Jesus Christ! About 10 pages have been spent on a back and forth about bathroom privileges. Meanwhile, Trump has nominated to his cabinet Jeff Sessions as AG (on-record racist and KKK supporter -- except the part about them smoking weed), Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor (kicked out of the DIA by the Pentagon for being crazy) -- the man who will whisper in Trump's ear about pressing the button, etc....

I appreciate and support the argument for TG rights, but let's just agree to disagree on this and focus on the fact that multiple horrors are on the horizon.

Can't talk about all these things.

The voters might panic.

An openly racist US govt. Whatever next?

Eh, since this forum and discussion will have absolutely no impact on the future of anything, and I have no control over the actual decisions about restrooms and words that rip off Apocolypse Now, I choose to discuss the more entertaining topic of unisex restrooms.

Speaking as a gay man, I'll just say that the whole bathroom situation reminds me of when I was in college in the late '90s and either had to pay more money for a single or room with a man. The theory being, of course, that if men and women shared a room then there might be a risk of sexual assault or what-not. Of course, being that I am gay, a girlfriend and I were tempted to point out that there was far less risk of that occurring if we were allowed to room together.
There's also the argument that a fair number of the student body was at least mildly homophobic. Thank you, college, for forcing me into a situation where I might share my living space with someone who'd like to see me dead.

I don't want him on my side. I don't want anyone who is fine with me being attacked on my side.
I was talking with some other people about this thread and they suggested that I look at things from your perspective, which I will attempt to do, please correct me if I'm wrong:

-You are somebody who is willing to risk potential ridicule, or worse, to use the women's restroom.
-You may have had to put up with people being against you and they were mean about it.
-You probably see people in the (mostly right-wing) media say that you are wrong for your views.

Taking these factors into consideration, I can see why you may be kind of uneasy about my views on this topic.

However, I think that I should clarify them to you, since it seems that you don't understand what I said:
-I support Transgender people going into the bathroom of their chosen gender.
-I think that some people abuse this to be in the same area as the opposite gender.
-This is why I support unisex bathrooms. However, they would be large and would support large amounts of people and would be for any person of any gender (biological or how they identify). Restrooms for only men and only women will remain, perhaps in smaller sizes, for people who don't really want the opposite sex in the same bathroom. I think that this is a compromise that works for both sides.

I send my son to a college which has a gender-neutral dorm room policy. That means anyone may apply to room with any gender. The college only recommends, but not requires, that it not be because of a romantic situation. I hope that real life like this spreads to all institutions.

Like I said, this was back in the late '90s. I'd certainly hope most colleges have developed more flexible policies. Glad to hear your son is attending one of them.

For the record, if "some people in this country agree with me" were a litmus test for the validity of an idea then NAMBLA would be an organization with power and influence. Just because some people in a nation of more than 300 million think keeping all transgender individuals out of women's restrooms is a good idea doesn't mean it is. A significant number of people think Survivor is good television but I sure as hell wouldn't want to make their standard the nationally-accepted and -enforced one.

At the request of the admin (who is conservative, so I don't want to see any MA threads about the liberal mod shutting down conservative thought) I have been told to close down this thread due to the heated nature of the discussion, and been told to suggest that people visit TNZ to talk about such issues in one of the several US politics threads there instead. This is not to say that political issues are not allowed to be discussed in Misc. at all, but the extreme nature of this discussion makes it better suited for an environment with fewer rules. Thank you.
