What behind-the-scenes detail(s) do you remember being particularly interesting or surprising to learn?

They literally all thought they were being fired the entire 1st season. Patrick Stewart wouldn't even unpack his luggage
Yeah, probably normal for most tv shows if not all. The first couple episodes at least, they all have to know they might not be asked back to make more.

Nothing surprising, but a few years ago I watched the cast at some event (maybe a Comic Con) and as I recall, Frakes told a couple of funny stories.

In one episode some cast is crawling around on a set n the dark in sand and what not, only the studio lot had cats, cats which got onto the set and shit in the sand.

Then he told of how some episode had too much smoke and it was bothering them, but later in the show Stewart directed episodes and there was an episode were he kept asking for more smoke, more smoke.

That post above about how they all thought they were going to be fired, reminds me of the film The Princess Bride. Years back Cary Elwes wrote a book about working on the film, and I was listening to him being interviewed on the Glenn Beck radio program about it and he told that every day
The Princess Bride
, Wallace Shawn thought he was going to be fired. Of course in retrospect Shawn must realize he was not only wrong, but has become one of hte most loved and quotable movie characters of all time.

I think my favorite interesting little fact is that Sir Patrick actually owned the speedos Jean-Luc wears in "Captain's Holiday". He owned them because he bought them since the original speedos they'd had were deemed "inappropriate". So, Sir Patrick bought speedos himself but also made sure to buy them one or two sizes too small so that they were just about as "inappropriate" as the ones they'd had before. Also, I'm saying he owned them because he no longer does - he actually auctioned them off during a meeting of his fan club. What a great peace of merch these must be to own!

Something for a certain poster here ;)

I remember reading that Gates McFadden was asked to audition with a scene from "The Naked Now," so she initially was under the impression that Beverly Crusher was more of a comedic role.

Imagine what "Sub Rosa" could have been if that had been true lol
She apparently picked the role because of that IIRC

All the original concepts for the episodes, particularly "Justice" and "Code of Honor" and most definitely "Conspiracy." Also that they thought about trying to get Leonard Nimoy in as two versions of Spock for the first episode of Season 2.
Data might have been asian. Geordi had enhanced eyes. There were characters called Con and Ops. Macha Hernandez. Leslie Crusher. Stardates were going to be more like the Kelvin timeline's ones.
"Blood and Fire."
That there was an earlier concept for TNG about the Odyssey.
Michael Piller thought about doing a sequel to "A Piece of the Action."
A fourth timeline in "All Good Things..." with Hugh, Sutcliffe, the crew stealing the Enterprise-D from the Starfleet Museum.
Robin Williams guest starring in Season 5.
Chekov story from Season 7.
All the characters in spinoffs that started as TNG characters, ie Ro/Kira, Ro/B'Elanna, and Locarno/Paris.

From the as always forward thinking: Gene Roddenberry's original 1964 StarTrek pitch:

From Next gens concept pitch
wiki said:
Natasha "Tasha" Yar; Inspired by Vasquez in Aliens, the character was initially named "Macha Hernandez" and was the tactical officer of the Enterprise.
Somewhat derivative to use Vazquez as the template, yet would have finally been the first latin/hispanic regular on a Trek bridge.
Took still another decade, three decades after Roddenberry's first pitch, till Voyager's Chakotay (Robert Beltran) character of Native/Central America descent, and B'Elanna Torres Roxann Dawson Caballero (half Klingon), to somewhat finally bear that out.

Though Chakotay was for the most referenced as Native American, and quickly relegated second to Janeway, we have yet to see Roddenberry's actual pitch character of a strong positive identifies as latino male character, as a regular on a Trek Starfleet Ship really come to fruition.
Rios came close as the captain of LA Sirena, though he was quickly pushed aside and his ship given to Seven, then he's conveniently left in the past.
Finally seems they somewhat bizzarely merged the first two unfulfilled pitch ideas, name and position, now repurposed into one new character, Erica Ortega.

So Roddenberry's pitch vision remains unfulfilled.

Oh! And after watching "The Offspring," I looked up the actress who played Lal (Hallie Todd) and realized she went on to play Lizzie McGuire's mom. She's also the daughter of the actress who played Grandma Yetta on "The Nanny" (Ann Morgan Guilbert).

I just feel like that would all make for one hell of a '90s crossover lol

That's one I haven't heard before

And now we have Erica Ortegas on Strange New Worlds.

Hallie was also Blanche's niece in an episode of "The Golden Girls".
