Why was Pike in a wheelchair?

Didn't he recieve a massive dose of radiation, of course if you are referring to Pike from the Star Trek (2009) perhaps it is a temporary situtation.

I was refering to him:

Just lazy, even when he could walk, notice how he slouched in the Captain's Chair?

Poor example for the crew.

This is a topic that belongs into the Trek Movie XI+ subforum, not General Trek Discussion. So, hold on while I move it there.

Which of his organs were hurt.
His nervous system.

Memory Alpha said:
A Centaurian slug was a small parasite-like animal which entered a humanoid host through the mouth, eventually traveling through the body to latch onto the brainstem, where it released a toxin that exposes the host to a substantial and unbearable pain.

In 2258, the Romulan Nero used a Centaurian slug in his interrogation of Captain Christopher Pike...

Whether or not the damage was permanent remains to be seen.

One of the things that really stood out to me about that scene, and made him seem even more heroic, was the fact that Pike seemed to be aware that he had a spinal injury but did not ask Kirk and Spock to be more delicate with him. And he even shot a Romulan, all the while knowing he'd complicate if not even prevent a full recovery.

OTOH, the quick draw and accurate aim demonstrated that his upper limbs weren't affected at all by the injury. Nor was his control of the upper torso because he could accurately turn his head to do surveillance, target acquiring and fire control, apparently without being debilitated by pain.

Would this be indicative of spinal damage? Perhaps it's what happens when you have both spinal damage that paralyzes your lower body, and whatever medication the torturer gave you to intensify the experience?

C'mon, people! Pike was in a wheelchair because of (insert eerie music)...FORESHADOWING!!!

Timo, I had figured that Pike's paralysis was from the waist down, given that he was able to breathe without problems, even before the quick draw. I never said I thought he was headed for being a quadriplegic. But it seems to me that he knew he was risking making the wounds he did have harder to heal by moving around that way, but he did it anyway.

As far as his not feeling pain...that sometimes happens IRL with soldiers in the battlefield, who don't realize until a comrade points it out, or after the battle, that they've been shot or suffered another serious injury. It did seem that Pike realized he was injured, but the adrenaline/endorphin rush probably allowed him to overcome the effects of his injuries long enough to get that shot off.

He slipped and broke his ankle on the way to the academy lecture hall, but refused to miss Kirk's ceremony.

If he were Captain Robau, he would have walked in regardless.

*cue Greenwood's cameo, giving Kirk orders via viewscreen and giving us no hint as to if he's still in the wheelchair or not*

I'm sure they'll have Pike out of the wheelchair if he's in ST XII.

Who knows, they might even have Pike in command of the Enterprise again as well. At the end of XI, Kirk was appointed to command, but only as Pike's relief. If Pike recovers, Kirk may have to vacate...
