What's the point in ordering a hamburger steak?

Other considerations: Is it the cheapest item on the menu? A pattie is going to be a lot cheaper than - say - a scotch fillet. Does your restaurant attract a lower socioeconomic clientele?

I worked in such an environment, and those few additional dollars could make a difference.

Actually it is. On the menu, the filet says "market price." I get asked what the "market price" is, then they scoff and say "Just give me the chopped steak."

I've seen it called Chopped Steak around here. Waffle House used to have a pretty good one then they took it off the menu.

And Kestra, if you're in Illinois, you must just not have been looking, or didn't know that a Chopped Sirloin Steak is the same thing - because there probably isn't a Western Sizzlin or Ryan's or Golden Corral or similar all across the country that doesn't offer a hamburger steak, and many locally owned restaurants offer them, too..

Well no, I haven't been particularly looking for hamburger steaks but if it's known regionally as a chopped sirloin steak, that sounds more like something I might have seen on a menu. Then again, I've never eaten at Golden Corral and I haven't heard of the other two places you mentioned.

Considering meatballs aren't really all that different from hamburger patties, or hamburger steaks (*hides from Italian cuisine aficionados*) ... it's all a matter of preparation and presentation ... and budget, really. I love me some cheeseburgers, but get rid of the bun and cheese and ketchup, and douse it in gravy or au jus? That sounds pretty damn appetizing to me (even moreso than pasta and marinara sauce). Not enough to put me off from a filet mignon, if I'm going to a steakhouse. But if I don't have the money for a filet, I'd go with the ground beef steak over just about anything else.

Not all hamburger patties are the same. The ones you get at places like McDonald's and BK are indeed cheap crap, but I've also had burgers that were as good as any steak (chopped or otherwise). So you can't dismiss all hamburgers as cheap, because they're not.

That being said, most of the 'chopped steak' I've had, wasn't burger-like - it was still recognizable as steak, just of a different consistency.

"I'll have a steak sandwich...and a steak sandwich." - Irwin Fletcher :D

This thread reminds me...

In a biography of Lee Iacocca, he told the story that whichever Ford it was who ran the Ford motor company, when he worked there, would prefer a cheese burger for lunch while all the other execs would be eating steaks... and that he would complain that whereever else he ordered a cheeseburger it would be no good.

Investigating, Iacocca found that the burger served in the executive lounge, unknown to the big boss himself, was a ground up sirloin steak...

I don't think I've ever heard of hamburger steak. I can see someone wanting to order a hamburger without the bun, but I don't think I've ever seen this as a separate thing on a menu. I'm in Illinois, just for reference.
Same here in Bavaria. We have totally different words for steak and meat patty and therefore in a steakhouse over here you'd never get the latter.

Over here the definition of steak is a thick slice of meat - usually beef but occasionally pork, lamb, salmon or even tuna - that's not completely fried through. (If it were, it'd be a Schnitzel).
As a meat patty is never served raw on the inside, for fear of salmonella, nobody here would dream of calling it a steak and therefore we wouldn't expect it on a steakhouse's menu either. (It'd be considered kindof off-topic).

Why yours is called "hamburger steak" is beyond me. From your description it's an ordinary meat patty, so why not name it correctly?

Along with Kestra and RoJoHen, I am also an Iliinisian, and I think the confusion lies in the penchant for some trying to be fancy and using "Steak" to jazz up the name of a "Hamburger"...Triumphant is correct about "chopped sirloin steak" and the finer dining establishments he lists...if you saw Marge at the buffet in Fargo, you are there!...

...a Steak is a Steak, and a hamburger is a hamburger...

How 'bout Ground Up Cow Muscle?

Your Ground Up Cow Muscle is mushed together and fried!

Ugh. The menu at my restaurant says something like, "Local cows are hand-picked and slaughtered to bring you fresh tasting hamburgers made with quality beef."

We saw the drafts, and I made a comment like, "So...do we like the word 'slaughtered' in this sentence?"

To which my boss replied, "Well, I already sent this to the printers, so yes." :wtf:

"Howdy!...welcome tuh Slaughter Sity...kin I take yer order."

"Yes, I'd like the Hand-Slaughtered Double Meat Patty with extra Death Sauce..."

...mmm-mmm...them's good eatin'...!!! ;)

Technically, it's ground-up steer muscle.

This guy likes it.

Slightly off-topic but I think Kaine needs help and encouragement:
I can't eat bread anymore.
I'm getting tested for Ciliac Disease.
No Pasta either. Has to be Gluten Free now.
No Sodas either.
Pringles and Pretzels are out too...
:'(
There are alternatives, Kaine. Don't despair :)
Try real potato crisps instead of the Pringles. Just thinly sliced and deep fried potato with salt and paprica. Yummy stuff and no flour in it! (and no artificial aroma, preservation stuff, rising agent and all the other hemical stuff they put into Pringles & Co. Give it a try, you'll see that the real thing is so much tastier!!)
Switch to rice noodles if you're a pasta fan. No glutene either.
Sodas?? I don't get why you can't drink them. They don't contain anything cereal at all.
You could substitute the pretzels with something crispy baked from rice or corn flour. No Gluten in either of them.

Gluten is only in products made from wheat, rye, oats and barley. However, the latter two are so low in Gluten that most people are able to eat them, even if they are Gluten-sensitive.
Just switch to rice, corn, millet, quinoa, amaranth and fagopyrum. They are tasty, totally gluten-free and you can bake and cook with them just as well.
If you like Ethiopian food, you surely have eaten Injera-bread - it's made from millet. Tasty, isn't it? =) And Russian Plini (a sort of thick pancake) are traditionally made of fagopyrum. Quite yummy stuff! A sweet rice soufflee can easily substitute a cake and the Mexican cuisine knows plenty of delicious cookies made from corn flour (my favourites are Molletes).

Someone mentioned a steak-sandwich or a steak-Hamburger. I've never seen them in the US but in my own country we have both. They are simply a Hamburger or sandwich made with a steak. Not minced but an ordinary slice of fried beef. A quite popular dish at BBQs.
