Were you glad to see Vedek Bareil Antos pass on

Not really- I think he would have been better for Bajor then Winn, and Bajor had already lost Opaka, which wasn't really fair.

After seeing all of those Vedeks in action? Bajor would be better off without Vedeks

It was bad when he was killed off - he was a good foil for Kai Winn, and was probably the best of the three relationships that Kira had. Odo and Kira were two of my favourite characters and I much preferred them before they hooked up.

Bareil dying meant one less face for Bajor, which in the long run turned out to be a bad thing, I think, as there became less and less Bajoran stories.

I agree that it would have been better had they kept him. I was happy to see him go at the time since I didn't like him very much.
However, rewatching the show made me realize that he was actually a pretty good character. He worked well as Winn's counterpart (a voice of reason, essentially), had an 'interesting' link to the past (i.e. Opaka's part in the Kendra massacre) and was indeed Kira's best partner. I think the actor also had pretty good chemistry with Brooks.
It's also sad that his death was kind of silly. The idea was good, but somehow the way they did it just totally fell flat IMHO.
And I could have REALLY done without the awful 'return' in Resurrection...

Wait... does this thread mean the loss to Bajor in general or as a relief to his suffering when he finally died- as he wouldn't have died I don't think if he was treated instead of continuing the negotiations. But he was in a lot of pain... silly question I know, I just wanna make sure I'm at the right angle.

I would have liked for him to have lived. Obviously, Winn needed to win the election for Kai so that she could play her part in what happened later. However, I would have liked for Bareil to have lived and possibly been elected Kai in WYLB....sort of as a last vindication and a sign that Bajor was ending on the right path.

I also think it would have been interesting for him to have actively opposed Kai Winn at various times during the series. He could have, for example, become a spiritual adviser to Sisko once he finally accepted his role as Emissary and opposed Kai Winn that way.

I am intrigued by the Bajoran religion. His romance with Kira doesn't make sense.

The wages of sin is death?

I've never gotten the impression their religious texts forbade fornication the way texts like the Bible do. And I don't feel that religious leaders should have to be alone, and I'm don't think that view is supported by any religious texts here. The Bible says they should be married, for instance, but doesn't demand "singleness." The texts from the Prophets seem to focus more on being loving and forgiving, I don't know that they talk about sexuality... and look how long and under what circumstances it took for that to catch up with Winn. What about Leeta etc?

Stupid Liberal Prophets (heh)

Really, seemingly the more religious the Bajoran the more they screwed like rabbits.

Yes, I was glad to see him pass on. That actor is the epitome of monotone, wooden acting. In fact I cannot help but to think of his uncanny resemblance to a mannequin in every performance he ever gave on DS9.

The Shakaar actor was far better at acting and more charismatic. They shoulda went with him from day 1, and never had Bareil on the show at all.

his character had served his purpose and the show was moving on (Kira and Odo, woooooOOOOOOOOOOooooooo)

in Trek writing, that meant death for poor 'ol Bareil

I never really liked his romance with Kira so there was no loss for me there.

Other than that, what do you do with the guy? Well, you make him Kai or you kill him. And it wouldn't be very dramatically intersting having a sympathetic character as Kai, so I think they made the right call.

I never really liked Bareil, but I never hated him either. I have yet to see his death episode, however, but I don't think I will be very broken up about it.

I think I liked Bareil better than Shakaar, I would have rather seen more of the former... tho there was something odd about his demeanor that I can't put my finger on, gotta give someone props for putting up with Winn calmly...

When Winn became the Kai it was a wtf moment for me. But later on I realized it couldn't happen to a better person.

Here's what I'm talking about; Winn had schemed and plotted for a long time to become Kai only to have Sisko steal her thunder. After Kai Opaka, the next great religious leader of Bajor was Sisko, not Winn. I daresay she probably became the most inconsequential and forgettable Kai in Bajoran history. In a few years Bajorans probably will be saying "Winn who?".

Yep, couldn't happen to a better person.

Robert

I hadn't thought of that... the only major decision she made- the non-aggression pact- that was all about Sisko too! Wow... you're right!

Had the writers known in advance they needed to kill someone off then they should have retained the character of Li Nalas from 2nd season's "The Circle Trilogy" and killed him off instead of Vedek Bareil in "Life Support" (What a terribly written episode...).

When Shakaar replaced Bareil that was a "game changer" for DS9. The actor simply was not available after his 2 guest appearances, so it would have been far better had DS9 retained Bareil instead. Or drop that silly "Life Support" storyline, altogether.
