5th TNG film & Picard (series)

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard

Commodore
Commodore
The Next Generation ended in 1994. Later that year, we got Generations followed by First Contact in 1996, Insurrection in 1998, and finally Nemesis in 2002. I remember that the plan was for Nemesis to either be the TNG finale or lead into a 5th film which would definitely be the TNG finale. I also remember fans wanting a Q-centric movie before TNG came to an end. Fast forward 20 years later, and we got the Picard series. The first two seasons playing out as a spin-off (Picard post-TNG), the final season playing out as TNG S8. I remember feeling that PIC S3 effectively made up for being robbed of that 5th film. 20 years later, we got a 10-hour serial instead of a 2-hour film. Not a bad trade off. Everyone's old and fat, but they got an extra 8 hours to tell their final story. We got that Q story everyone wanted in the form of PIC S2, but with a lot of WTF and CSI: Picard going on.

Do you see any other elements of the Picard show that fans were wanting back when the movies were happening in the 90's?

Picard season 3 did things like make Data human and it gave Geordi a viable relationship with a female human being. It resurrected the Enterprise D. It clarified that Jean-Luc and Dr Beverley had a romantic relationship during the events of TNG (and after). That gave Picard the legacy that he regretted was lost with the death of Rene in the shape of Jack. It brought Jim Kirk's body back from Veridian 3. It seemed to right a lot of wrongs that occured during the movies and fulfilled things that fans of the show wanted.

For me, I've only ever cried at 2 movies/tv shows in my life. The first was Terminator 2 when I was about 9 or 10 but I don't mind saying I was an emotional wreck every week from watching Picard season 3 from episode 4 onwards (in a good way). I loved every minute of it and I am so grateful to everyone who was involved in making it.

#1 Bringing Data back as a synth (like Picard and Soji) was a good move. I think Data is "old" because the golem was going to be for Soong, but he decided to revive Data instead. Yes? No?
#2 Geordi having a family after endless failed attempts on TNG is indeed awesome.
#3 I thought it was dumb to resurrect the Ent-D, but I get what they were going for, coming full circle.
#4 I did love the Picard/Beverly stuff, loved Jack Crusher.
#5 I didn't like Kirk's body being locked up in storage. Should have been left on Veridian III where he died.

yeah, was just typing too fast. first 2 seasons i didn't make it all the way through. S3 was a must-watch.

Hard pass on more direct TNG tales. The story has been told. It has had more endings than Return of the King. Let it go.
It doesn't have that many endings. There's the TNG finale (All Good Things...), the movie finale (Nemesis), and then PIC S3 which aimed to make up for us never getting that 5th & final film. Three endings. :p

I get the disdain for S2.  Why disdain for S1?
it was all just unnecessary. the way they treated characters like hugh and icheb, and maddox, who wasn't even the right actor; everyone acting out of character, just crapping all over the place for no reason. i'm not that interested in desconstructing tropes or whatever nonsense they were trying to do. didn't really like the new characters, and the most interesting one, the romulan elf, really didn't do anything. just wasn't a fan until it turned into the TNG reunion show, which is odd, considering at the time, i didn't realize there was that much nostalgia to even play on. The Kirk / Genesis II scene honestly was the difference maker. i'm simple like that.

Sooner or later the natives of that system will go to other planets in their system. Leaving a body behind would violate the Prime Directive.

Its why I despise Generations, ruining the end of TUC.
I simply ignore it.

There is a certain aspect of fantasy to fictional franchises is allowing it to just end when I decide it. I'm not what some might call a completionist. Certain things just work better as their own thing: TNG, TOS, the Stargate movie, Chronicles of Riddick, etc.

But, I'm funny that way*

*All due respect to Night Court and Buddy Ryan.

I am in the vast minority that really enjoyed Nemesis. That being said, the plan for a follow up movie was Brent Spiner's "Justice League of Trek" which used time travel to unite all available goodies with all available baddies as the rivals. It probably would have tied into Enterprise's temporal cold war. Data's beamed away a second before being blown up. I don't think it would have scratched anyone's TNG itch.

I liked Picard season 1 a lot, despite a very flat ending. It took someone we knew and put them in a new context. It had repercussions, it had consequences.

Season 2 was a mess.

Season 3 was Star Trek: The Next Generation: Fanwank Explosion. It undid everything about season 1 that it possibly could, brought everyone back in the most ridiculous and over the top manner possible. If JJ Abrams had his Enterprise fly though a Borg cube people would still be making rage posts, but because it's the Enterprise-D it gets a pass:lol:
It was a lot of fun, but I'm glad we've all moved on.

I don’t think that what the poster was asking about.

Anyways...

- The Q story
- Data lives
- One final adventure with the Ent-D
- Captain Riker/Riker commanding the Titan
- Romulans as the antagonists (NEM was Remans & a Picard clone, not Romulans)
- Crossover with TOS, DS9, VOY & ENT via Fleet Museum (hero ships from all the shows), characters (Tuvok, Seven of Nine), antagonists (Changelings), and plot (Frontier Day, which celebrated 250 years of Starfleet)
- TOS style adventure
- A mirror universe of sorts with the Confederation timeline
- Picard & Beverly
- The inclusion of Wesley and Ro Laren
- Guinan playing a role in the plot
- Involvement of Lore
