Discovery officially renewed for Season 4

How can this be, wasn't this cancelled after the first season and why does Kurtzman still turn up for work when he has been fired like 5 time :nyah:

But this is great news, loved the first episode of the new season so a great time to announce it.

No one's told security, so he keeps turning up and rebuilding the sets personally:D

(Guess they only tell a couple of the cast too as they must be the ones who don't return for the next season:p )

To tell the truth, I thought it had already been officially announced it was renewed, but I'm happy to hear it:)

I wouldn't be surprised if Discovery was already renewed for season 5.

Well, Kurtzman did say in an interview recently that Discovery will go on for as long as they have good stories to tell with that crew. He mentioned that Star Trek series traditionally go 7 seasons but could go longer if they keep having good stories to tell. He seemed to imply that Discovery would last at least 7 seasons

I'm sort of curious what the angry Youtuber crowd are making of this, you know, the same ones who have been predicting Discovery's imminent cancellation any second now, but not curious enough to actually look for myself.
they're congregating on Trekyards probably, making meh sounds to imitate Captain and Enabler

I suspect this may be the only information about Season 4 until Season 3 finishes streaming. Where the Discovery will be in Season 4 could be the ultimate spoiler with only one episode in at this point.

Christ, you're right. He's spent over a decade trying to unsuccessfully kill it. Can't this guy do anything right?
You mean like that universally beloved JJ Trek film series that he co-wrote, which was so successful that it only made 3 movies in over a decade and left ViacomCBS unsure on how to proceed?

Unless something changes; I would expect them to produce STD until it has about 100 episodes (Yes it's a streaming series, but I'm sure CBS still wants syndication options for it on terrestrial TV, and worldwide and other markets years down the road.

At around 13 episodes per season; that would mean it would last about 7 to 8 such seasons total.)

The three Abrams films made a combined 1.2 billion dollars, and the current glut of TV shows would never have happened without them. You have to twist yourself into some interesting shapes to make that out to be a failure.

And how on earth were ViacomCBS "unsure on how to proceed?" They greenlit five Trek TV shows and counting.

Contrary to popular belief, those films were successful and pretty universally praised, once you step outside of the Trek fandom bubbles. I don't even like Into Darkness, but I won't deny it was a hit amongst critics and general audiences.

It's not hyperbolic to say they resuscitated a franchise that until that point had been on life support since Nemesis. Earlier probably. Star Trek 09 is pretty much the reason that 3 of my good friends are into the series nowadays. Trying to downplay these films is silly.

also, one of the reasons they’re having trouble making new Star Trek movies is they can’t decide whether to continue the Kelvin universe, tie them into the prime canon again (and the new TV shows), or do a whole new continuity. When you factor in that it has to make x amount of money to be worth it (blockbusters are quickly becoming the only type of movie to be released in theatres), it’s not an easy decision.

Personally, I'm fine with them renewing the show for a fourth season. I liked what I saw in the season premiere.

I can’t figure out if you’re serious or not...

but Discovery was already renewed a long time ago for season 4, only now it’s officially announced. Its “numbers” have been so good that not only does it keep getting renewed but more and more Star Trek spin-offs keep getting produced. Also, no streaming service ever publicizes the numbers of people who watch their shows. But considering Discovery has one of the highest per episode budgets of any show currently on the air, I’d say it’s doing pretty well for it to still be profitable.
It’s numbers? They released the ratings for the show? I haven’t found anything in its numbers. The only thing I can guess it that it’s one of the few things people are watching on the cbs service. There isn’t much there but Star Trek and a few movies.

I'm not a shill for CBS, much to my chagrin, but there is a lot on CBS-AA now. Star Trek is still its anchor product, and that makes sense. Another sign that they're having success with the strategy. As a service it still has problems. Live TV coverage is atrocious.

Right it’s really the only product they have that people watch. But other services like Netflix have Star Trek. So yeah the highest watched stuff in cbs all access is the newer trek because they are the only ones that have it. But their services is the low on the list of popular services. I rarely use it now because most of their content stinks.
