the shared meals, communal bathing, group laundry day. All this togetherness is making me sick! I can hardly breathe."
Gabrielle: (Still very quiet, but definately becoming more accusatory) "You never intended to stay, did you?"
Xena: (Xena looks like she's been slapped. She stops being open and honest and starts withdrawing into herself) "You know, I think that maybe me and Eve should go away for a while up north, where the salmon are running, some good weather, do some fishing."
(A Gauntlet has just been thrown down.)
Gabrielle: (Pauses significantly before giving an UNexpected response) "That's probably a good idea."
Xena: (Pauses as if weighing her next words.) "It is."
Gabrielle: (She's shocked. She's really hurt.) "You really think so, don't you?"
Xena: (Pauses yet again before answering) "Yeah, I do." (DVDs. Must buy DVDs, or netflix or SOMETHING just to watch THIS scene!!!) "So, I'll head back and get some things together then after the coronation, Eve and I are outta here."

:wah:

Part 2 Kindred Spirits

The girls spend the night apart, not because they are fighting, but because Queen Gabrielle has to stay up all night with the Amazons, covered in mud, howling at the moon. The next day, as Xena brings Argo around, she discovers her groupie is back, and looking for a "position".

Eris: (Word travels fast in a small village!) "Xena, now that you and Gabrielle are broken up, you definitely need a new travelling partner."
Xena: (Oh sweet oblivious Princess) "No, no, hang on see, Gabrielle and I have only separated for a couple of weeks, just so we can work things out. So I'm gonna get a few things together. Can you look after Eve?"
Eris: "Oh, yeah."
Xena: "There you go." (Hands off the baby so she can go into the hut and collect the rest of her things)
Eris: "Sure."
Xena: "Won't be long"

When she comes out again, Eris has a surprise for her.

Xena: [Sighs, you decide why.]
Eris: "I took the liberty of packing some of my stuff for the trip."
Xena: "The trip?"
Eris: "If you only want me for a couple of weeks, I can live with that. It'll be a great experience and who knows what'll develop."
Xena: "Eris, I'm not looking for a sidekick, temporary or otherwise. I'm sorry. Come on, Evie."
Eris: (Looking down at her feet, embarassed at her forwardness, and what she now must admit.) "I took out some of those scrolls over there to make room for some of my stuff. I didn't know what you wanted to do with them. I think they belong to Gabrielle."
Xena: "OK thanks. I'll get 'em."
(Xena picks up a bundle of scrolls on a nearby stool, and brings them into the hut. Eve is on her left hip. She sits down at the table as the scrolls spill over it, and she asks Eve...)
Xena: "You wanna hear a story, hm-m? Let's have a look. Hey...`The r-r-r-r-return of Callisto' (Looks down at the daughter in her lap)"This'll be a good one." (Starts to read aloud) `I sing... of the wrath of Callisto... the pain of Gabrielle... and the courage of Xena... (her face changes and I must correct the transcript from Whoosh.) and the ineffable mystery of a friendship as immortal as the gods."

Meanwhile, back in the throne room, Gabby found a way for Joxer to keep his eyes. But one of the Amazons freed him and they were caught in a compromising position in the storage shed and now Joxer must face an even worse punishment. A Royal challenge to the death with the Queen herself.

Gabrielle has escaped back to the sauna, alone this time, to try and reason a way out of this mess. Like most writers, she talks aloud when alone, to clear her thoughts. She doesn't see Xena walk in the door behind her.

Gabrielle: (Pacing in the sauna) "Think, Gabrielle. Think. [Sighs] There's gotta be a way out of this. What made me think I could be a good queen?"
Xena: "Your heart."
Gabrielle: (Spins back to see her other problem standing before her) "Did you pack?"
Xena: "Yeah I'm almost done. Listen, Eris found some of your scrolls in my saddle bag."
Gabrielle: (Does she wonder why ERIS found them? If so, we can't tell.) "I must have left them there at the last camp. You can leave them in the hut, Xena."
Xena: (Slowly comes closer) "That's just it. I can't. I read 'em."
Gabrielle: (Surprised) "You read my scrolls?"
Xena: (Shrugs) "I always said I would."
Gabrielle: (That was a year ago!) "I didn't think that... Well?"
Xena: (Ineffable... you don't need to look it up. Its at the start of the first part of this review.) "I think that anyone who writes like you can, who can find grace and meaning in everything that happens, she's sure to make a wonderful queen. And that's worth sticking around to see." (Gabrielle's face says it all.) "So, what's this I hear about a royal challenge between you and Joxer?"
Gabrielle: "Joxer was caught kissing Rhea. I have to fight him to the death. It's Amazon law, Xena. There's no other way."
Xena: "They're certain to want a good show."
Gabrielle: "They're not kidding."
Xena: "Don't worry. You won't have to kill him."
Gabrielle: "Why not?"
Xena: "'Cause I will."

Okay, after all that touchy feely relationship stuff, we have to have some Rock em Sock em stuff, and so Xena puts on "a show" for the Amazons. Its funny to watch her try and signal Joxer to "follow her lead" in the Wrestling Bravado speak and the physical posturing.

I LOVED (I know, I sound like I'm betraying my sex, but not really!) it when Joxer gets pissed off and hits Xena three times in quick succession in the face.... (And this is why its not a betrayal) and then REALIZES what he's done and turns to jelly!

Joxer: "Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Doggone it! (Hits Xena three times... but she doesn't fall down, she just STARES back!) Oh! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

Of course, our Warrior Princess, the Amazon Queen's champion DOES kill Joxer as certified by Cyane the wannabe Queen. She just does it with pressure points, which she reverses as soon as he's declared dead. (Very TNG 1st season, if you ask me. ;) )

Cyane: "You tricked us!"
Xena: "You pronounced him dead yourself. Nothing says he has to stay dead."
Cyane: "But our laws... "
Gabrielle: [Interrupts] "... should be changed. When they make someone die for a kiss."

Cyane tries to leave the tribe, but Gabby will have nothing to do with that!

Cyane: "All I wanted was to keep us strong, keep our heritage alive. I thought that's what we needed, what you wanted. My apologies to you and the tribe, and I humbly ask for your permission to leave it."
Gabrielle: (For a minute the Amazon Queen channels Janeway!) "Permission denied. You love this tribe, Cyane. They need you, especially since I'll be leaving... with Xena." (And the Queen smiles at the Princess)
Eris: (Dejectedly) "Guess you won't be needing a new sidekick after all."
Xena: (smiles )"I'm afraid not." (Just about now, Joxer keels over onto his face.) "Every time you turn his brain off."

If that’s what it takes: Gabby's POV...

The ending harkens back to the closing scene of Fins Fems and Gems, but this time Joxer is snoring nearby, rather than acting like an ape man in the woods.

Its short and sweet as Xena plays with Eve who's sitting between the two... and they scope out the next Amazon Queen and discuss where they'll go next.

Gabrielle: "Where are we going next?"
Xena: "Well, I had in mind a cruise down the Nile."
Gabrielle: "Really? Camel racing in Alexandria?"
Xena: "I know someone we can stay with."

Hey, did you never misplace your keys?:p

A slight ep concentrating on the relationship between our girls and some great comedy of Joxer and the Amazons (sounds like a cool spinoff?), we know he's not really going to get hurt and it's funny to see the reaction of all these man-starved girlies to him, reminds me of a hilarious WW fanfic I once read where Steve Trevor goes to Paradise Island and get's mobbed Elvis style:lol:

Not sure about all this howling at the moon stuff, I wonder if the girls have a spice wrack and henna tattoo?
