It's rather useless, but it gave me a chuckle.

In honor of a certain item of apparel the Doctor wears in The Big Bang (if you missed that spoiler warning, now's your chance to bail out), a Facebook campaign has been launched to...

...bring back the fez!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign-to-Bring-Back-the-Fez-in-Doctor-Who-Series-6/139955422685441

I might join. That fez was pretty cool. And if Character Options doesn't have one out by Halloween I'll be very surprised! :p

Alex

PS. I know this is probably a couple weeks old. So sue me. I'm in North America and after stumbling across one spoiler too many for the finale I ended up watching them via magic spell I learned in some Alistair Crowley book...

Totally joined that too...Bow ties really do not work for me at all, but maybe fezzes will...

If I were on Facebook, I'd join.

Wondering if we should start an avatars with Fez's thing here. Fez's are cooler than sombraro's any day. :p

The fez is fine as a one-off joke about how bad the Eleventh Doctor's fashion sense is. But the fezzes would quickly be up there with Colin Baker's suit as an example of people with bad fashion sense hurting the entire program if brought back.

Damn straight! May the fez revolution begin!

That's a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think?

No. No, I don't. I think the idea of the Doctor permanently wearing fezzes is a prime example of the sort of bad taste in basic aesthetics that far too often alienates general audiences from science fiction and fantasy and creates the negative stereotypes that genre fans have to deal with.

Give Smith a hat by all means (a nice fedora methinks) but dear God don't let the fez be anything beyond a one episode joke.

Actually scratch that, I'm happy for it to be revisited in a joky manner from time to time, but that's all!

Doctor "Oh look Morocco!"

Amy "You're not having a fez!"

Holy shit. A fez would be perfectly inline with the over all vibe this show has had since 2005. It's a fun, adventure show....emphasis on FUN. The Doctor has always been an eccentric, with clothing to match.

Seriously, the Doctor makes an advanced scanning device out of throwaway crap and you think a fez will turn people off? No, the simple fact is that it wont. Because this isn't a show that takes itself too seriously....not since it came back. nuWho is best described as sci-fi for people that don't care for sci-fi, that's one of the reasons for it's success.

It doesn't get bogged down by continuity, or technobabble, and will readily chuck either if it feels that it will get bogged down with it. Timey-wimey anyone?

And it can do this because this isn't thirty five years ago, when there was little sci-fi in media outside books and sci-fi fans were desperate to show people how respectable it could be. Sci-fi is in the mainstream now, as evidenced by the plethora of tv shows and movies with sci-fi hooks. And there's room for stuff other than shows about stodgy starship crews running around in their pajamas.

Woah, slow down everyone. The fez was a joke. Surely no one actually thinks he should actually wear one all the time. That would be very silly.

Personally, I think the Doctor should get the chameleon circuit fixed just long enough to turn the TARDIS into a giant fez...

Even better, they could go back and retroactively change the TARDIS in all of series 5 to a giant fez...although it would necessitate a change in dialogue in The Eleventh Hour:

(Upon seeing the Doctor pop out of a giant, overturned fez in the garden)

Amelia: Are you a Shriner?

Doctor: Why? Did you call a Shriner?

This would of course open up the door for the Whomobile to return...as a miniature sports car...

The Doctor Who Confidential has Beth Willis stating that they had to destroy the fez otherwise Matt was going to insist on keeping it. Some folks seem to be taking that seriously, even though it's just an example of dry UK humor.

Then again, research some of the ideas that were seriously considered for the Eleventh Doctor and you never know.

All I know is Matt Smith rocked the fez, and it frankly wouldn't have been any sillier than the hat McCoy wore or that monstrosity that Patrick Troughton wore early on before it was decided he'd go hatless.

Nonetheless, the "fezzes are cool" and "I can buy a fez" scenes are some of the best moments not only of the season, but the revival. I'm fine with it being a one-off! ;)
