Watched Trek V tonight

for the first time in awhile and I have to admit now that the campfire scene in the beginning of the movie made me pretty misty eyed now that both Kelley and Nimoy are gone. When Bones says to the two that it’s amazing the time they spend together, I had to reflect the same about how much of my 55 years has been spent with Trek

Funny you should post this as I had plans to watch ST5 this weekend. It's my first time watching since Nimoy passed, and I already figured there will be a tear or two. I was lamenting to myself pretty recently, how time is the fire in which we burn as Soran said in Generations. As more and more of my childhood idols are passing on, I'll always remember Nimoy and Kelley with reverence.

It's still a pile of crap bookended by some great character pieces.

Scrapping the movie and editing the camping scenes together as a bonus feature on the The Voyage Home Bluray would have been the best option.

Personally, I adore the Jack Marshall Fan edit of the movie, which cuts it down to "pilot" length, edits out the terrible parts, keeps the pacing moving, incorporates TOS sound effects and music, cuts the movie into acts (with commercial break pauses).... and it changes the entire feeling of the movie. I've watched the edit more times then I've ever seen the original (and I saw it as a kid at the dollar theater in '89...) ..... unfortunately only a low resolution exists.

Star Trek V might not be great, but it's not horrible. And even with all its flaws it's still a million times better than...

Come on, I know you know the words.

Three little words.

If you really find it unfathomable how someone can't like TFF while liking TOS, I'll be happy to break it down for you...

I agree with the idea that you'd never know the difference though. The movie would seem just like a tv episode filmed in the late '60s for a show that, let's face it, had a not-insignificant cheese factor.

I enjoy TFF because of something as simply as we actually get to see two full-scale shuttlecrafts props and the 1701-A Hangar deck set not just a matte painting with miniatures as we saw in TMP. :luvlove:

STV is a mixed bag, some potential was missed or insufficiently developed despite being on the right track, too much forced comedy did more to ruin the show than the f/x ever could (thank STIV for the insistence of the ha-ha-bonk stuff for the sequels), but I liked the ideas of a planet of galactic peace gone awry, I liked Sybok, the incidental music was often pretty great, the reminder there are Klingons out there that absolutely hate Kirk, trying to get Scotty and Uhura in a relationship, and I liked the "big three" scenes in general. STV is still better than Nemesis, ST2009 and STID (despite its strengths, STV is more exploratory of the galaxy then headin' back to Earth.)

I forgot about that, which is sad as it awe-struck me (in a good way) at the time. And it's the only Kirk-era movie (80s) that relied more on shuttlecraft than transporters. Transporters are often a copout, being forced to use shuttles can add a great sense of threat and urgency (see "The Orville" on some fantastic examples of this trope in use.)

People hate on STV for the Uhura/Scotty romance, but in my own opinion, the compassion shown between them began in the final scene of Star Trek IV, as well.

My only issue with the movie is the cheapness of the sets/effects. The obvious reuse of TNG sets, the model composites, and of course the lift shaft issues.

But the movie itself is perfect Trek. I’d be up for a digital makeover with new effects and virtual sets.

I particularly like this aspect of it. Exploring the unknown, discovering . It feels the most like Star Trek at its purest, and like TOS in particular.

It's interesting to consider William Shatner's more cynical take on Gene Roddenberry's universe. One could also see it as a 1960s man living in a 1980s world and realizing that the optimism of the summer of love hadn't really amounted to the beautiful world every one had envisioned.

Granted, but the set looked too small for how big the Enterprise was. I thought the scale looked more appropriate in TMP in my opinion.

Nemesis is debatable (I happen to love Nemesis) but better than the first two reboot films? Not a chance.

Agree, I think you are correct. TMP 1701-Refit Hangar was proper scale, but they never had to actually built the whole set just a matte painting and miniatures of the shuttlecrafts, workbees etc. TFF 1701-A Hangar set was accurate, but too small, albeit I do applaud Shatner for actually having this set.

I never understood those complaints. TOS was amazing and it looked like, well, TOS. STV always looked fine to me.
