'Gilligan's Island' Heads to the Big Screen

The Professor, at least, should be a bit more realistic in that they should either 1) not have him be some uber-genius who can do things like make a fully functional nuclear reactor out of bamboo shoots and coconut shells but not be able to FIX THE FUCKING BOAT, or 2) Actually *have* him fix the boat. :p

Oh, and they had better keep the theme song. (Fun fact: The Gilligan's Island theme and "Amazing Grace" can be sung to each other's lyrics. Try that. Got that mental image in your head? Good. Now try to sleep tonight. )

There is an actor, and I don't know his name, and I can't remember any role he's played except one, but when I saw this guy, I thought "OMG it's a young Skipper." I thought he would be perfect, but that was probably 30 years ago now or more, so he might not work in the part anymore.

Anyway, the role was a guest star playing "Thor" in the old Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk TV show. I remember watching that show thinking he was a reincarnation of Alan Hale, not just in looks, but in his mannerisms. He seemed like a natural for the part.
Eric Allan Kramer. He's already played the Skipper, sort of. He played Alan Hale, jr in the TV movie Surviving Gilligan's Island.

Bingo. That's him.

And I guess I wasn't the only one who thought he'd make a good Skipper, Alan Hale Jr.

They'll probably try to turn this into a fake reality show.

That's already happened. A few years ago there was a reality show called The Real Gilligan's Island, which pitted two teams against each other, each one with a real first mate, a real skipper, a real millionaire and his wife, a real celebrity sexpot (Erika Eleniak vs. Angie Everhart in the first season, Nicole Eggert vs. Rachel Hunter in the second), a real professor, and a real farm girl. They dressed in replicas of Gilligan's Island costumes and stayed in replicas of the huts. It started out with the two teams competing against each other, with the emphasis within each team being on cooperation and bonding, which wasn't too bad. But then they used eliminations to winnow it down to one of each category, then they combined the survivors into a single set of castaways, and from that point on it was just Survivor in Gilligan's Island costumes, with the emphasis on backstabbing and scheming and treachery, which was awful. And it was blatantly staged. In both seasons, in the very first competition, one team member suffered a dramatic "injury" and had to be eliminated. It was credible once, but doing it two seasons in a row just exposed what a scam it all was. Although I guess people who watch "reality" shows regularly are willing to swallow that stuff, kinda like the people who watch wrestling. Still, it was basically redundant, since it was hardly any different from Survivor, so it didn't last beyond two seasons.

I like this one! Every single casting choice is screwed up in a funny way. :rommie:

. . . I wouldn't mind a little more sexiness than the show was able to get away with, but I don't want to see the intentionally excessive vulgarity that passes for humor in movies today.
But let's hope that when Mary Ann wears those shorts and crop-tops, at least we get to see her belly button.

How about this casting for the Howells:

Joe Morton and Diahann Carroll.
I don't know if Joe Morton could carry off that level of arrogance; he's too likable. On the other hand, you do need somebody who's inherently likable to make the arrogance acceptable.

And how about Summer Glau as Mary Ann. If you don't do as she says, she'll rip your heart out.
She can kill you with her coconut creme pie!

The seven castaways of "Gilligan's Island" have found a home at Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment.

The studio and production company have begun development on a feature film based on the iconic CBS sitcom, which generated solid ratings during its three seasons between 1964 and 1967 and then found something close to eternal life in syndication.

Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are onboard to produce for Atlas, with Brad Copeland penning the screenplay. Original show producer Sherwood Schwartz is aboard to exec produce along with son Lloyd Schwartz.
Plans are for a contempo take on the well-known premise and characters, with the studio and the Schwartzes' blessing Copeland's initial idea for the screenplay. Roven told Daily Variety that he's hoping to start production as early as next year but won't move forward on seeking a director or cast until Copeland's script is completed.

I've got it! Chi McBride ("Winston" on THE HUMAN TARGET) as the Skipper. He's got the right build and he does slow-burning exasperation well.
