Women without children

Again, you are coming from a different cultural context. Here, a comment like that phrased in that exact way is most likely going to be negative.

Isn't that the conventional lifestyle for Italians? :p
No, most of us actually have style. Kiss and don't tell, you know. ;)

Quando è il processo. Domani, sì?
Nah, it was just a technical hearing. Seven minutes to deal with paperwork, and then the trial was adjourned to the end of May. Unfortunately, in hyper-slow Italian legal system, it's not uncommon to have weeks if not months between hearings. Besides, it's still unclear if the matter will be handled as an ordinary trial or they will need a formal impeachment-style procedure to proceed.

often in American English, telling someone 'Good luck with that' is a sarcastic put-down used when you think that person's about to walk into something stupid, or you want them to fail.

At least, with the right tone of voice it easily and often becomes that. Without being able to hear the tone, it can very easily be mistaken for a jab regardless of what was actually meant.

Except, of course, that's not what he said.

Damn. Considering there literally had to be laws overturned, I suppose the slowness isn't that unreasonable, but I was still looking forward to that starting.

On 'good luck with that'. Never meant it like the poster took it. More kind of 'I support you in your choice, and wish you well with it'.

Mind you, I have heard it said in US movies/TV with a sharp and sarcastic tone. But as I'm not a Namurrican, that was so not my intention.

He kinda reminds me of the mafia boss that everyone knows did something wrong, but everyone also knows he's not going to get convicted for it.

Only a chauvinistic male would say something so utterly stupid as this (unless, of course, the person saying it was Sarah Pallin - she would probably say something this ridiculous too, in her efforts to suck up to the far right). And I'd bet dollars to donuts that this guy would hold his fellow males to a completely different standard that would include some nonsense about men not normally being the primary caregivers, blah, blah, blah.

Bottom line - he's a douchebag who REALLY expects women to 'stay in their place' - translated, 'barefoot and pregnant'...and 'not running for office'. Because if she DID have children, he'd probably be on about how she clearly does not have the time to devote to the office, given that her first responsibility lies with her kids.

What a dickhead.

I think you are wrong.

Mark Latham is in fact, now, a stay-at-home Dad. I believe his wife is a lawyer and she is the one who is working. However Latham has a nice parliamentarian pension to live on so he doesn't really need to work.

I think it's the comments of another ex-Labor leader that may be more relevant to Gillard's immediate future.

What a monumental act of desperation it would be to turn back to Rudd, but, I suppose you should never say never in these extraordinary, turbulent times we live in.

Clearly the only thing Gillard has going for her is that Abbott is the alternative PM. I think she's lost the electorate, but it's hard to see the ALP ditching another sitting PM, particularly with the hung parliament.

Well, Kevin '11 sure thinks it's on. Either that, or he's decided that if he can't be PM, nobody else on his side is going to be.
