Why do you think TNG has a less than... stellar record when it comes to comedy?

A couple of jokey episodes might have worked, as most of TOS's comedic episodes were well-received

I think "The Trouble with Tribbles" and maybe "A Piece of the Action" aside most of them were pretty polarizing also.

I thought I, Mudd was pretty fun and well received.

It wasn't funny for the same reason that Friends wasn't about space-anomalies.

It wasn't what they were going for.

Robin Williams did serious roles too and assuming the script would have been the same with him as Rasmussen I don't think it would have been a comedic episode.

He won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting (a drama).

Robin was a Juilliard-trained actor. That's something many people tend to forget.
