Was an Ok Show

I don't understand why people diss Jolene Blalock's acting, I don't know what she's like in anything else, but I thought she was really good as T'Pol.
OK, lets see... I've seen her in Jason and the argonatus, and she was... Not good. I've also seen her in Slow Burn where she was... Hmmm.... Not good. I've seen about 30 minutes of Starship Troopers III, she wasn't any worse than Casper Van Dien, but that's hardly a challenge, isn't it?..
Shadow Puppets, well, I've endured about 20 minutes of that sh#tfest, and Jolene was down right terrible.
I should've said "I don't understand why people diss her performance in ENT" to avoid any misunderstandings... Since I've barely seen her in anything else, I'll take your word for it. I actually did see Jason and the Argonauts a few years ago, and man, that was a crap movie. I remember she had lots of very weird makeup, and she was very wooden... it didn't look that bad in that competition, though - I was too distracted by Angus MacFadyen's terrible overacting (as usual) as Zeus, and by how awful and charisma-free that Keanu-lite guy who played Jason was. I remember thinking that it was impossible to believe that anyone would leave their home and family for that guy, and if I were Medea, I'd have opted for incest instead, since both her brother and her father (James Callis and Frank Langella) were way hotter. :rommie:

All in all, I can only conclude that Jolene Blalock has exactly zero acting talent, but for some reason, she was almost perfect as T'Pol... Go figure.
Well, obviously not literally zero talent :) since you have to have some talent to play at least one role well - even if you're playing yourself, you have to pretend that you're actually put in those situations... but some actors have very limited range, and even though that makes them bad actors overall, they can be really perfect in a role that's tailor-made for them. Jolene Blalock was a Trek fan and a fan of Vulcans and Spock, maybe she related to a Vulcan character.

I found Hoshi to be more attractive, but whatever :p

I thought Hoshi was cute, for sure. On the rare occasion she brought her "sexy" out, she was downright hot.

So when are one of you going to start a Hoshi appreciation thread?

Some actors can turn any performance into gold, and some films are so badly written that even the greatest actors wouldn't be able to save them. For example, I'm a big fan of Peter Cushing, and he did some awful films in his last years, but he was always able to do something wonderful with the characters he played. But then you take a look at some of the drivel Olivier or Brando did late in life... probably not the performances they'd want to be remembered for.

There are some "roles of a lifetime" that will inspire an actor to do outstanding work... Ron Perlman as Vincent in Beauty and the Beast, or James Marsters as Spike in Buffy come to mind. Bakula probably considers Sam Beckett a tour-de-force role, and I would agree -- I thought he did terrific work on Quantum Leap.

Personally, I think Blalock really grew as an actress over the course of Enterprise, and was able to bring a lot of layers and subtlety to her performance. (I think you're onto something, DevilEyes, about Blalock's admiration for Trek helping to inspire her performance.) Even the times when she herself said she had trouble getting a handle on T'Pol -- such as the trellium arc in Season 3 -- I thought she did a great job.

Hubby and I saw "Starship Troopers 3" last year, and for what it was -- a cheap knockoff sequel thing with no A-list actors -- we thought it was fun. We had a good time with it. There are plenty of gazillion-dollar movie-star-driven blockbusters out there that didn't entertain me at all.

Playing a Vulcan is undoubtedly a challenge for any actor-- look at the guest actors playing Vulcans, and the difficulties many of them had trying to make their characters interesting without becoming too emotional.

I'm new here. You mean that hasn't already been done 100 times? :wtf:
Yes, and if you think that fact might prevent it from being done about 3 or 400 more times, you really are new here. :)

I've heard that S3 and S4 are excellent, and am definitely going to watch the whole series. If I survived the first season of B5 and still love the story, I can survive the first season of any Trek series...

A comparison I shall run with! Thing is, I liked season 1 of B5. The early stages were kind of creaky, but it was fun and engaging and by the season finale the main problems had been ironed out. By contrast, I found season 1 of Enterprise to be competent but dull. To me, it felt like an inferior retread of shows I'd already seen with characters that didn't do much for me. Somehow the series just lacked the sort of spark that would make me like it.

Oh, and Linda Park is definitely my favourite of the ladies from this show. Her character wasn't fleshed out much in the episodes I saw, but the actress is gorgeous whether she's dressed to be sexy or not.

Yeah, but I try to avoid being "that guy".

The forum for my favorite band for example, if you dare annoy those people by saying or asking anything that has been said before, you will be chastised. Up to and including being told to "go die". People here seem a bit more patient. ;)

Yes, it definitely got better towards the end of the season. Still, I remember having trouble keeping my interest up - happily I had friends who had seen the series before and were urging me to go on with it, because by the midpoint of the second season I was completely hooked and 3rd season's Z'ha'dum must be the 50 minutes of television which I've watched the most... I've probably seen that episode 20 times!

It does seem dull. After about 20 episodes I find the stories a bit pedestrian. T'Pol I already commented on. Archer is annoying, Hoshi I haven't really paid much attention to. Surprisingly, I find myself liking Trip. I thought I would not care for the character. He seems a likable fellow, as does Malcolm. Phlox is also a good character, but I question his place on the Enterprise - wouldn't it be more logical to have a human doctor on board? After all, these are early days for humanity's reach into the stars.

And then some minor details.

I keep finding the 'alien' languages too similar. Of course it's better than every new species suddenly speaking perfect American English thanks to a magical universal translator, but so far the languages all sound really similar and they all sound like gibberish words put together, not coherent. Think of Earth languages, how different they all sound! German, French, English, Finnish, Chinese, Japanese... plenty of different ways for a language to sound like.

The Vulcans sure seem different from the logical and benevolent race I know and love. That might be a good thing; they might get more depth. I don't know yet. I like seeing Andorians.

The Temporal Cold War is an interesting concept. I would guess that there is time travel to come. I'm sorta hoping for a TOS-like 'back in the '60's' episode or something similar - although they're always silly, they're also often fun.

I agree with you Sky, the character of Archer was annoying and all over the place emotionally. In seasons three and four he leveled out. Also, during the first two seasons Trip and Archer seemed to be yelling their lines alot when just speaking them would have been fine. I don't know if it was the actors or the way the director wanted the lines read but it got to be annoying.
I also wish that B&B would have toned down the technology on Enterprise. The transporters should not have been used until maybe the second or third season and should have taken longer to use than they did on TOS.

When most fans liked the show for T'Pol what further point need to be made about it's Star Trek worthiness? I like Jolene Blalock on anything for the same reason most liked her on Enterprise. When you take her out Enterprise was only an OK show in the rankings of all the great Star Trek series.

For me, Enterprise had SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much potential. But here is where, IMO, it went wrong.

They became just another standard STAR TREK crew. After season two you could have swapped out Hoshi for Kim...Tucker for Geordi..whatever. What was promised at the convention I was at was a Star Trek show that would show the first real TREK crew going into space and being this, and I remember Braga or someone saying, "raw". Nope...they became seasoned pros and from there, for me, the show was just another version of TOS which we had already seen with TNG and Voyager.

And the most glaring reason I didn't get into this show? Because its painfully clear, for no fault of own I admit, that this crew was totally forgotten just 100 years later by Kirk, and all the later shows to come.

As for how I rank the shows? TOS-DS9-TNG-Voy-Ent.

After having been around here for just over a week, I actually feel pretty lucky to love all 5 Trek series. I don't see many people saying that. Seems like even the most hardcore fans hate at least 1 or 2 of the series. Enterprise seems to be about the least popular, close to Voyager. Enterprise is my #1, with DS9 a close #2.

On the subject of season 1, I thought it was the strongest season 1 of all the Treks. I thought the first 7 episodes were really strong, and no other Trek comes close to that right out of the gate.

i would actually agree with that statement..because in those first seven episodes they were doing exactly what i wanted..First this..first that...the awe of being in space...but it quickly fades and became just another version TOS with a cheaper cast..too much "been there done that" after being promised it would be fresh and different..wrong..

It's sad that B&B couldn't get Tpol's appearance, especially her eyebrows, right during the first two seasons.

So... B&B are make-up artists now? :wtf:

Michelle Forbes (Ensign Ro-TNG) said Berman used to come into the makeup department when she was getting ready for the show and run his fingers through her hair...saying "he wasn't sure about the cut." (She said this was done everytime she was in the makeup chair)

She said it "creeped her out"...dude, I don't blame her!

IIRC, B&B decided how T'Pol's eye brows and ears were to be done. ... Jolene, a fan of Trek since she was a kid, didn't like it, so at the start of Season 3, she and her makeup artist made the changes on their own. I read somewhere that she just showed up on the set with the changes and nothing was said. I thought the new look was fantastic.
