'Gilligan's Island' Heads to the Big Screen

The seven castaways of "Gilligan's Island" have found a home at Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment.

The studio and production company have begun development on a feature film based on the iconic CBS sitcom, which generated solid ratings during its three seasons between 1964 and 1967 and then found something close to eternal life in syndication.

Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are onboard to produce for Atlas, with Brad Copeland penning the screenplay. Original show producer Sherwood Schwartz is aboard to exec produce along with son Lloyd Schwartz.
Plans are for a contempo take on the well-known premise and characters, with the studio and the Schwartzes' blessing Copeland's initial idea for the screenplay. Roven told Daily Variety that he's hoping to start production as early as next year but won't move forward on seeking a director or cast until Copeland's script is completed.

Schwartz mentioned Michael Cera in an interview last year.

This is going to be fantastic. Can't wait to see NuGillian try to "tweet" his way off the island.

Blasphemy. That Michael Cera is okay, I suppose, but far from L-O-L funny. He portrays the same old drab character in his movies. "Duuuh, look at me, I'm a boring geek" or "I'm a pathetic virgin." That act gets old after awhile, just like Jim Carrey.

A generation ago this would have involved Rick Moranis in the woodpile somewhere. Thank god for small favors.

Before Chris Farley died, wasn't this supposed to be a movie with Farley and Adam Sandler?

I wonder what their take on it will be. A true reimagining, like Will Ferrell tried with Land of the Lost, or a parody of the original show like the Brady Bunch movies were. Or worst of all, a meta-referential mess like Bewitched, with Gilligan's Island actors or conventioneers somehow managing to live the show in the process.

The chances of this being good are pretty slim, IMO.

David Duchovny as the Professor.

Beyonce as Ginger.

Michael Chiklis as the Skipper.

Anna Faris as Mary Ann.

Mr. and Mr. Howell . . . okay, I got nothing.

This'll be an action-packed, ass-kicking Gilligan's Island about a stranded Navy ship with Matt Damon as Gilligan, Russell Crowe as the Skipper, Pierce Brosnan as Roy and Angelina Jolie as Ginger who is an actress studying to take on a military movie role. And in the first five minutes, they play homage to Lost by destroying the smoke monster with pure firepower.

^ No, he said "Mr. and Mr." Howell.

I vote for Ben Kingsley and Patrick Stewart.

:D

Beyonce as Ginger definitely works.

Brian Dennehy is always the obvious Skipper...

I dunno...Bill Murray as Mr Howell? I've seen Leslie Nielsen suggested.

Hmm I could see Leslie Nielsen... he's got that sort of dumb befuddled character quality. As long as they reign him in, not let him get too over board. Although IRL he's actually a pretty straightforward kinda guy. Met my ma during a Great Circus Parade a few year's back. He's actually bowlegged. She was in wardrobe fitting when he visited.

I could see... and don't laugh... Pamela Anderson as Ginger. LOL Really... she's such a ditzy dizzy blonde. Or... or... LINDSAY LOHAN! LOL

There is an actor, and I don't know his name, and I can't remember any role he's played except one, but when I saw this guy, I thought "OMG it's a young Skipper." I thought he would be perfect, but that was probably 30 years ago now or more, so he might not work in the part anymore.

Anyway, the role was a guest star playing "Thor" in the old Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk TV show. I remember watching that show thinking he was a reincarnation of Alan Hale, not just in looks, but in his mannerisms. He seemed like a natural for the part.

Contempo take indeed. :bolian:

And they'll blow up the island.

It will be hard for them to recapture the charm of the original, but it's a good sign that the Schwartz is with them.

I'd have to think about casting, but I'm thinking that the guy who played Chris In The Morning on Northern Exposure would make a great Professor.
