What are considered the best episodes of Supernatural?

* Just for the record first off, I haven't seen any Season 6 yet. So no spoilers please!!!

So from about July to November 2010 I got into Supernatural via DVD, and watched the first 5 seasons over that time. Have to say, it's a great show. But as I didn't really know much about it, and hadn't seen it before, and wanted to always be surprised by what came next, I stayed away from reading anything about the show on the Internet.

Also from watching them all like that a lot of it is kind of a blur in terms of what episode is what. Now I haven't got time to rewatch the whole thing, but I'd like to revisit a few episodes maybe. Basically I just wondered what are considered the best, most popular, fan favourite episodes of Supernatural 1-5?

ie, "Best of Both Worlds", "Yesterday's Enterprise" with TNG, "Hush", "The Body", "OMWF" with Buffy, "Scorpion", "Timeless", with Voyager etc etc

I guess I could just look on some fan pages, but I'd rather ask you fine people

Thanks!!

ps. Also, I still haven't really read too much about the show online, I've watched it and have my opinions and nowadays that does for me. But I have seen in a few places that the character of Bella in Season 3 wasn't too popular.
Wow, people saw this and complained???

She was gooorrrrgeeeousssss!!! Haha, I guess I didn't really mind if she was a bitch, she was amazingly hot!

There's a bunch I like, but to name a couple, for comedy, Tall Tales and for bad ass-ery, All Hell Breaks Loose part 2. Both from Season 2. Oh and season 3's finale, No Rest for the Wicked.

I was always shocked by what people hated, too. I never had a problem with Ruby or Jo, but it seems like a lot of women hated anyone being around their Wincest.

These are my faves don't know about other fans: All A-s or As
The Pilot
Phantom Traveler
Home
Scarecrow
Faith
Something Wicked
Dead Man Blood
Salvation
S1 finale
the S2 premiere
Nightshifter
Roadkill
A Very Supernatural Christmas
What is and Never should be
Jus in Bello
Lazarus Rising
In the Beginning
Its the Great Pumpkin Sam Winchester
After School Special
Death Takes a Holiday
Monster at the End of this Book
Abandon All Hope
My Bloody Valentine
The French Mistake

I'm a guy and I hated Bela because she kept outsmarting the boys and making them look like idiots. Also she shot Sam and the writers treated it like a joke, instead of Dean ending her like he would have if anyone else had done that to his brother.

Bela was the worst character that ever appeared on the show, which is why season 3 ranks at the bottom for me. Beautiful actress but terribly written.

"In My Time of Dying" (john's death) is often listed as one of the finest, if not the finest, episode of the series. It's number 2 on my list. Also, "Lazarus Rising," the premiere of season 4 with the introduction of Castiel is extremely popular. Season 2's "Night Shifter," in which Dean and Sam escaped from the bank and Henricksen was introduced, (written by Ben Edlund) is another top fave. Season 4's "the monster at the end of this book," (introduction of Chuck the prophet), Season 1's finale, "Devil's Trap," and Season 3's finale in which Dean goes to hell score highly with fans, as well as season 3's "Mystery Spot," which is number 5 on my own list.

My choice if I had to pin down one episode as SPN's finest? Season 4's "On the Head of a Pin," the episode in which Dean tortures Alistair at the behest of Uriel. I also adore the comedy episodes like "Monster Movie" and "Changing Channels." I laughed until I cried.

Ehtros--don't go near the online fandom. With the exception of the fine people here, of course :D most of them are stark raving nuts. Arguing over which brother gets more screen time, whether Castiel is replacing Sam, blah blah blah blah blah.....www.supernatural.tv seems to have the most "normal" fans. TWOP is the WORST.

If "the fans" were pinned down to choose one episode, I'd wager the most votes would be cast for "In My Time of Dying."

I'm not really sure how I'd rank them, so I'll just list my top episodes in chronological order:

"Pilot" (Season 1, obvs)
"Faith" (Season 1)
"Devil's Trap" (Season 1)
"In My Time of Dying" (Season 2)
"Nightshifter" (Season 2)
"Born Under a Bad Sign" (Season 2)
"What Is and What Should Never Be" (Season 2)
"A Very Supernatural Christmas" (Season 3)
"Jus in Bello" (Season 3)
"Lazarus Rising" (Season 4)
"In the Beginning" (Season 4)
"Monster Movie" (Season 4)
"On the Head of a Pin" (Season 4)
"The Rapture" (Season 4)
"When the Levee Breaks" (Season 4)
"The End" (Season 5)
"Abandon All Hope..." (Season 5)
"Dark Side of the Moon" (Season 5)
"Weekend at Bobby's" (Season 6)
"The French Mistake" (Season 6)
"The Man Who Would Be King" (Season 6)

The episodes already listed in this thread are very good. I would add all of the Trickster episodes to the list and several I won't mention from season 6.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Swan Song, the Season 5 finale.
I guess the showdown between Lucifer and Michael wasn't as epic as I'd hoped it would, but the moment of Sam fighting back and seeing the montage made it all the while.

Thanks though, I think I'll watch all the season finales, and along the way some of the suggestions you guys have made

"Swan Song" almost made my list, but I was disappointed by the final battle. I know SPN's budget is limited (way more than it should be), but still. The scene you linked to was very well done, though. The episode is definitely high up on my list, but just misses out, I think.

Swan Song was a decent episode but I wouldn't consider it one of the best of the show. The battle was anticlimatic reduced to Sam having a flash of memory and the ensuing love he felt allowed him to regain control-meh.

Oh yeah, just a quick question I had-
Along with Bela, I also "enjoyed" watching Ruby in Season 3, played by Katie Cassidy. For Season 4 they used another actress for Ruby. I know it was part of the plot that she'd switched bodies, but I just wondered if there were any external reasons for it. KC being fired, wanted to leave or something?

They had to let Katie Cassidy go for budgetary reasons. The CW is fond of slashing Supernatural's budget every year, even though it's their best show.

It's a shame, I liked Cassidy's Ruby more than Cortese's. Genevieve Cortese got a lot of grief from the crazier SPN fans, apparently.

I actually liked Bela, too. I thought Lauren Cohan did a fine job performing her. The problem was that she was meant to just be a one-and-done character and the CW wanted to make her recurring, so the writers had to kind of force her into a lot of storylines.

Budget cuts. SPN has had its budget slashed by the CW each year. Cassidy cost too much money. I preferred her version of Ruby, but as we all know, Mr. Padalecki preferred the second version.

Yes, the CW brass insisted on two, new young female characters in season 3. Bela was indeed meant to be a one off with Ruby as the new character. That's why you didn't see Ellen again. The network wanted young, but the fans took to the over 40 crowd as in Bobby and Ellen.

^ Do you mean Jo? She was great in Season 2 (also, hot) but then vanished for Seasons 3 & 4, came back in Season 5 only to get blown up

Similar reasons?
