About Deanna Troi in Season 7

TroiFan4ever

Commander
Red Shirt
I remember I saw my first TNG episode back when I was a baby. I was born in 1990, so TNG was in its, like fourth season if I'm unmistaken? So, anyway, I remember first seeing Dark Page when Troi was being chased by the wolf in the dark corridor. It was the part when she jumped off into space that really got me drawn to the episode. I remember turning to it every time it would air because I was looking for that one episode.
It wasn't until late December 2001 did I get to see that episode again, and I found that the episode was "Dark Page". I did record it and I did get to see the scenes with Troi in the dark corridor! LOVED IT! The end part was kind of sad though.
One thing that interests me - in Liaisons (am I spelling that right?) when Troi's in uniform, she has the season 6 hair but when she's OUT OF uniform in that episode, she has the season 7 hair with the bangs... and that was a season 7 episode.

Back in 2007, I "learned" that the Gambit episodes were the first episodes that Sirtis wore her hair like that. There is a reason that I have "learned" in quotation marks - it's because I was incorrect. The first episode that Troi has the Cinderella-look without the bangs when colored brown was actually Interface with the scene with Geordi talking to her about his mom. It didn't look as good as it did in later in the season. It did look better (and blacker) in the Gambit when Troi yelled at Riker.

I even like Troi's rank - Commander. The first time I saw Thine Own Self was back in the summer of 2005. I remember being hooked to the scene where Troi was studying for the exam and Riker went to her quarters to tell her the exam was cancelled, and Troi was PISSED!

Troi (not really wanting to be bothered by Riker anyway): "Here to give me more encouragement?"

Riker: "No! I'm actually here to tell you that I've decided to cancel the rest of your test."

Troi: "WHAT!? Wil, you douchbag! I'll kill you!"

That ENTIRE scene was pure gold! One thing that scene had that made this scene rock, aside from Deanna being in uniform with that hair, DRAMA! I LOVE drama! Troi was PISSED when Riker canceled her exam. I also love the way she slammed her hand against that glass diagram thing of the Enterprise. After she repeated what Riker said, to herself, it sounded like she cursed after that. She must have been like "Sh*t! Why didn't I figure that out way in the beginning!"

Gotta admit, Troi is kind of sexy when she's mad! *jumps eyebrows*

One thing I would liked to have change about her though, her energy and enthusiasm. She seemed to have a flat... emotion. Well, I see some emotion in Eye of the Beholder.
These are the Voyages / The Pegasus when Riker and Troi were in the holodeck and she was like "he's cute!" Like, she didn't have that much enthusiasm in TNG, or at least not in the episodes I seen her in.

Another scene I really, really enjoyed - when she and Worf were making love in Eye of the Beholder. I always liked the little love connection with Deanna Troi and Worf. I think both Michael and Marina should've gotten an Emmy, just for that one scene there. Love it!!! Only thing though, I just wish it was actually happening and not some fantasy in Troi's head as she just stood there in the Nacelle Room watching the plasma stream. I like Troi with Worf better than she with Riker. Another crewmember I would've loved to have seen Troi with? Geordi.

It sucks that Marina Sirtis didn't have her hair like that in the Generations movie and in Enterprise's finale These Are the Voyages all though it supposedly takes place during the Pegasus episode but I will do a separate thread about that later. AH HA! No wonder why Troi was like, nowhere to be seen after the Captain Picard Day scene of Pegasus - she was too busy exploring the NX-01 in the holodeck!
She should've at least lost the bangs in both makings! I mean - I'm not hating or anything but the bangs are one thing when she wears the lavender jumpsuit but her Generations look where she has the bangs WITH the uniform... needs to go, fast!

Someone on YouTube posted the behind the scene of the finale of TNG and after All Good Things finished making and when I saw Marina Sirtis working with the musicians I was really disappointed when she wore the jumpsuit instead of the uniform. According to the uploader's reply comment when I posted the same complaint, they must have brought Marina out to help the musicians during the scene where she wears the jumpsuit (which has to be the poker scene at the very end as this was the only time in either parts where she has that on). If she would've worn her blue science uniform for that making, that would've been an EPIC WIN! I wanna touch Troi's abundant hair! I love that hair - her standard hair when she's in uniform. I do understand however, that as time progresses it would be abnormal for someone to retain the same hairstyle for years and years on end but words can't begin to describe how much I DIG that Season 7 look!

I have to ask, is THIS Marina Sirtis? Also playing the Frog Troi in Genesis? I can't really tell but seeing her in certain positions it's kind of hard to tell. I know that this is obviously and definitely Marina Sirtis all though she messed her hair up for this bath scene. It is kind of unclear however as to why Deanna would take a bath in her uniform, anyway!
I'm currently working on a Star Trek novel that takes place (yep, you guessed it) during Season 7 of TNG and the character of focus is (you guessed that correctly too) Deanna Troi. I'm having a bit of trouble getting the storyline straight

I wanted to bring fourth two DS9 characters (Ben Sisko and Jaxia Dax) but the other problem is, I never really had an interest in Deep Space Nine as I did for the Next Generation so I don't really know them and plus, I wrote down everything i would like to happen in this episode and also Worf first went to DS9 in season 4. But TNG S7 is during DS9 S2 so Sisko doesn't even know Worf yet!
But I'll work it out...

Is or was Marina Sirtis wearing a wig during the making of All Good Things? No, don't answer that. Answer me this - did Sirtis just dye her hair black for the flashback scenes? During the first season, I would've liked to have seen more episodes where Troi wears the cheerleader-looking uniform. I did like the princess look, though with the black attire and the bun. Speaking of that look, I wanna note how she does wear the burgundy jumpsuit in Parallels and Thine Own Self, the blue dress in Parallels, the lavender jumpsuit in... (I'm not going through EVERY episode but starting with Dark Page on) but NEVER the princess look from season 1 with the bun and the black jumpsuit. It would've been interesting if she would have had that look in a scene in one of the Season 7 episodes.

Hopefully, if I ever get to go meet Marina Sirtis at a Star Trek convention, I will wear that blue uniform (a replica of Troi's with three pips for a Commander rank) and get her to sign me an autograph on this picture. But first, I have to photoshop edit the picture to make it more... brighter and enhance the blue color because it's too dark. Unfortunately, though my Photoshop trial ran out and I didn't get around to editing that picture... so I'm screwed!

Does anybody happen to know which episode this picture was from?

In fact, this is EXACTLY WHY blue became my favorite color and three became my favorite number (the number of pips on her colar).

When I was in first grade, my mom and her boyfriend (not my dad) took me to go fishing for a costume for an upcoming Halloween party and discovered the Star Trek uniforms they had available. Unfortuately the one I got wasn't the one I wanted. The one I had was a red uniform with the four pips. It was Picard's uniform. I wanted Troi's... obviously. Nonetheless, I did have a bit of fun wearing that outfit.

According to Wikipedia, Sirtis claimed in an interview that she'd much rather wear the uniform anyway because it covers her cleavage and it gives her more... [respect?] as an actual crewmember of the Enterprise, so it's the Best of Both Worlds there...

Ok, I'm done wasting you guys' time yacking away about Troi in uniform now lol...

Troi: "WHAT!? Wil, you douchbag! I'll kill you!"

That's a good one  She wasn't that mad when he called her "aristocratic".

Thing is, there were many variations on the blue or green color of the uniform.

In Remember Me, Doctor Crusher's uniform and that of Doctor Quaice are different shades of green altogether, and they're both doctors and both in the same scenes, so it can't be the "lighting" excuse.

And I know I've seen a more blue color in other episodes, I've never been certain if there were supposed to be two separate colors for different departments.

Hey, TroiFan, I also like our resident half-Betazed counselor, and liked it when she got more to do than just say,"I'm sensing a life-form." Making her become a full commander gave her more to do. She should have been a full commander and second officer from the start of the show, IMO, partly because Data just seemed too naive to be third-in-command of the ship at times.

I just wanna know why the ship's counselor stopped being Deanna Troi and started being Marina Sirtis.

When TNG first started airing my girlfriend at the time would complain fairly regularly about the fact that the only character with a unique uniform just "happened" to be "the one with the big boobs."

Counselor Cleavage!

Troi should always have worn a standard uniform on duty and saved her puppies for her off duty uniforms. When they moved her to the non-standard one she became Counselor Troi instead of Lt-commander Troi and I'm not even sure that most of the writers were aware that she was an officer. She was utilised quite well in season one when her primary role was as a diplomatic advisor to Picard but it went downhill until season 6. Marina was always well up for more action and she is quoted as saying that they were only just getting the hang of her character when the show was cancelled. If they had ditched 90% of her passive empathy to avoid instant plot spoiling and made her a projective telepath like Callie in Blakes 7, they could have used her in the advisor role very effectively.

Personally, as written I don't think she should ever have been promoted to commander at that point in her career. She needed to know what it took BEFORE applying not learn it while taking the test. The plot would have worked just as well if at the end of it she had failed because she just wasn't cut out for it and maybe passed the test in the next series. Not as bad as promoting a cadet to captain after one mission but still a bit silly.

I did see in one special that they wanted to change her looks throughout the show but I am with you with wearing the uniform more often.

I really don't wanna admit this because I like her better as a full commander but I agree. "I may have trouble telling the difference between a plasma conduit and a phase inducer..." was pretty much a give away that she should'nt have passed.

Kind of sad how she only passed for telling Geordi to go kill himself in Engineering however. Why have someone gamble their life like that?

Was it? She didn't want to be an engineer, she wanted to be able to take command of the ship, not fix it herself.

Meh... I think Troi managed to shine a lot as a pretense role of a Tal-Shiar agent on board a Romulan Warbird that was transporting dissidents to the Federation (forgot the name of the episode).

She's a staff corps officer, not a line officer. Maker her second in command would have made no sense.

So that's why she never wore a uniform for 3/4 of the show...

The blue-green uniforms were extremely difficult to make; the dye wouldn't take consistently in the fabric, hence the color variations. The red and yellow, however, dyed true consistently.

When the Spandex was used for men and women (the first two years) the only color available off the shelf was the cranberry used for command. The umber gold and peacock colors were dyed in small lots for the first year, and there was quite a bit of variation in color from lot to lot. According to Theiss, the show was budgeted to have a lot of the fabric done all together for the second year. However, at the beginning of the third year the male costumes were changed over to a stretch wool gabardine, and the shades of color achievable didn't match the results on the Spandex exactly.

Supposedly, there were occasionally shots in which the director had to arrange actors so as not to put two characters wearing radically different versions of the "same uniform" too close together.

Dennis, thanks for that. I knew there were dye problems, but I hadn't heard how extensive they were. Much obliged. :)

You know, I don't I've ever properly appreciated Deanna Troi as a character or as the beautiful woman she was (Marina Sirtis still is).

Deanna nor Beveraly Crusher really did that much for me during the original run of TNG. It wasn't until I saw Kira Nerys and Jadzia Dax that I developed any sort of crush on a Trek character. It was also around this time that I discovered Nichelle Nichols' legs.

but yeah, Deanna...

I liked Deanna Troi as a character in general, but I think she could have been developed more deeply. We never knew what years she attended Starfleet Academy, or how she even became an officer (and one without command training, which surely all officers must get by virtue of being an officer).

Marina Sirtis was and still is a beautiful woman, so that in itself is a plus. :techman:
