Who was the original chief science officer on Voyager?

thestonedkoala

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Was it Kim? I thought he was only Operations because he didn't seem to be very much into Science. I know Seven filled this role later on in the show but who was originally suppose to be the Chief Science Officer on Voyager?

Since it was only supposed to be a short mission I think Janeway left without a science officer and figured since she had been one once she could fill the position until her mission was over.

TNG never had an official science officer position as part of the main bridge crew. This was the same for VOY and ENT.

Only TOS had one with Spock, and DS9 had with Jadzia from Season 1-6. Of course, when Ezri joined in Season 7 as a counselor, there again was no science officer as one of the main DS9 senior officers.

TNG had Data, who acted as both chief science and chief operations office IIRC. And I believe T'Pol was also acting science officer in addition to being 2nd in command.

I thought T'pol was the Science officer first and then got the XO position (beating out Trip).

The Voyager Science officer was going to be Roy Hinkley. ;)

Ah, that's true. I forgot about that. It's been a while since I saw Enterprise or even read about it.

Data was the science officer of the Enterprise and I believe Janeway is the one for Voyager.

To quote Jadzia Dax: "I'm the science officer, it's my job to have a better idea."

Data was the "idea/theory" guy on TNG as was Janeway on Voy.

Harry Kim is a junior Engineer.

I never considered Janeway the science officer of Voyager. For all we know the designated science officer might have died when Voyager was wisked away to the Delta Quadrant. Seven of Nine never became the "Science" officer, she was stationed in Astrometrics. Astrometrics is a science specialty, but doesn't encompass all the areas of science. As far as I know, they never had a designated science officer, but everyone pitched in to cover. Or, there really was a designated science officer who for some reason never made it onto any shows.... and never did their job as the rest of the senior staff always seemed to.

For some reason, Star Trek hasn't really done the science officer thing. Yes, you had Spock but since then we've only had Jadzia, and we saw her at the helm of the Defiant just as often as we saw her doing science-y stuff. Data filled the role nicely on TNG, but it wasn't his position. For Voyager I guess they felt making Janeway a scientist would do it, but I really think they should've made the Kim character a full-blooded scientist instead of ops.

Data was never Chief Science Officer. He was always addressed as the Operations Officer.

Actually he was both. Memory Alpha states that Data was considered the chief science officer AND he did do a lot of scientific research. AND he graduated with a exobiology minor or whatever they call it.

Yikes, I think Memory Alpha may be wrong here--never once was Data referred to as a "science officer". In fact, I don't think they ever referred to him as "operations officer" (not those exact words, but his station was called Ops so it goes without saying).

The only time we hear Data's position title in this series is when they call him "second officer".

Anybody want to help me out with some quotes, here? :)

TNG 'The Battle' has a quote about Data bein' the second officer of the ship, as does TNG 'Time's Arrow, Part One'.

And "Conundrum"

"Operations Management Officer"

I don't think Data performed dual roles. I believe it was always intended that the Ops manager functioned as department head of all the ship's Sciences departments; after all, what else does Ops mean?

Personnel decisions? First officer. Ship's systems? Chief engineer. Scientific research? Ops.

Think of what the Ops console on the bridge actually does - it controls the ships sensors and functions as the main access to LCARS. What did Data do when he manned the Ops console? He ran the sensors and accessed the computer to perform analysis of the information the sensors collected.

I am pretty sure that Ops was always intended to be the head of the Sciences department.

Now, Voyager was a different matter. The Intrepid class was apparently designed for combat performance (I remember Tom Paris specifically saying that in an episode), so it didn't need a big Sciences department (nor, apparently, a full Stellar Cartography lab like the Galaxy class had, getting instead a smaller Astrometrics lab.)

I got the impression that Harry Kim, as Ops manager of a smaller, non-explorer, non-science ship, WAS the Sciences department of Voyager.

Did we ever find out what Harry's degree was from Starfleet Academy?

Must have been engineering-related, whatever the hell it was, considerin' his alternate career of designin' new runabouts in 'Non Sequitor'.
