Why were they always in their Uniforms?

One of my biggest gripes about Voyager (among many) was the fact that they were always no matter what they were doing in their uniforms. When they were called to the Bridge at 2 am or whatever all of them show up hair in place and in their uniforms or in the heat of a battle or when the ship is getting it's ass handed to it (Year of Hell) all of them are still in their uniforms except for Janeway. Even if it wasn't a battle and they were just going about their daily routines. They should at least only have their undershirts or shirt less (males only it's not that kind of show keep it PG). I mean what is Janeway going to do fire them?

During holodeck time we'd occasionally see them in other attire. And that time the EMH was drawing/painting Seven she was definately out of her clothing.

I remembered a scene in which Paris breaks into Harry's bedroom, to discover he wears a sleeping mask to bed. Upon checking that turns out to be S1 The Cloud. But even in that scene, Harry, either when lying down or sitting up in bed, very tightly keeps the blankets around his neck so we don't get to see what he wore (or didn't wear) in bed .... next shot, they're walking in uniform down the corridor.

Perhaps because of replicator resource scarcity, the Captain ordered them to sleep nude, nightwear being a luxury reserved for the Captain only ? ;)

A good question. SF Debris would be snarking about the tyrannical interstellar dictator Janeway about this time... :P

The replicator only has one pattern available, that of a Starfleet uniform.

OR

The mission to the Badlands in the pilot episode was meant to be just a search and rescue operation. They all packed lightly and didn't bring a lot of personal items (like casual clothing) with them onboard.

If the holodeck could simulate civvies, the replicators could figure out how to make them.

As someone who's worn a naval uniform, I know firsthand it's not healthy to be on the job each and every time you step out of your room indefinitely. Even Sailors on ships underway aren't required to be in uniform at all times.

That's why Bev bought the entire bolt! XD

This is something that I noticed first on TNG. It wasn't just Voyager. It seems like if there was a very bad emergency on either ship, it didn't make sense to take the time to put on a uniform.

Actually in the film Generations, when they were on the holodeck in costume for Worf's promotion, when they are called to the bridge they still have their old fashioned costumes on.

If we didn't know Federation science was still dabbling in nanite technology, we could have assumed a more advanced version of such nano-machines forming their clothing fabrics, being able to switch to 'uniform mode' at the snap of a finger or perhaps even only just a thought.

But in that case we would never have met the Borg in Q Who, as Picard wouldn't have needed to go change his uniform after Gomez spilled chocolate on it :)

Remember Tuvok's nightmare ;)
We never actually got to see anything but the crew's reactions...

Seven was able to replicate a dress or two for dates, and the Doctor designed her biosuits. Naomi wore age-appropriate children's clothing, rather than size XXXXS Starfleet uniforms. The Borg kids were also given age-appropriate kids' clothing, though it looks like Icheb had to wear Wesley's hand-me-down sweaters.

I can see it now: She's about to suggestively suggest something sexy she could have made with it, and Picard remarks, "That's certainly a hideous bolt of cloth. Wherever did you get it?"

Next scene: Crusher gives it to Troi, for her own collection of hideous bolts of cloth (see "The Naked Now" when Tasha is raiding Deanna's closet; very few people in the 24th century have even the faintest good fashion sense).

Only in a blue moon on Voyager would you see the crew in civvies. I remember Kim in one episode. He looked like he was wearing an overstarched 80s suit. With THAT sense of style, I'd rather wear the uniform too. :P

That said, on Voyager the ship's culture may simply have evolved to a lack of civilian attire when off duty. Janeway herself could have preferred to stay in uniform regardless of what she was doing on or off duty, instead focusing on her myriad hairstyle variations (especially in the first couple years, wow) as her form of self-expression. Maybe the crew followed suit, pardoning the pun, and instead just wore their uniforms. Also, with this whole melting pot thing going on with the integration of the Maquis, loosely enforcing a all uniform, all the time policy would help keep the jumpsuits on the newbies and visually keep them more in line.

Of course, I'm sure it was a budgetary thing. Funnily enough, all the Maquis seem have kept their original clothes over the years and defaulted back to their often-raggedy duds even six years later!
