Uhura in Mirror, Mirror

AxelFoley

Commander
Red Shirt
I've always had a little crush on Uhura ever since I started watching Star Trek. She's the most beautiful woman in Star Trek history IMO.

The other night I watched Mirror, Mirror for the first time ever, and BOY is she smoking hot in that suit where she reveals her very trained belly! I can't get that image out of my mind. If I was an adolescent kid I'd have my fantasies set 'til I'd hit my 20's.

Anyone else agrees with this?

I'm sure there are a lot on this board who'll agree on this. Me? I like her, but she's definitely not "the most beautiful woman in Star Trek history". For TOS this honor goes to Helen Noel (or Andrea; depends :D ).

She can hail my frequencies any day.

And remember, the woman was a dancer, and she kept herself in shape. She was only in her mid-30s, and she had her one child in her early 20s. It's quite possible her body was that toned.

Yeah Uhura was indeed hot in "Mirror, Mirror" and indeed I would say in one particular tease scene during "The Final Frontier" as well.

Now I ask you...

Is it just me, or does it look like half the fashion of the Britney Spears generation came from watching reruns of TOS???

(Example, low-rise mini-skirts and pants)

Bill Theiss was a genius. You didn't know that? ;)

But who said geniuses can't make a mistake?

How come Uhura was allowed to show her belly button when all the other ladies in the series had theirs skillfully hidden by Bill Theiss' costumes? Not that I'm complaining, mind you, just curious. And wasn't this (showing a belly button) a first for network TV in the 60's, an honor that usually goes to Cher?

Now, kids...

Maybe Uhura's exposure was prophetic, since the big schtick common to most female pop acts under age 30 seems to be white girls acting like naughty black girls. (Christina Aguilera's "Fat Albert" voice, as a vivd example)

As for why NBC let her go on "navel maneuvers" that Barb Eden could only dream of, maybe it was the old racist mentality that Nichols could do it, because it was "expected" of someone who was non-white; we are talking about October of '67, after all. Before anyone protests or blushes, consider this: look at the number of original cast members of "Sesame Street" on NET/PBS only a couple of years later, and you'll see a number of blacks and latinos, who were deliberately selected to stimulate their audience because they would not be seen as authority figures.

Again, does anyone see a mistake here?

Hindsight being 20/20, I see a future porn star.

Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I see "The Gamesters of Triskellion" as better then a TOS bomb. The scenes of Kirk and Shawna interacting are lame, but that's lackluster writing, not the appearance of a provocatively-dressed guest star. You can say they should've showed less skin, but in the ironic era we live in today I'd say seeing Angelique Pettyjohn in sweat tights would've been just as distracting. (Actually, the hair was the only serious mistake as far as I'm concerned.)

I think you got me wrong. With this picture and the assertion that it was a "mistake" by Theiss I was merely commenting on the strange design and not on the way in which it exposed the actresses skin or how the episode plays out. I love most of Theiss' costumes. But this on? No.

Are you sure that's why they included minorities on Sesame Street? Is there a link to that somewhere?

As to the navel thing, that did cross my mind but it seemed too insidious that the costume designers, producers and so on all were confident that they could get away with it because of Uhura's race. I mean, anything's possible, but I googled around a bit and found Sally Field laughing about not being able to show her navel in her swimsuits when the extras on the show did. Similarly, there was an issue with Mary Ann showing her navel and Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In had women in navel-baring bikinis airing right after I Dream of Jeannie. Everyone involved seem to imply that it was of particular concern that the star of the show not have their navel permanently on display not that it was outright forbidden. LINK
