3D Trek Related Misc Projects

Out of the blue!
Hello everyone. Some of you will remember me from my other work here, while others will think "Who the..?" Either way, I have had an extended absence from this board for a few months and unfortunately, I have had to put all previous projects on a bit of a hold. The realized cetacean ops project (linked above) has been put on a hiatus for an undetermined amount of time, though it will be picked back up. Apologies to those who were anticipating a bit more work on that project.

A little info...

This thread will be for all of my misc. trek-related 3d creations like props, random interior segments, canon & non-canon project ideas, etc. My other thread, linked above, will remain specific to my interior works on the Enterprise D.

Now, on with the show!
Let's just jump right into it - I have a current ongoing project that I only recently have been able to make some real progress with. The project at its core is a simple set of modular hallways and prop pieces made in Blender and ready to export to Unreal Engine. These hallways are lower poly than my high-fidelity work, but it is to import into Unreal - if I ever fully figure that out fully. From there it would be polished up into a complete interactive non-canon ship - The USS Vidya.

Name: USS Vidya FCS-5625 B
Construction: Utopia Planitia Shipyard - 2368

About the ship: This is a non-canon station/ship within the Star Trek Universe. Vidya is Sanskrit for right truth or right knowledge. It was chosen by its architect - a Vulcan who was highly fascinated in Earth's ancient schools of thought. FCS stands for First Contact Station. This designation was only given to 14 Starfleet vessels.

Purpose: To act as a mobile and on-demand secret outpost for long-term monitoring & study of planetary civilizations. Will also act as the point of operations for the preparation and execution of first-contact missions.

Role #1: To secretly observe & study planetary and system-wide civilizations in preparation for first contact.
Role #2: Once first contact has been made the USS Vidya can transition its role to that as a primary hosting and meeting facility for all parties involved with first contact.

Armament: 3 Type-X phaser banks. 1 Photon torpedo launcher.
Decks: 9
Warp: Cruise - 2.7. Top - 4.9. Uses an experimental warp bubble design that allows it to change course without dropping from warp, making up for its lack of top speed with instant acceleration.

Notes: This is not a traditional station or ship, and there were only 4 others built like it. From outward appearance, it is bulky and not very sleek. Considering its role, however, the design choices begin to become more obvious. While it was capable of warp travel, it spent much of its time stationary (missions could last anywhere between 2 - 4 years) within a star system.

One design difference is the much larger interiors. The hallways span over 10ft wide and are brightly lit to allow for plenty of movement even with a packed ship, which it often became once the Vidya transitioned to its second role.

Below is an overview of the decks, along with their functions and what facilities might be found on each:

Deck 01 (Command Deck) – Bridge /Battle Station 01 / Observation Room / Security Station / Critical Mission Related Operations

Deck 02 (General Mission Related) –Transporter Room 01 / Holodeck 01 / Cargo Bay 01 / Shuttle Bay /General Mission & Ship Related Operations

Deck 03 (Contact Floor) – Transporter Rooms 02 & 03 / Holodeck 02 & 03 / Foreign Affairs &Liaison Services / Misc Offices & Labs

Deck 04 (Recreation) – Bar /Cafeteria / Holodeck 04 & 05 / Gymnasium / Observation Lounges /Arboretum

Deck 05 (Security & Medical) –Medical Facilities & Hospital / Primary Security Office &Brig

Deck 06 (Senior Officers & Guest Quarters) – Living & Guest Quarters / Replicator Lounge

Deck 07 (Officers' Quarters & Guest Quarters) – Living & Guest Quarters / Replicator Lounge

Deck 08 (Engineering Level) – Primary Ship Related Operations / Warp Core / Cargo Bay 02 / Holodeck 06

Deck 09 (Secondary Command Deck) –Battle Station 02 / Observation Room / Security Station / Misc Mission Related

Now on to the renders!
robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-01.jpg

This shot is from deck 02 looking towards the bow of the ship. This deck is primarily used by station officers and other high-ranking, and authorized, individuals. You will find several ship and mission-related facilities on this deck. The door to the right is a private conference room, the door to the left is a GNDN access area. Straight ahead is transporter room 1, and two related offices.

Because this station is meant to handle a wide range of inhabitants at various times it was designed with ample room to provide maximum comfort for those visiting the ship, especially individuals belonging to the first contact civilization.

The handrails along the side are both decorative and utilitarian. The handrails remain retracted by default and can pop out in the event of a station emergency. They can also be set to manually pop out based on the preference of an individual as they navigate.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-02.jpg
You are now facing opposite the way you were just looking; the Stern of the ship is in the direction of the hallway on the left. The port side of the ship is on the right of the image. In the distance is the primary turbolift used when accessing Deck 01, as it gets you closest to the bridge.

The turbolifts for this station are designed differently in that only turbolifts from decks 01 and 02 can access the entire ship. This is to help prevent hostile takeovers of the station.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-03.jpg

Another shot from standing in the same location, just looking towards the Starboard side now. Down the hallway is one of the primary holodecks in this section of the ship. It is used mainly for research and experimentation, not recreation. Let's move on down the left hallway.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-04.jpg

This hallway curves and meanders around off towards the outer edge of the Vidya's starboard side. Down this hallway are various mission-related facilities currently being constructed, which is why the doors are unlabeled.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-05.jpg

What do we have here? Windows? You are approaching the starboard side hallway.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-06.jpg

You'll notice the extended handrails along windows, the only place in which the handrails do not retract.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-06-5.jpg

Looking towards the bow of the ship along the starboard viewing hallway. The door in the distance allows restricted access to the Starboard Junction, a room that allows for access to Jeffries tubes and other internal ship-related compartments. From here you can also see a low-power plasma field vent connected to the shuttle bay force field.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-07.jpg

Little bit better view down the Starboard side of the ship. On the exterior of the ship, in front of the shuttle bay doors, you can see various sensor arrays as well as directional markers and communication lights. This is deceptively large and while it looks like this exterior piece starts well before the starboard junction door, it is further away than it looks. On the lower part of the hull, you can see a hall window from deck 04. The lower runner lights are just visible.

You’ll also notice the lights on the port side of the hallway are off. This is the stations default setting to allow for a more pleasant view from the windows. They do come on in the event of a station emergency.

This is also one of the most popular hallway areas for viewing shuttles coming and going from the station.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-08.jpg

A little closer view at the starboard side shuttle bay. The hallway going off to the left wraps around and heads towards the bow to the shuttle bay, cargo bay 1, and other related offices.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-09.jpg

Just keep walking, walking, waaaaaaaalking.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-10.jpg
You are now looking at the shuttle bay (straight ahead) and cargo bay 1 (to the right, hidden). The controller's office (overseeing incoming and outgoing shuttles) and the quartermaster's office (sees that all outgoing away teams and individuals have the necessary equipment for their journey) are also in this shot, though hidden. The door to the left is another primary turbolift used mostly by officers of the station.

robert-mcnatt-uss-vidya-fcs-5625-b-hallways-11.jpg

Last but not least - turning around to look back where you came from you can see the cargo bay as well as the Quartermaster's office.

=============================================================

The tour is now finished, please throw away your 3D glasses in their proper receptacles as you exit the vessel.

LAST NOTES:

This is an ongoing project and doesn't really have an "end in sight". Perhaps when I finally figure out how to get it into Unreal properly? I have it 95% figured out, just some shading issues when baking lighting in Unreal. Unreal is currently a mystery to me and I am only just starting to dabble in it and don't know really what I'm doing. Though I believe I have it game engine ready (minus a tweak or two) on Blender's side of things.

Until then, keep an eye out for more on this project. I have a 360 degree panoramic which I'll link to soon so everyone can get a better look.

Keep Trek'n!

Hello everyone! Long time no post for me. However, the other day I really got an itch to work on some new starship designs.

I wanted to do something a little different and kind of venture into an era of Star Trek that is currently pretty much unexplored. I also wanted to show some love to a little known ship, the USS Ibn Sina, that I wanted to see brought back.

ALERT - INCOMING HEAD CANON!

I figured that some time after the events of Picard the Ibn Sina was brought back and gained popularity during the 8 year missions of the Ibn Sina A. By the mid 26th century, the Ibn Sina E became the latest ship to carry the name.

I ended up designing a mid 26th century ship that leans just a little towards the designs we saw in the 32nd century (according to Discovery).

So these are all still very much work in progress, but it is far enough along I thought I'd drop some photos of the current stage of things.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So here we are on the doctors side of things. The unfinished door in the distance would lead to a lobby of sorts. This current view is in a hallway that leads deeper into medical ward 7.

robert-mcnatt-0016.jpg

The reason for the lighting is due to this being late evening on the ship, around 2100 hours, so the lights have been dimmed. During normal hours of operation the lighting is a typical true white.

Another angle of a doctor/nurse station. These stations are for basic level operations such as, scheduling, patient file review, medical discovery databases, quick sample analysis, etc. There are dozens of these stations scattered throughout the entire medical facility.

robert-mcnatt-0015a.jpg

A close-up of one of the analyzing devices. Have yet to make up a story for what this thing does but it basically (insert star trek technobabble here).

robert-mcnatt-0015b.jpg

And closer still......

robert-mcnatt-0015c.jpg

These areas on the walls are ambient holofields. The black panel is a holographic LCARS panel (with custom LCARS coming soon). I figured these holo areas could be used to display a variety of information from 3D scans of patients to semi-3d face to face communication with other doctors, and even hard surface items such as the LCARS panel itself.

robert-mcnatt-0015d.jpg

Just a roll around medical looking thingy a futuristic doctor might have. The black screen can be removed from the cabinet and laid flat, etc. The square framed thing in the middle is more akin to a PADD that can work in tandem with the main screen. When in this configuration the PADD actually sits through the LCARS screen into its own cubby. (Hard to see how this works in this photo though).

robert-mcnatt-0015e.jpg

And one last little medical roll around thingy. Little drawers that open and light up, lockable, etc.

robert-mcnatt-0016a.jpg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is what I have so far - I made this over the last 2 days on a Blender bender - my eyes hurt now. I've got a lot more to add. So many more lights and textures, etc. Lots of details still to add as well. Not even
sure what I'm going to do with some of it. And the door at the end - not sure if I like it. I think it needs to be
a little wider maybe? Anyway....

Thanks for looking! Later everyone.

Update to the Ibn Sina E project. A while back I got the desire to try my hand at creating a completely custom LCARS layout from scratch. After awhile I let the project go as it was pretty time-consuming.

However - since this project will very much be in need of some unique and different LCARS I decided to pop in the LCARS I was working on. I gotta say - it's looking pretty good.

The LCARS below are still very much a WIP - but it is far enough along that I wanted to let everyone take a look - and I needed to see how the custom color scheme looked in the room.

(This image is 4k so zooming in should give you a semi-readable view. The black and white parts of the LCARS are the WIP parts that are being colorized and redone from another LCARS station I made.)

(Everything for the LCARS is custom for this medical panel)

The custom color palette is based on 29th-century LCARS but with variations on color temperature and a couple of new colors added.

If anyone has any ideas for some technobabble or some sort of online display that could fill that empty window area left of center on the LCARS - feel free to drop some ideas.

And with that - until next time.

Another little update:

Made some changes to the lighting and added some details (like the vents in the lower left of the wall inset, etc). I also added some tech to the table on the right.

robert-mcnatt-0023.jpg

robert-mcnatt-tripadds.jpg

That PADD looking thing is my solution to the merger of a Tricorder and a Padd. Until I find a better name - I call it the Tri-PADD.

It can be opened and closed, as seen above.

Alright, more later. :)

Another little update as I inch along on this project!

List of updates:

  • Added some polished silver insets into the structural support beams with the inset lighting.
  • Added some additional emergency lighting into the overhead lighting recess.
  • Added a doctor's chair to the table.
  • Created LCARS for the TriPADDS.
  • Added a shelf to the back left roll around medical thingy with the screen on it.
  • Started working on the door leading out to the main nurse's station.
  • tweaked the lighting ever so lightly.
  • adjusted the sheen of the floor to be a little more dull.

Details of TriPADDs:

I'm not sure I like the door at the end of the hallway. Originally I was going to go for a circular glass inset (think Ten Forward like door). I'm just not sure.

As always - More to come!

I'm starting a YouTube channel just for my digital work (graphics design, 3D modeling, etc)

The first video up is a time-lapse (part 1) of what I have done so far with this section of Ibn Sina's Sickbay.

If anyone is into the process of how this stuff is created - this video might interest you.

I really wish I had done something like this when building my models. Awesome.

Oh, that’s SO cool! I love seeing progress videos like these. Makes one appreciate the design even more. Thanks for posting this!

Love the TriPADD prop, by the way!

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the extendable bit was tacky and cheesy (feels like it could be a little bit of an overused sci-fi idea.) ::shrugs::

Its really fun imagining more advanced versions of the tech we all know from the shows.

Just a little sneak peek at some things going on, quite literally, behind the camera. You usually don't see this view, but I've slowly been fleshing out some designs for deeper into the ward itself.

For clarity - what you are seeing is a grey void of nothingness beyond the hallway and above the ceiling, to the left in that hallway is a door, with more gray nothingness, that has yet to have the interior lights for the door frame lit up.

I'm not sure what will be in that room. I am going back and forth between a simple storage room, or perhaps even a simple small lounge-type room - maybe just large enough for 2 or 3 nurses to sit at a table, with a replicator in the wall.

I'm researching actual medical ward layouts to design the look for this section. Some wards for large facilities (such as this one) even have a living room area for long-term patients. This ward is for infectious diseases, some of which are terminal, so there would be long-term patients in this area who would need some sort of "living space" areas. But these would be further away from this part of the hallway.

I'm thinking beyond the end of this hallway, where it is gray, will be a large multi-room isolation where patients who are being quarantined would be.

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-2-000.jpg

Another update: this time on some expanded parts of the set - a small examination room.

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-3-006png.jpg

Obviously - still a WIP - but this is the general look and feel. The biobed is only have textured. (I'm thinking of going with a deep plum colored cushion top and pillow). There is also another Holowall for showing additional patient information. A little medical computer off to the right there, same as the one in the hallway.

Speaking of hallway...

=================

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-3-009png.jpg

A little perspective. It's just a little room right around the corner from one of the entrances to ward 7. It is dark because I have yet to install any lighting in this hallway intersection, still figuring out a look.

=================

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-3-007png.jpg

Stepping into the examination room. There is a lot of technological gadget stuff to add. I'm incorporating some more holowall tech into the biobed itself.

Oh and to explain the Biobed - The LCARS black panel hides all the bio scanners, etc that analyze the patient. The doctor/nurse can stand at the end of the biobed, facing to the left, and interact with the patient via the Biobed by using the LCARS that swoops down to form a screen and keyboard-like area.

The Biobed is still a WIP as well.

Alright, onward.

=================

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-3-008png.jpg

Looking back out into the hallway, again, so dark because no lighting yet.

=================

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-2-003.jpg

The door to the left is where the examination room is. This hallway leads from one side of the ward to the other. I'm still working on what I'll be putting down in these areas, but I've got some ideas for a mass isolation ward for quarantined patients, private hospital rooms for patients, etc..

And thats all I've got so far. I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Another little update:

What are we looking at? The first of the two renders shows one of the main cross hallways that joins one side of ward 7 with the other. The second is another view inside exam room 1

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-2-006.jpg

Still have a little lighting to put into the ceiling, to the left is exam room 1.

robert-mcnatt-static-cam-3-010.jpg

Another look inside the exam room - starting to get a little fleshed out. I'm liking the direction of this room - very happy with the architecture.

Some more time-lapse vids will be coming later this week - possibly even a sneak-peak at the isolation section of the ward.

I hope everyone is enjoying their day!
