View-Master Presents Star Trek

Eight different packs have Star Trek elements.

Therin, you described how Roddenberry put off the View Master staff by a week so his episode would be the one photographed. This may help explain what I've considered a minor mystery. In Solow/Justman's book, they talked about the problems of getting 1st season episodes ready for airing, along with the possibility of requesting that NBC might have to schedule an early rerun. "What Are Little Girls Made Of" was rerun eight week after its original airdate.

I've always wondered why this ep was chosen - and its probably because it was a "Majel Barrett episode". I suppose that Sherry Jackson and the penis rock weren't really the reason. ;)

I dunno. At that very early stage, I think they might have repeated the one "typical" episode that would bring in new viewers.

Put "property of startrekanimated.com" across the center of each one

Except they're not "property of startrekanimated.com". They are "property of View-Master" and "copyright Filmation/Paramount/CBS".

That's true, they are not my property. However, I did buy a special adapter for my scanner to be able to capture those images, which I do not believe are available anywhere else on the net, and I spent a lot of time making them, sO I think I'm entitled to at least a mention if someone else were to take them and post them on their own sites.

Undoubtedly. But, in saying that, I probably have one of your TAS View-Master images on my blog site, because it was in my file of "interesting TAS pics I've found on the web and saved, but have no idea where I once found them, or who sent them to me, but it's the perfect pic for this blog entry".

I also have a Thelin pic on my Andorian site, but I think that was a Kurt Danhauser screenshot, for which I sought permission.

I cetainly know how it feels to have images lifted. A Belgian fan once took my entire "Races of the UFP" page, translated my research into German and then appropriated over 50 images I'd lovingly hunted down, scanned, colour-corrected, re-sized, flipped, etc. He also used to revisit every time I updated the page with new pics and info! I emailed him, and he justified the act by saying there were no live links that led to the page, as it was private and used only by a small Star Trek roleplay gaming group... and yet I'd found the page via Google!

I posted it in this very thread, in a message I directed at you.

I find my TAS images all over the net, so I know how you feel. People even take my original artwork and put them on products and sell them on Ebay. One guy offered to autograph artwork I MADE for buyers.

I very often find my artwork on other peoples websites, with my name and web address removed and theirs in it's place. What nerve! I mean, if you are going to make a website, make your own grafics!! And to top it off, they are often hotlinked back to my site! Not only do they steal my work, they steal my bandwidth!

When they're not making a living from the "borrowings", I guess it's hard to complain that they "stole" our "stolen" designs, but...

Today I was at a long-running collectors' fair and one new table was doing rather brisk business. When I went over to see what he was selling, they were white ceramic mugs with rather boring images, many no doubt Internet images, of a whole range of SF movies, TV shows and personalities, on them. He'd obviously invested in one of those shaped heating machines that allows him to put computer print-outs (on thermal transfer paper) onto mugs. Nothing was licensed, of course, and people could have had their own hand-selected, favourite images applied at any copy centre selling such mugs, but this guy was the new face in town today, and there's obviously never a shortage of people willing to collect unlicensed crap! ;-)

(I still found myself looking to see if any designs caught my eye.)

As I said, I know I don't own TAS, or the character designs, but it still erks me because I spend so much time and effort creating nice, cool, TAS images. I'm not talking about screencaps, which anyone can do, I'm talking about my spending 4, 5, hours making something unique.

Here is a small example...

Do you have any idea how long it takes me to create something like this? Each character is pain stakingly redrawn. Yet I find it all over the net, with someone elses name on it. If someone writes me, I usually give permission to use my stuff, but just taking it pisses me off.

Yep! And a woman once tried to pass off my M'Ress customized action figure as her own work. I asked her if she still owned the rubber drink coaster the model was standing on for the photo!

Most people tend to see the Internet as this huge virtual smogasbord of free things. It's easier (and cheaper) to lift images than to create them. Human nature.

What I meant was, bid for a set of the reels, and buy yourself a View-Master, and see 'em in 3-D!

Yeah, but watch out for the ones whose color has faded to red.

Of course, Kirk wearing a red shirt would put to rest the myth that his command shirt was yellow. ;)

I have quite a few viewmaster sets from when I was a kid, and all the colors have held up pretty well.

I have over 100 packets, at least 20 or so date back to the mid 70s. None have turned red.

Yes, because you know how to store them. I got one off ebay that looked like it was stored in red cool-aid. :(

I read a description of how the other colors will fade over time if not stored properly, leaving a red tint.

Not really. I started with a transparent-lidded plastic file box used to store recipe cards, and when View-Master switched to tall carded packs, I started keeping them in an open clock box. They aren't stored in full sunlight, but then neither have they been in a dark cupboard.

Neither have mine. And all of mine are loose...out of the package. I never kept the original boxes and packaging, but all of my reels still have good color and appearances.
