Your life...before Star Trek....

We all had a life before Star Trek. Do you remember what it was like?

I was just reflecting on this. For me it's long, long before the internet and being able to discuss the latest projects and news with people all over the world.

For me it was the 1960s and I wouldn't encounter Star Trek until 1970 when it was already out of production and well into syndicated reruns. The only vague memory I have before that was my mother switching channels (no remote) and she stopped ever so briefly at the scene of an odd looking spaceship orbiting a planet and the next scene of a group of characters in some unusual control room. And it was in b&w.

Before Star Trek for me there was The Adventures Of Superman, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Zorro on The Commander Tom Show broadcast out of Buffalo. There was the Adam West Batman series (I loved that as a 7 year old, but I was a kid so what did I know?) There was also Lost In Space, Land Of The Giants, Time Tunnel, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. There was animated Superman and Batman and other characters, most particularly the animated Spider-Man series. My space adventure of choice then was Space Ghost.

It was also a time when I was just being introduced to comics. I read numerous characters then, but Batman and The Amazing Spider-Man loom most largely in memory of that time. I also recall when DC started to make Batman more serious again--it was like a light went on and I could never look at the Adam West or the animated series the same ever again.

Before Star Trek for me superheroes loomed largest. After finding Star Trek superheroes took a back seat to a different collection of heroes. :)

Anyone else?

I didn't discover Trek until 1971, when I was a young teen. So my whole childhood was Trek-free. I knew about it, of course, but my parents sneered at it and so I really wasn't exposed to it.

Would I have liked it in the late 60s? Given what I watched back then (Time Tunnel, It's About Time, It's About Space, Land of the Giants, Batman, Lost in Space) I think that I would have liked it.

I'm surprised my folks didn't like Trek, as they seemed to watch the other sci-fi-ish shows.

My pre-Trek obsession was The Ninja Turtles. And before that I was into Thundercats and He-Man.

I've known about Star Trek my entire life, but it didn't turn into an obsession until I was nine or ten years old. Around that same time, I started watching I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, Batman, The Adventure of Superman, etc., but Trek dominated the others.

Get this: I was born on 22 Sept. 1966, the same day (according to Memory Alpha) that "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was originally broadcast on NBC "in living color". The show was in reruns as far back as I can remember. Either I was too little to remember a time before the reruns started, or if you go back to when I was a little tyke, the show was being aired for the first time on NBC.

So for me TOS has always been there.

We all had a life before Star Trek.
Not all of us.

I was born during the original series run and my parents found it was one of the few things that they could use to keep me from crying and my earliest drawings were of the Enterprise.

I don't remember a time before Star Trek, it is a constant in my life.

On the other hand, I've had plenty of life that had absolutely nothing to do with Trek in any way. And my interest in it has waxed and waned over the years, with periods where I hardly think about it at all.

So while I love Trek, I long ago realized I wasn't a hard core fan. I've only bought myself The Cage and WNMHGB on tape (late 1990s) and TWoK on DVD (a couple years ago), and got the first season of TOS as a gift from a client about two years ago. In the end the Trek stuff I like the most is the stuff I make myself (and the making of the stuff is half the motivation).

So will I be as interested in Trek next week as I am today? I don't know. The important thing is that I enjoy it. :techman:

I was about 7 when I saw Star Trek for the first time. Before that it was mostly cartoons, comic books and doing stuff kids do at that age. I spent part of that time in Japan, so my options were limited.

Before Star Trek, I didn't have a life.

Come to think of it, I still don't have one. :sigh:

Can't remember a time in my life before Star Trek... Mom started me young. :)

Before Star Trek, my life was a miserable, lonely, depressing place.

Now, it's a miserable, lonely, depressing place with a cool space ship.

We all had a life before Star Trek. Do you remember what it was like?

I was born in 1970, ten months after TOS left NBC, so for me, there was no life before Star Trek.

And to revive an old joke, I guess that means I've never had a life at all.

Count me among those born during the show's original run and always had it on TV. My memories don't go back to before I was 4, and I was watching it even then. So, nope, no life without it.

I don't remember back that far. My dad exposed me to STAR TREK pretty early.

Although I also remember watching THE LONE RANGER and THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN.
