In “Hide and Q” (TNG), somebody’s taking target practice. Worf, not knowing whence came the shot, jumps out into the field of fire, starts looking around while pointing his phaser randomly, and shouts, “Drop your weapons!” Geordi complements him on “coming out of nowhere” and Worf boasts about a warrior instinct. Of course if it were a hostile firing and Worf didn’t have plot armor, he’d be dead.
TNG got better at this over the years. Fast forward to “The 37’s.”
The truck backfires. Everyone gets scared and ducks for cover… except Tuvok, who whips out his phaser and looks around; only after he has aimed the phaser at every point in the cargo bay is he satisfied that there is no enemy aiming a gun at him.
I realize the scene is played for comedy, but are we supposed to be laughing at how terrible Tuvok is at his job?
Then there’s this guy, with his arms folded while holding a phaser:
Not quite “Please kill me” like Worf and Tuvok (and a lot of fellow red shirts), but really…
