"You're going the wrong way!"

Those 5 words were all it took to add a little excitement to my day. Here's what happened.

My girlfriend I were driving through a shopping center parking lot in an aisle that is a one-way lane, clearly denoted with arrows on the pavement. As we're approaching the corner to turn right, another car turns down the aisle, going the wrong way. He would have hit me head on had I not seen him coming and maneuvered out of the way. I was annoyed, but not angry. I've had it happen to me a few times in that same lot. As the guy passed me I simply mouthed "You're going the wrong way!" through my closed window. I shook my head at his lack of awareness and went on my way. Or so I thought.

My girlfriend then notices the guy kept staring at us as we passed. I didn't think much of it. I pulled into a parking spot and that's when I see the guy turn his car around, drive over and stop right in front of where I was parked. He starts yelling at me through his open window, telling me to get out of the car, and generally egging me on to get out and fight him.

Since I have more than an ounce of sense, I stayed in the car. He then gets out of the car, and approaches my window, shouting obscenities and threats as he comes. I told him to get back in his car, and something along the lines of "You were going the wrong way, you idiot!" mostly because I couldn't believe somebody would be so enraged over such a minor act of pointing out his mistake. He keeps demanding that I get out of the car...

...and then punches my window. It didn't break, but it seemed like he hit it with pretty decent force. He then walks away and says "I'm going to kill you!"

I couldn't believe it. I was feeling a mix of shock and anger. Shock that someone would get so pissed off over basically nothing, and anger that the fucker just hit my car and threatened my life.

I called local PD, and watched as the guy drove off...and parked back over where everything started...and walked into the pizza shop. I gave the police a run down of what happened, a description of my car, his car and his plate number and parked over nearby. The guy came out of the pizza place and proceeded to chat with a friend, smoke a cigarette and basically act like nothing had happened.

As the police arrive, the dude starts walking back into the pizza shop. I got out, pointed to the guy and let the cop know "that's him" The officer called the guy over and asked for us to explain what happened, one at a time, no interruptions. I recount the story to exact detail. The officer then asks for the guy's side of it...he says "pretty much that...except I didn't punch his window. There's no way you can prove that." In a way, its too bad the window didn't break because then I'd have some pretty damning evidence that he did in fact punch the car. However, either Honda glass is strong or this guy has a weak ass punch... The guy then pulls the innocence card by saying "I'm just a teenager, you're a grown ass man" as if that has *anything* to do with what happened.

Long story short, since there was no damage and the cop took no effort to confer with the numerous witnesses who saw everything (even after I pointed this fact out to the officer) the guy got to go back to work (he works AT the pizza shop). The officer totally belittled the situation, making it out to be more about me pointing out that the guy drove the wrong way over the fact that he assaulted my property and threatened my life. He told me that even he sometimes drives the wrong way down the lane, and its just something that happens. He seemed to have no concern over whether or not the guy really did make threats and hit my car and I was made to feel like I wasted his time by calling. He then told me that people make mistakes and sometimes you should just let it go...

Now I have half a mind to call the pizza shop and complain about the guy. I don't know his name but I know what he drives, and that he has a sore punching hand. I'm not sure what good it would do, but it would make me feel like *something* was done about this jackass.

Anyway, did I do the right thing? Was is unnecessary to call the cops as the officer seems to have thought, or did the cop totally drop the ball on it?

I would not have called the cops, but as the guy was standing next to my car, I may have driven a little bit in order to run over his foot.

If you're going to say that phrase, you have to try and sound like Sean Connery.

OMG. I can not BELIEVE that the cop just blew it off! The kid threatened your life AND punched your window for fucks sake!

I think that calling the cops was absolutely the right thing to do. Did you get the cops name and badge number? I think I personally would call his superior officer and report the incident to them.

As far as that kid goes I really don't think calling his work would do much good. He works at a pizza place, it's not like he is an executive in a big company the holds high regard for customer service.

Well, look at it this way. At least after you said he didn't drive his car between two semi-trucks. ;)

I say you did the right thing, threatening your life and punching your window are both "illegal" in minor respects and the officer should've taken the issue a bit more seriously, you and your girlfriend should've beem sufficent witnesses to what "really" happened.

As for the window not breaking, glass by itself is surprisingly strong and tempered auto safety-glass is stronger. Even if he punched it really hard it's not likely the glass would've broken. It may be possible he didn't realize he punched the glass either he thought he punched air or in the heat of being angry it just happened and he simply didn't remember doing it.

I'd drop the issue and not call the pizza shop however. I would, however, consider calling the department the police officer works for and letting them know how he shrugged off the incident. Now, granted, the parking lot is private property so him going the wrong way down the lane isn't enforcable the cop shouldn't have shrugged that off with a "I do it too" either.

The other guy is a clown and, apparently, a teenager so let is boiling hormones have their day. Shrug it off and make love to your girlfriend tonight, he can have his one-hitter and his palm.

he'll get hit by the Karma Train sooner or later

I've applied to be the Engineer of the Karma Train.

I've been in a similar situation. I was told that the police have no power to act upon threats they did not observe. Makes sense, really. It's that innocent until proven guilty thing.

As to the car window, he would have broken multiple bones if he had punched it hard enough to break it.

You big puss.

There was this old man in England who asked his neighbor to help him move his motorcycle. The neighbor said he was busy...could they do it another day? So because of that the old man framed his neighbor for attempted murder.

Now that's a man who knows how to get things done.

Why can't you be more like him? I suggest a dead body in the teen's trunk + another call to the cops.

Well I do know where he works...I could make his life very difficult for him if I cared to.

I just still can't get over how ridiculous it was. I've done my share of flipping people off in traffic and have yet to piss anyone off this much with even that sort of gesture. For him to lose his shit like that over me pointing out that he was driving the wrong way...dude needs some help.

And the cop belittling it all by saying that he too has driven the wrong way himself...? I couldn't believe that. Sadly, I failed to get his name or badge number. One of those things to remember the next time some batshit crazy kid starts beating on my car.

I'd hire this guy to pay him a visit. Maybe a bit harsh, but I cannot STAND people who get defensive and pissy and belligerent when people point out to them something they are doing wrong.:klingon:

He may have not understood what you mouthing to him...and misunderstood what was going on. Even if he did...you don't know what kind of issues people have and just mouthing and or even yelling at someone you don't know is not a smart move. I have been in near misses and hit twice and never got angry with the people. I think this kid got heated and then cooled down and when the cop got involved...realized how foolish he was and tried to get out of it. If he had broke your window...then the cop would have had more to go on...blowing it off though is odd. At this point just let it go.

I don't really care what he thought I was mouthing. Even if some random guy I'm passing on the road mouthed something that looked like he was insulting my mother, grandmother and my second cousin...I still wouldn't have gotten out of the car, demanded he get out and fight me, punch his vehicle then tell him I'm going to kill him. Even then it would be an overreaction.

Lol, I think in the real world Stallone is looking at some serious jail time for this. ;)

and @ Flux Capacitor: Yes, calling the cops was alright, and yes the cop sounds like he was a douche but now there's nothing more you can do. It's time to just let it go.

Of course you wouldn't but you don't know what is going on with someone else...and of course this kid overreacted & did a horrible and illegal thing which is why I said it is odd the cop blew this off...I am not defending him. You should just be careful in the future...next guy you mouth to could pull a gun on you.

I would have taken out my camera, switched to video mode and recorded the whole thing.

If you call his department/dispatch they should have a record of who responded to the call.
