Was Ezri Dax a poor choice?

Ezri II

Captain
There has been talk since the ending of Deep Space 9 that Ezri Dax was a poor choice as a replacement. Would love to understand your personal feelings with Ezri Dax.

Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the actor?
Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the writters?
Was Ezri Dax a bad idea as it was adding a new Dax to DS9?

You can add more and I will debate with you.

I thought Ezri Dax was a great character. In the beginning when she was real ditsy she was just the sort of character I dislike.. but she was still very appealing. The actor was fabulous! Ezri was a refreshing change from Jadzia and IMO had much more personality. It was great seeing Ezri recoiling at all the Klingon stuff Jadzia had embraced. I think we learned a lot about Trill joining with Ezri, such as how she moves into a Command track and away from counseling (I'm sorry, this may have happened only in the books, I can't recall).

The continued relationship of Sisko with the Dax symbiont via Ezri was very well done.

And finally I think the Bashir/Ezri romance was one of the most believable and satisfying.

INDEED!

Was sad to see Jadzia Dax having to be killed. True, was annoyed with Ezri Dax with the first few shows but she started to become much stronger all the way to the end. Anyway, I think they had to make Ezri look weak when she joined the show so they could make her stronger as a character. Ezri had a fast character change then any of the characters of DS9. So, Ezri is more complex as her character changed so fast in such a short time.

With Ezri and Sisko, there was more play with the idea of the relationship then with Jadzia.

Bashir and Ezri, more interesting and I did like the choice to make them a couple.

I do have some issues with the mirror Ezri, as I find her too ruff and for her to play as a lesbian or to be more willing to be a lesbian I have a problem. With Ezri, Kira and Leeta, I do not have a problem with the writters to make them be as lesbians. It is just that all the male mirror characters were never made to act like they were gay.

Ezri with Worf, Worf is Worf and nobody can change that.

Ezri dealing with other women characters, (like Kira) not in the mirror universe could have been done better. Other dealing with her mother that I did find annoying, not much to do with Leeta or Kira on the show.

Both Daxes were poor choices. Both were completely useless, unnecessary characters and totally irrelevant to the plot.

The show would have been much better with neither Dax ever having been on it.

Ezri was an improvement over Jadzia because at least the Ezri actress had some acting ability and personality. But Ezri still dragged the show down a lot, just not as much as Jadzia did.

Deep Space 9 would really have been poor if there was not a DAX. If there was not a DAX, that would be 1 less female character and make Kira the only female character that has a returning role in every episode. That would make Star Fleet have no female characters on DS9.

In my judgment they needed a second star fleet female officer other then the Dax women. Women do stuff different when they have to deal with a woman or a man.

^

Adding another woman 'just for the sake of having another woman' is a very bad reason to add a character to the show. The useless presence of both Daxes on the show bears that point out.

NO it is to add more of a balance with the natural relationship of male to female in the population. If we removed both Dax's and not replace her with a female character.

If we also remove Kira and only have 100% male characters on Deep Space 9 we would be having these weird treads called

Sisko and Worf
Odo and Sisko
Sisko and Odo
Worf and Bashir
Bashir and Sisko

MAN THAT IS THE MOST GAY topics to be talking about.

They were not lesbians, they were sexually omnivorous. Sex was just another currency to get what they wanted, whether with males or females.

The reason you didn't see that with the male characters was, as I understand it, that it was more taboo on tv. Girl on girl action has wide fanboy appeal. Same can't be said for the menz.

FINE, sexually omnivorous or being bisexural is fine. And yes girl on girl action does have a wide fan base. Still, it does undermine the mirror universe because of the sexually omnivorous acts with the girl girl action.

If Ezri, Kira and Leeta can be sexually omnivourous in the mirror universe what makes them in our universe?

What do you mean "what makes them in our universe?"

What makes them what?

Are not the characters in our universe and the mirror universe the polar difference of each other. Our universe gave us the will to seek out new life and build a peaceful brotherhood. The mirror universe gave us, war with other species and a drive to place others into slavery or death.

So, if Ezri, Kira and Leeta were sexural in the style you call. What would they be in our universe when it comes to sex? Just me, I just do not see Sisko seeing Ezri and Kira in a liplock.

Most of those are great relationships in which interesting things happened when those characters crosssed paths; all on that list were except for Worf and Bashir I'd say. But more Worf and Odo together would have been amazing as well. Jadzia however, was never interesting when paired with any of them, or when paired with anyone else not on that list.

Kira served a useful, plot-relevant purpose on the show as the representative of Bajor's interests on the station and in the AQ, so there's no reason to have got rid of her.

No they are not the polar difference. They are not opposite in any way.

They look the same, have the same names but it ends there. They are completely different people.

They are more alternate than literal mirror.

So if the mirror universe Ezri came to Deep Space 9 and came into contact with Ezri Dax. I hope they will not go hand in hand and talk about we should check our spots to see if we are really alike from top to bottom. See, I know that would be a big turn on with girl on girl action. Anyway, it was a little annoying to see that happen with Kira and it would be so painful to see that with Ezri.

With our Kira, she understood there was something wrong with it. Just glad the writters did not place that same problem with Ezri Dax. Still, if there was a season 8 and they did go back with a mirror episode it begs the question if they would.

I didn't have any specific issues with Ezri though I think season 7 would have been better if she had not joined the crew on a permanent basis. We had 26 episodes left to wrap up the show and given the high number of supporting characters there were quite a few storylines to complete and adding Ezri who had to be introduced, explored and then wrap up stole time from the show. Also they would have saved some money from have one less actor, which at a stretch could have been used for the final episode so we didn't have to see so many reused battle scenes.

I have nothing wrong with the Dax character but maybe just have it for an episode or two. Have Dax return to the station and move her on to something else, which is what Trills are meant to do when they take a new host.

Well, from what we saw Kira, Ezri and Leeta are all heterosexual. We only see them in or seeking relationships with men (or characters that identified themselves as male).

I preferred Jadzia... Ezri (actor and character) never seemed up to anything that she was supposed to be doing, from her ditzy-ness as mentioned, to her space sickness, to Worf...

I mean, Jadzia was smart, she was crafty... and she succeeded most of the time, despite her initial doubts due to what Curzon put her through. She was stronger, most of the time... and more like someone in the future, to me. More like a Trill even.

If they would what? Make both Ezri's jump in the sack?

The mirror Ezri was an interesting character always with the potential to go either way in regards to choices (meaning evil vs good). *IF* she began a relationship with our Ezri and they ended up being sexually intimate there would be nothing wrong with that from an in-universe perspective provided it was mutual and consenting. There would be something wrong with it from a viewers perspective as far as it catering to the T&A crowd though. From in-universe they are totally different people, not siblings, not twins so it's not an ethically questionable pairing.

The reason Kira was repulsed by the Mirror Kira was not because she was having sex with women. It was because she used sex to get her own way, to coerce and as a weapon. The Mirror Kira is a voracious power mad character.

Ahhh something wrong from the viewers perspective. Still, the writters could not go there with the show. Still, the fans could go there if they wanted and still have some connection with DS9.

You would agree if a fan wanted, he could write a story with Ezri and the mirror Ezri then say Sisko and Worf with a sexural plot. The writters did write it in a way it could happen with both Ezri's then with say Sisko and Worf.

As you said, girl on girl action was more acceptible then man on man action.

I liked Jadzia better than Ezri, because of how irreverent she was. I know that Ezri was not trained for the joining, and hence, that's why her character was a bit ditzy in the beginning. She wasn't picked specifically to be joined with the Dax symbiont, so it was all very new and confusing for her.

Eventually, I did like Ezri, and you know, you do have to move on when a character is killed off. With the whole symbiont angle, though, part of the character never has to be gone forever -- stick the symbiont in a new body, and voila! New character who conveniently has the old one's memories.

How much more of a challenge would it have been for Worf if Dax came back as a man? I'm sure there wouldn't have been Brokeback Trek, of course!
