Stardate 57769.47 (October 8, 2380. 15:03 Federation Standard Starship Time.)
USS Mjolnir
Gamma 400 System, Sector 25712, United Federation of Planets

“How long till we can begin final approach to the Starbase?” Callum asked impatiently as he sat in the Mark Seven captain’s chair as the ship hung in space waiting to begin its final approach to Starbase Twelve.

“Only a few more minutes, sir.” Lieutenant Nerah Antos said from the helm, “We’re waiting for the Bluefin to clear the lane we’ve been assigned for approach.”

“Thank-ye, Lieutenant.” Callum said. Continuing on Callum said, “Commander Rel, send my regards to Captain Akinola on the Bluefin.”

“Aye, sir.” Damrus replied from the XO/Communications Station as he began tapping a series of commands into the console. Moments later Damrus continued on saying, “Bluefin returns the sentiment, sir.”

“Captain,” Nerah said from the helm to get Callum’, “The Bluefin has cleared the lane and gone to warp.”

“Understood, Ensign. Take us in.” Callum ordered.

“Aye, aye, sir.” Nerah said as his fingers danced over the helm console guiding the Mjolnir into its designated flight path for the final approach to the station, “Locking onto the navigational beacon and sliding us into the lane.”

Turning to face the XO/Communications Station Callum said, “Ye have the bridge, Commander Rel. Once we’re in our parking in our assigned parking orbit notify me and request permission for our off duty crew tae be able tae come onboard the station while we are here.”

“Aye, sir.” Damrus said standing up to go and sit in the center seat as Callum stood up and headed for the ready room.

Walking across the bridge past the helm and ops stations and the Mjolnir’s dedication plaque Callum walked into the ship’s ready room. Once Callum had walked into the ready room he walked past the blue outlined octagon of the ready room’s holo-communicator to the desk.

Once he was sitting in the seat Callum put the mug down and picked up an oversized PADD that was sitting on the desktop and began reading the text of a story from Earth – A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Connan Doyle.

A few minutes later Callum’ combadge chirped signaling him that he had a waiting hail. Putting his PADD down on the desktop Callum tapped his combadge to open the channel before speaking.

“MacLeod, here. Go ahead.” Callum said giving whoever was hailing him permission to speak.

“Commander Rel, Captain.” Damrus’ disembodied voice said coming from Callum’ combadge, “We’ve assumed our parking orbit of the Starbase and have been told that any personnel who wish to go aboard the station have permission to do so.”

“Understood.” Callum said, “Inform the crew, Commander. MacLeod out.”

As the comm-link quietly clicked the ready room’s door chime sounded signaling that someone was waiting in the corridor and wanting to enter the ready room. Figuring there was only one way to see who was on the other side of the door Callum turned to face the door before he began speaking.

“Enter.” Callum said giving permission to enter to whoever was on the other side of the door to come in.

Once the ready room door whooshed open Navesh stepped into room and walked over to the ready room desk before sitting on the desktop next to him.

“What can ah dae for ye, mah bonnie lass?” Callum asked the curvy Orion sitting on his desk beside him.

“I was wondering if you would care to have supper on the Starbase once our shift is over. Its been quite a while since we’ve been to the ‘Drunken Vedek’.” Navesh asked.

“I’d love to.” Callum replied with a smile, “I’ve actually been having a hankering for their hasperat for a while. How about we see about using one of the station’s holodecks afterwards?”

“Great idea.” Navesh replied enthusiastically.

“Of course. That’s why ah have four pips.” Callum said with a smile as he reached into one of the hidden pockets of his tunic, “Ah ALWAYS have good ideas.”

“Whatever you say… sir” Navesh said with a smile on her face and a mock sarcastic tone in her voice.

Hopping of the desk she said, “I really should be getting back to my station, though. I’m still on duty.”

“Permission granted.” Callum said giving Navesh permission to leave.

“See you in a bit?” Navesh asked as she stood up.

“Not if ah see ye first.” Callum said with a chuckle in his voice before Navesh turned and headed for the exit.

Once the door whooshed closed behind Navesh he pulled the ring out of his pocket and looked at his great-grandmother’s engagement ring that had been passed down to him, by his grandmother, with instructions to keep it safe until he found someone special to give it to.

Putting the ring back in his pocket he said, “Soon, mah bonnie lass. Very soon.”

USS Mjolnir orbiting Starbase Twelve

Callum was sitting at the desk in the ready room when his combadge chirped to signal that someone was trying to reach him through the comm-system. Tapping his combadge with the first two fingers of his right hand to open the channel Callum opened the comm-link.

“MacLeod here.” Callum said.

“Commander Rel. Sir.” Damrus’ disembodied voice said coming from his combadge, “Sorry to disturb you, sir. However we’ve received a priority one message from the station.”

“Route it here, Commander.” Callum said turning in his seat and pressing a control on the desktop causing the monitor to rise out of the desktop.
=/\=
“Report, Commander.” Callum ordered as he walked onto the bridge moments later.
“We’re currently orbiting the starbase in our assigned holding pattern.” Damrus reported as he vacated the center seat.

“Recall any crew that are on the station an’ signal all sections tae prepare for immediate departure, Commander.” Callum said sitting down in the center seat, “We’ve been ordered tae leave immediately an’ rendezvous with the Intrepid an’ take their place escortin’ convoy PQ-15. Command is worried aboot Romulans crossing the zone an’ attacking the convoy for the supplies an’ ships themselves.”

“I’d be surprised if they didn’t. Even with every ship in their fleet and Admiral Picard’s evacuation fleet they’ll still need any and every ship they can get.” Damrus said before returning to his station and setting to his assigned task.

“Very true.” Callum replied.

“All crew have reported back onboard and all decks report ready, sir.” Damrus said moments later.

“Get the starbase ops on the comm-link.” Callum said as he sat down in the center seat.

“Aye, sir.” Damrus said with a grin on his face before turning and walking back to the first officer and communications station. A moment later he continued on saying, “Starbase Ops is standing by.”

“Operations, this is the Mjolnir. We are requesting permission to depart.” Callum said as he shifted as he sat in the center seat.

“Mjolnir this is Starbase operations. Hold position and standby for departure. We’re current waiting for the Gibraltar to clear the trajectory you’ve been assigned.” The dock-master responded.

After a couple moments of quietness the voice of the female dock master on duty said, “Mjolnir you are clear for departure. We are transmitting your departure heading now. Do not exceed one quarter impulse until you clear the outer marker.”

“Understood, Ops. Mjolnir oot.” Callum said. Once the comm-link quietly clicked closed he said, “Take us oot, Mister Nerah. One quarter impulse till we clear the outer marker.”

“Aye, sir.” Nerah said as his fingers danced Nerah the helm console as he guided the Mjolnir’s movements, “Coming about... Altering course heading to one one five mark zero. . . we are in the lane and ready for departure.”

Moments later the Bajoran helmsman said, “We are free and clear to navigate, Captain.”

“Understood.” Callum ordered. Once he finished tapping the LCARS control panel on the arm of his chair Callum said, “Ah’ve sent the coordinates for the rendezvous tae your station. Lay in a course an’ engage at warp nine when ready."

“Computer, begin day watch.” Callum said to the computer causing it to begin the day watch. Continuing on as the doors Callum as the doors closed behind the last of the gamma shift bridge crew he said, “All stations report.”

“All offensive and defensive systems are on hot standby.” Gratakka reported from the tactical station on the bulkhead to Callum’ left.

“The intelligence database, combat tracking and holographic masking systems are online and available for use at any point, sir.” Malcolm reported from the Intelligence and Combat Tracking station.

“Primary and secondary systems are fully operational, as are the back ups.” Navesh reported from where she sat at the ops station, “The environmental system is producing a standard M class atmosphere in all pressurized areas of the ship and the grav plating is producing a standard one gee field in all areas with gravity.”

“All communications systems are online and operational, sir.” Damrus reported from the XO/Communications.

“Fabulous, folks.” Callum said. Turning to face the XO/Communications station he said, “Ye have the bridge, Commander Rel. Ah’ll be on mah ready room.”

“Captain, convoy PQ-15 has just come within sensor range.” Navesh said from her positon at the operations station.

“How long to intercept?” Callum asked.

“Thirty-three minutes, at our current speed.” Navesh replied.

“Hail the Intrepid, Commander Rel.” Callum ordered.

“Aye, aye sir. Hailing the Intrepid.” Damrus said from the XO/Communications station. A moment later he continued speaking, “They’re responding.”

Seconds later the Mjolnir’s viewscreen sprang to life with the image of the Intrepid’s bridge, which was visually identical to the bridge of the starship Voyager, Sitting side by side in the captain’s seat and the first officer’s seat at the center of the bridge were the ship’s commanding officer Captain Terrance Riley and the ship’s first officer Commander Jason Hayek.

“Glad to see you, Captain.” Captain Riley said with a smile, “My crew is looking forward to being relieved of convoy duty and to get to Pacifica for some R and R, and frankly so am I.”

“Ah cannae say that ah blame ye.” Callum said returning Riley’s smile, “Unfortunately Ye will need tae wait a little longer. We’re still aboot a half hour oot.”

“I think we can wait that long.” Riley said with a chuckle. Looking at Hayek he said, “What do you think, commander?”

“I think so, Captain... But just barely.” Hayek said with a chuckle.

“Anything interesting to report on?” Callum asked.

“No.” Riley said, “Everything’s been quiet… almost too quiet.”

“Ah understand.” Callum said, “Once we arrive we’ll take your position in the convoy so ye can head tae Risa.”

“Very good, we’ll see you then! Intrepid out.” Riley said before his operations officer closed the communications channel.

Turning to face Damrus at his station Callum stood up from his seat and continued on, “Lets try that again…The bridge is yours, commander.”

“Aye, sir.” Damrus said standing up to take the center seat.

As Callum stepped away from the center seat the Mjolnir suddenly began to shimmy and shake as relays shorted out through the ship. Without warning the ship bucked and rocked as the viewscreen went blank.

“What the ‘ell?!” Callum explained as he was thrown back into the center seat

“We were pulled into some sort of rift.” Vhela said science station

“We seem to be approaching the end of this… whatever it is.” Nerah said from the helm moments later.

Seconds later the grey and black tunnel they were traveling in spiraled open and the Mjolnir emerged into the blackness of normal space. As quickly as the conduit opened up it disappeared in a spectacular flash of light leaving the Mjolnir and her crew alone in empty space.

“All stop. Position and ship’s status reports.” Callum ordered.

“Reading all stop, sir.” Nerah said from the helm as the red alert lights stopped flashing and the lighting throughout the Mjolnir returned to normal. Continuing on he said, “This can’t be right. Commander Tymoshenko, can you confirm that sensors are functioning properly?”

After a moment that she used to check her console Tymoshenko replied, “Confirmed. All sensors are operating within normal parameters. What’s wrong?”

“The stars are in the wrong positions…” Nerah said in disbelief as he double checked the readouts on his console.

“What is it, Ensign?” Callum asked.

“According to the sensors we’ve traveled over fifty-one thousand light years from our previous location.” Nerah reported turning from the helm.

“Commander Tymoshenko, confirm those readings.” Callum ordered, “No offense, Lieutenant.”

“None taken, sir.” Navesh said honestly.

“Readings confirmed. We are over fifty-one thousand light years from our previous location.” Tymoshenko said after running a quick diagnostic on the sensors and double checking the sensor readings, “Sensors indicate that the rift that brought us here is still out there. We should be able to use the rift to return to Federation space but we will need to wait a minimum of sixty hours for it to return to the proper phase before we can make the attempt, unless we want to wind up in some other place in time and space.”

“Understood, Conduct a sensor scan of the area out to as far as the sensors will go.” Callum said, “We might as well take the opportunity to learn a little about this region.”
“Aye, sir.” Tymoshenko said before she turned her attention back to the Ops console.
Turning and looking at Damrus sitting at his station Callum said, “You have the bridge, Commander. I’ll be in my ready room.”

“Aye, sir.” Damrus said standing up from his seat to walk to the center seat and assume command of the bridge as Callum headed for the ready room.

“Captain, the long range sensors have detected a G type star with an M class planet orbiting it five light-years from our current position.” Vhela reported from the science station.

“Can ye tell if it is inhabited?” Callum asked stopping in his tracks and turning to face Vhela.

“Not at this range, sir.” Vhela said from the science station, “Radiation from the planet’s rings is affecting sensor resolution.”

“Understood.” Callum said. Turning to face the helm Callum said, “Are we able tae go tae warp, Lieutenant Nerah?”

After a brief pause that he used to check the status of the warp drive on the helm console Nerah said, “Yes, sir. The warp drive is fully operational.”

“Lieutenant Nerah, take us tae that M class planet. Warp nine.” Callum ordered.

“Aye, aye sir.” Nerah replied as his fingers danced across the helm console guiding the ship to warp, “Engaging at warp nine. ETA at the planet is in twenty-eight hours.”

Standing up as the Mjolnir jumped to warp Callum continued on saying, "Ye have the bridge, Commander Rel. Ah’ll be in mah ready room."

"Aye, sir." Damrus said acknowledging Callum's order as Callum began to cross the bridge as he headed for the ready room.

=/\= Chapter Four =/\=

Stardate 5777.81 (October 9, 2380. 12:10 Federation Standard Starship Time.)
USS Mjolnir
Orbital space, Terralysium system, Beta Quadrant

As Callum sat in his ready room reading from a large PADD his combadge chirped signaling that someone was trying to reach him. Putting the PADD into sleep mode and setting it on the desktop Callum tapped the combadge on his chest to open the channel.

“MacLeod, go ahead.” He said after tapping the combadge.

“Commander Rel, Captain.” Damrus’ disembodied voice said coming from the silver outline of the Starfleet delta on top of two vertical gold quadrangles on his chest, “You wanted to be informed when we were about to enter orbit.”

“Thank-ye, Commander. Ah’ll be right there.” Callum said before tapping the combadge again to close the channel.

Standing up Callum walked around the ready room desk and past the blue octagon of the ready room’s holo-communicator as he headed for the door that led to the bridge. Walking out of the ready room Callum walked past the ops station and the helm station towards the center seat where Callum had stood up and stepped to the side. Once Damrus had returned to the first officer and communications station Callum sat down in the mark seven command chair. Looking at the viewscreen Callum saw the image of a blue green world with a complex ring system as the Mjolnir glided along in a high orbit over the planet’s northern hemisphere.

Turning to the ops station Callum asked, “Any signs o’ habitation?”

“Yes, Captain. There appears to be a pre-warp agrarian civilization on one of the continents.” the curvy Orion said.

“Life signs?” Callum asked.

“Thirteen thousand two hundred and sixty seven spread out between ten settlements on one continent.” Navesh reported. After a moment’s pause her voice took on a surprised tone as she continued on saying, “All human.”

“Ye are telling me there’s a civilization o’ pre-warp HUMANS on that planet? A planet o’er fifty-one thousand light-years from the Sol system?” Callum said with the surprise evident in his voice.

“Yes, sir. I ran the scans three times to be sure. From what we can tell they’ve been there for about four centuries.” Navesh said turning from ops to face Callum as he sat in the center seat.

“Well, the fact that they are human is besides the point. Since they are a pre-warp society the prime directive applies. We will nae be making contact with the locals.” Callum said.

“Captain!” Navesh said from ops as Callum began to stand up.
“Commander?” Callum said.

“I’ve detected what appears to be a Federation power signature coming from one of the buildings in one of the southern settlements.” Navesh replied.

“Well, so much for nae making contact with the locals. We’ll have tae be discreet, but we need tae know how a pre-warp human settlement deep in the beta quadrant has what appears tae be a Federation power source in one o’ its buildings.” Callum said.

Turning back to Damrus he said, “Ah’ll be leading the away team myself. Make arrangements for Human and human appearing crewmembers only. An’ conduct some scans tae determine what kind o’ attire we should be wearing and find us a good beam down site where we will nae be seen materializing.”

“Aye, aye sir.” Damrus replied as setting himself to his assigned task and tried not to worry about whether Callum leading the away team was a good idea since pre-warp humanity had earned a reputation of being, as Q once said, a dangerously savage child race.

=/\= Chapter Five =/\=

Stardate 57771.99 (October 9, 2380. 13:10 Federation Standard Starship Time.)
USS Mjolnir
Terralysium System, Beta Quadrant

An hour later Callum was standing in transporter room one wearing a newly replicated outfit that had been designed to look like the locals’ thanks to visual scans. In one of his jacket pockets was a mark ten TR-590 tricorder, in the other was a Type-Two A phaser pistol. On the left side of his chest under the jacket was his combadge. Under the jacket at the small of his back in a hard sheath was an all black bowie knife style combat knife that had a silver Starfleet delta insignia on the blade by the cross guard of the hilt. The knife’s twenty centimeter long blade had a single edge sharpened to nano molecular sharpness and on the opposite edge was a saw back design was cut into the blade’s edge.

Looking at the away team that Damrus had assembled he saw Ensign Tara Burton and Lieutenant Jonathan Daniels from the ship’s science division, Lieutenant Washbourne, and Petty officer Raymond Sanno from security along with senior chief petty officer Thomas Kemper from engineering all standing in the transporter room each similarly dressed in clothing designed to look like the locals’ clothing.

“Alright people, Ahm nae sure how much you’ve been informed but we’re beaming down tae a planet with a pre-warp agrarian HUMAN culture on it tae see why there is what seems like a Federation power signature comin’ from their planet.” Callum said. Continuing on he said, “From what we can tell the humans down there seem tae have been here since aboot the mid twenty-first century. Under no circumstances are we tae let them know that we are from another world. Please ensure any advanced technology remains oot o’ sight as the prime directive applies. Any questions?”

When no one said anything Callum stepped up onto the transporter platform and stood on one of the pads as the rest of the away team stepped up onto the transporter platform and each took a spot on one of the transporter pads. Seconds later Callum’s view of the transporter room disappeared in a flurry silver sparkles and was replaced moments later by a sunlit clearing at the in the tree line were the landscape transitioned from heavily forested to lightly forested before transitioning again to cleared farmland. Looking around Callum saw that they were alone in the clearing. Pulling his Mark X TR-590 tricorder from one of the pockets of his jacket Callum opened it with a flip of his wrist. After a quick tricorder scan to confirm what his eyes told and to get a directional bearing to take them to the settlement.

Putting the tricorder back in the jacket pocket he had taken it out of Callum pointed ahead of them and said, “Alright, lets move oot. The power signature is comin’ from that direction.”

After fifteen minutes of walking the away team came to the edge of what looked like a farming village from Earth’s nineteenth century North America. Looking around Callum saw several buildings including what appeared to be a church that appeared to be the oldest building in the village. Reaching into his pocket that held the tricorder Callum looked around, not seeing anyone but the away team he pulled the tricorder out of the pocket and quickly flipped it open with another flick of his wrist and began a quick scan to narrow down the location of the Federation power signature. Closing the tricorder and putting it back in his jacket pocket Callum pointed to the church before he began speaking.

“The power signature seems tae be coming from the basement o’ the church.” Callum said.

As Callum finished speaking a grey haired woman wearing flowing red robes walked out of the church and seeing the away team started walking towards them. Opening her arms wide as she walked towards the away team the grey haired woman began speaking.

“Visitors! Its been a while since we’ve had visitors. Welcome to the town of New Eden. I am Kamala, the All-Mother of this village.” The grey haired woman said as she walked towards the away team and they towards her.

“Ahm Callum.” Callum said. Pointing to each member of the away team in turn he continued with the introductions, “This is Tara, Jonathan, Malcolm, Raymond an’ Thomas. We’re from north o’ here.”

“Ah! Its been a while since we’ve had visitors from the Northern Territories. You must be here to see the White Church. It is the oldest structure on Terralysium, after all. The Red Angel brought it here with the First Saved when it rescued them from the nuclear bombs during the Final War back on First Earth.” The All-Mother said.

“That’s why we’re here. We were in the area an’ couldn’t resist the opportunity tae see the White Church.” Callum said quickly picking up on the unintended opening the All-Mother provided.

“I was about to head to the well to get water to bring to the fields for the workers. Feel free to look around the church if you wish. When I return from the fields I can answer any questions you may have about the White Church and the First Saved.” The All-Mother said taking half a step back and turning to the side as she gestured to the church.

“We look forward tae it.” Callum said with a smile on his face.

“I’ll see you later.” The All-Mother said before walking off deeper into the village.
Gesturing to the village around them Callum continued on saying, “Ah doubt very much these people have developed the equivalent o’ Federation technology on their own.”

Once Callum and the rest of the away team entered the small church they immediately fanned out and began looking around for anything that could be giving off a Federation power signature. As he was looking around the altar Callum happened to glance at the stain glass windows of the church and was quite surprised by the diversity of faiths the stain glass showed. Looking at the bank of stain glass windows off to one side he saw images depicting how humans were brought to Terralysium at the height of Earth’s third world war by what appeared to be a red angel surrounded by pillars of fire.

“Ensign Burton, make sure ye get detailed visual scans o’ the stain glass windows. Mah gut is telling me that those windows tell the story o’ how these people’s ancestors got here an’ the founding o’ their religion.” Callum said calling out as he got back to looking for the power signature.

“Already on it, sir.” Ensign Burton replied as she scanned one of the stain glass windows, “A find like this could get me published in the Federation Anthropological Journal.”

With a slight chuckle and a half shake of his head Callum thought “A & A Officers… gotta love 'em.”

“Captain, I think I have something!” Senior Chief Petty Officer Kemper said interrupting Callum’s reverie and calling him over to one of the corners of the church.

Once he had walked over and was standing by the non-comm engineer Callum said, “So what dae ye have, Chief?”

Pointing to the door in front of them Kemper said, “Very likely the door to the basement, if this is anything like the church my parents made me go to back in Indiana. And I’d be willing to put credits on the source of the power signature being down there.”

“Well then, chief… by all means lead on.” Callum said. Turning to face the rest of the away team who was spread out throughout the church he said, “Ensign Burton, keep getting visual scans o’ any and everything ye can. Lieutenant Daniels, Crewman Burke you are with us. Crewman Sanno ye have guard duty up here, assist Ensign Burton as needed.”

Once Callum, Daniels, Malcolm and Kemper had descended the stairs to the basement they fanned out to look around the basement to see if they could find the source of the Federation power signature. Looking at the church’s electrical panel Callum saw that it had been opened up and a series of batteries that had likely been connected to it was sitting on the nearby work bench and in their place wired into the electrical panel was an adaptor with a fiber-optic cable that was connected to an old but clearly Federation designed power cell. Walking over he looked at the power cell and saw it bore the words, ‘USS DISCOVERY NCC – 1031’ on its identification plaque.

“Ah think ah’ve found the answer.” Callum said, “It looks like we’re nae the first Starfleet ship tae make it oot this far.”

“I’ve never heard of a USS DISCOVERY with that low a registry number.” Malcolm said once he had walked over and saw what Callum as looking at, “That low a registry number would mean it was one of the old Crossfield class ships, but I’ve never heard of there being a Crossfield class ship named Discovery.”

Pulling out a tricorder Kemper scanned the power cell then looked at Callum and said, “They appear to be using the power cell to power the this building. According to this even if they only use it to run the lights it’ll only last for another five years, at the most, and these people clearly have no way of recharging it.”

“Understood, chief.” Callum said. Reaching under his jacket and tapping his combadge Callum said, “MacLeod tae Mjolnir.”

A moment later Damrus's voice came from Callum’s combadge and said, “Mjolnir. Rel here. What can we do for you, Captain?”

“You can beam a long-term saurium-krellide power cell for portable subspace transmitters tae mah location and standby tae beam the away team back tae the ship” Callum replied.

“You want us to beam down a power cell, sir?” Damrus asked with the confusion clear in his voice.

“Ye heard the order, commander. MacLeod oot.” Callum said before tapping his combadge again to close the channel without waiting for Damrus’s reply.

“Sir?” Malcolm said questioning why Callum had ordered that another power cell be beamed down.

“Clearly someone from at least the Federation, and possibly from Starfleet, has already made at least limited contact with these people. Ahm nae going tae make contact again, however leaving another power cell – which they clearly know how tae use – does nae constitute making contact in my opinion and it keeps them from loosing the use o’ electricity when their current one is depleted.”

Moments later a small silver glow appeared on the floor in front of Callum and formed into the shape of a power cell for portable subspace transmitters. Once the light of the transporter effect disappeared Callum bent over and picked up the power cell and, and after standing up, placed it on the work bench next to the power cell from the starship Discovery.

Reaching under his jacket and tapping his combadge Callum said, “MacLeod tae Mjolnir.”

A moment later Damrus's voice once again came from Callum’s combadge and saying, “Mjolnir. Rel here.”

“Have the transporter room lock on tae us and beam us back to the ship. Once we’re back onboard have Lieutenant Nerah lay in a return course for the coordinates of the vortex and engage at warp nine.” Callum ordered.

“Aye, sir.” Damrus replied.

Moments later Callum felt the grip of the transporter’s annular confinement beam take a hold of him a moment before his vision was obscured by the silver sparkles of the transporter effect. Moments later as the sparkles disappeared the church’s basement was replaced by the view of the Mjolnir’s transporter room. As Callum stepped off of the transporter pad he nodded at ensign Jean Hajar who was standing at the transporter console in front of the transporter platform as he reached under his jacked and tapped his combadge.

“MacLeod tae the bridge.” Callum said after tapping the combadge.

A moment later Damrus's voice once again came from Callum’s combadge and saying, “Bridge here.”

“What’s our status? Commander?” Callum asked.

“We have broken orbit and are heading for the coordinates of the vortex at warp nine. We are due to arrive back there in twenty-eight hours.” Damrus said.

“Understood. Ahm going tae stop by my quarters tae change back into mah uniform. MacLeod oot.” Callum said before tapping his combadge to close the channel.

Turning and looking at the rest of the away team as they stepped off of the transporter platform Callum said, “Ye all can consider yourselves dismissed.”

=/\= Chapter Six =/\=

Stardate 57775.18 (October 10, 2380. 17:15 Federation Standard Starship Time.)
USS Mjolnir
Interstellar space, Beta Quadrant

“Captain, the vortex is at the proper phase for us to get back to Federation space” Vhela announced from the science station.

“On it!” Nerah said not waiting for the order as he guided the Mjolnir towards the vortex “Ten seconds to the vortex.”

Seconds later the multi-spectral imaging sensors in the viewscreen showed the swirling purple vortex spiral open to admit the Mjolnir.

“Captain, I’m getting unusual readings from the vortex.” Vhela reported from the science station as the ship crossed the vortex’s threshold, "It seems to be collapsing!”

“I’m picking up a massive energy wave approaching from aft.” Nerah said.

“Any chance that we can we out run it?” Callum asked having a feeling he knew the answer.

“Negative… Contact in sixty seconds.” Nerah reported, “And we’re at least eighty seconds from the end of the vortex.”

“Commander Tymoshenko, divert all possible power tae the aft shields. Take it from wherever ye need, except the engines.” Callum ordered, “We’re goin’ tae ride that wave all the way tae the other side. ”

“The wave will make contact ten seconds.” Vhela reported.

“ALL HANDS! BRACE FOR IMPACT!” Callum ordered.

Seconds later a bright light spilt out from the viewscreen temporarily blinding the crew before the automatic filtering programs could reduce the brightness as the energy wave made contact with the Mjolnir’s aft shields and was propelled through the conduit at incredible speeds towards the other end of the vortex. As the Mjolnir was propelled forwards time seemed to slow down almost to a stop like the fading doppler shift of a retreating siren before reality spun into motion again.

“Firing RCS thrusters.” Nerah said from the helm as the viewscreen showed that the Mjolnir was spinning like a top as it careened out of control through the blackness of space. Seconds later Nerah continued speaking saying, “Sensors now registering all stop.”

“Damage control teams to the bridge!” Callum ordered as smoke and sparks spewed from damaged consoles and conduits onto the bridge.

“Captain, we’re back where we started.” Navesh reported from Ops said from the ops station as the turbolift doors on the port side of the bridge opened up letting the damage control team onto the bridge.

“Are sensors still reading the vortex?” Callum asked.

“No, sir.” Navesh reported, “According to the sensor data it seems to have completely collapsed after we came through.”

“Are we where we’re supposed tae be?” Callum asked.

“We’ve come up a little short.” Nerah said reviewing the readouts on the helm.
“How short is short?” Callum asked.

“Five hundred light years.” Nerah said after turning from the helm to look at Callum.

“Four months at warp nine.” Callum said, “Ah suppose it could be worse.”

“Yea, it could’ve been the thirty-some years it would’ve taken us to get back from Terralysium.” Nerah replied.

After a moment’s pause to collect his thoughts Callum said, “Lieutenant Nerah, lay in a course for home.”

The adventures of the Mjolnir’s crew will continue in…
