Worf's Hair

So I've seen them all a thousand times, but TNG is new to my partner.

We're watching through chronologically, and we get into season 6 and suddenly Worf's hair has grown longer than he kept it before.

She turns to me and says "Worf's grown his hair longer, eh?"

I said "Yeah, he has."

And then she drops an observation that had me smacking my head wondering why I never thought of it before. "Is that maybe because he's still triggered by scissors? (from Schisms)"

I absolutely love this little bit of character development whether it was intended or not.

Worf's hair grew just a little bit between seasons all along, especially between seasons 4 and 5. But there's this sudden leap of time in the middle of season six where nothing important happens to our heroes for many months, just long enough for Worf's hair to almost double in length. Otherwise his hair grows exceedingly fast, and he must visit Mott every day.

At least its only between seasons. Beverly's and Deanna's hair can vary in length between individual episodes due to both the actresses wearing wigs.
Not to mention how Deanna's hair grew apparently several feet between "Encounter at Farpoint" and "The Naked Now"
Perhaps Klingon and Betazoid hair does grow faster than human hair, or they have some sort of technology that stimulates hair growth.

Maybe the same tincture Quark gave to Morn. :)

Klingons conquer the hair length and style that they desire. It a symbol of honor and bravery of a true warrior. You have not yet seen hair like this. Look, Alexander! And always remember.

I think Michael Dorn lobbied for the longer look because he hated those women's wigs he kept having to wear.

It seems reasonable that they'd be able to artificially stimulate hair to grow quicker.
Or heck, maybe the characters were really wearing wigs.
I'm usually oblivious to these things.
I was watching Dark Shadows with my mom several years ago and she pointed out that Nancy Barrett was wearing a wig and I was devastated. I thought she had the most beautiful hair.

With me it was also my mother who pointed it out. For a while when I was a child years ago my mother, my sister and me were often watching TNG together and my mother kept pointing out that Dr. Crusher's hair kept changing length and then said that she didn't like that they made both their leading actresses wear wigs.

And I was like "Deanna's beautiful hair is fake?"

And she was like "Of course! No human being has that much hair!"

I always marveled at Worf's hair once it got long...he seems to have stripes of color in it. Like, darker and lighter brown? And it is evidently supposed to be natural because he has a greyer version of it in All Good Things.

I guess they just wanted to break up the flat brown-ness of it?

I hate having my illusions destroyed like that lol
I totally thought that Beverly and Troi just had naturally beautiful hair. After my mom pointed out Nancy Barrett's wig I was more aware of those kinds of things. For some reason my mom is obsessed with pointing out production errors and behind the scene details. She won't know the names of any characters of any show or understand the plot, but she'll notice who's wearing a wig or what's wrong with the set design or whatever.

I like to imagine that long hair might be a genetic trait, and they probably really do have to cut it daily to stop it getting out of control. Maybe it came about during their evolution? (Alongside their impressive growth spurt at a young age; cf. Alexander).

My mum's the same. She's always pointing out "Oh, she was pregnant when they filmed this" or whatever, just based on what she sees on the screen, and I'm just like, 'Really?'. She picks up on things I never would have. :)

On Troi's hair, for what it's worth I have read on some Troi/Marina Sirtis fansites that this hairstyle:

Which Troi had for a few episodes in Season 6 (Relics-Rascals) was actually Marina Sirtis' real hair. If that's the case I really don't quite get why they felt they had to put those hair pieces on her, it's really nice hair. Though I wonder if those curls are real (Sirtis being Greek and all) or a perm (it being the 80s and all)

^She had her own hair in the movies, and in other roles since, and it is either naturally much straighter, or she has been straightening it ever since.

Personally, I liked Worfs hair Seasons 3-5 best.

The "turtle shell" really transformed over the years tho. That was not realistic physical change, but just a lot of retooling by the makeup & prosthetic dept.

The use of different wigs is very apparent on Gates McFadden in Season 3 from episode to episode.

But what about Picard's hair? I mean no change at all? He never regrew his hair or shaved it off? What gives? He could have at least shaved his name in the back...

Anyway, when I start balding in a several decades (if ever), I'm going to shave it to look like Patrick Stewart.

I thought this thread title was the name of a punk rock band.

It is something to wonder about, though, because I always thought the Klingons had long hair to reflect the fact that they don't really seem the beauty parlor/day spa set. But having said that, Worf's long hair was always so neatly combed and pulled back it seem to contradict the reason for it to be long, unless he posses for Mr. Data when he's painting. It does seem to be a mystery of the universe.

I do think it looks better than the first season Worf. Maybe it has to do with the age or accomplisments of the individual Klingon, or maybe he has completed a pilgrimage or a right of passage that demands his hair not be short?

I don't think it's canon, but it has been said that Klingons wear their hair long to defy their enemies to grab hold of it and yank them around during hand to hand combat. This is in fact the reason that modern armies require their servicemen and servicewomen to cut their hair short, though I don't think they'll admit it.

Refer Voyager's The Gift:

[the Doctor has restored Seven of Nine's human appearance]
The Doctor: I also took the liberty of stimulating your hair follicles - a vicarious experience for me, as you might imagine.

Picard is shown with lengthier hair in The Inner Light & Future Imperfect

I gotta say... It's not a good look for him, though the Vandyke adds some pizzazz. Given how good the clean shave looks in X-Men, I'm surprised he never opted for it during TNG

I always figured it was either because he's mentioned having times in his life when he was self-conscious about losing his hair, or it might've just been because they were into featuring those pointy The TOS pointy sideburns
