UEFA Euro 2016 + Qualifiers

What was that?
Did the lads wearing the three lions think that Brexit means they have to leave the EURO?

So the plan to defeat the deep Iceland defense was to... run at the defenders in the middle and hope for the best? And waste every set piece, because those are for noobs anyhow?
:brickwall:

I'm not sure what surprised me more: Iceland actually being really good about passing and creating nice plays, and generally being courageous and fighting.
Or England being truly and completely awful. I mean, just how bad was that?! :o

I shouldn't laugh about the Iceland - England result, but really. The nation that constantly tells everyone it invented the sport losing to a nation with a population slightly less than Canberra. You couldn't make this up. It's brilliant for Iceland and for football.

It says something significant about the degree of hubris and arrogance some English people have about the sport that (according to the Graun's live blog) at half time the ITV panel were contemplating whether Hodgson should drop Hart for the quarter final. People like that deserve this result.

We know what ENG need but it won't happen, it never happens. Hart will remain number 1, Stones will sit on bench more than he plays, Barkley won't get the game time, Rooney will remain being played wrong, Our wingers aren't actually wingers and anyone with real talent will be injured.

Hart will remain number 1
it really is baffling how England continues to produce incredible talent across positions with every new generation of players (even though they're groomed in a somewhat talent-unfriendly Premiership!), yet somehow your keepers... I mean, how?

The problem is ENG have produced inferior players to what we had 10 years ago but no one wants to admit it, no matter how the so called golden generation flopped they were impressive players who won things at club level and European level but what we have now are a bunch of average wannabees.

Joe Hart is probably a little better than Paul Robinson but what we need is another Shilton or Seaman.

Gary Neville and Ashley Cole were far superior to what we have now, the only good thing is now we have quantity for once in terms of back up full backs compared to 10 years ago.

We had some of the best CB's of their generation in the world in 2006 with Campbell, Terry, Ferdinand, Carragher and also Ledley King and Woodgate before there injures were dam good too. Now we can't even take 4 to a tournament :(

Hargreaves, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Joe Cole were all technically superior to anything we have today and the problem was the system more than the players in their era.

We have more strikers to choose from now but lets face it 2006 was when it began to change for Rooney, he lossed his pace due to injuries and changed his style of play from being more similar to Messi when he would run at people and beat them. Injuries got to Owen too but lets face it at least he knew how to take his chances.

We need world class players again in a system that works and right now we have NEITHER.

Hart shouldn't be in the squad, and neither should Rooney.

Anyhow, the very wonderful Danny Baker gently expresses his disappointment :

England haven't reached any final since 1968 so I can't say I'm surprised that they've been knocked out again. I'm not even a little upset about it as long as Liverpool players don't get injured I don't care frankly LOL.

Good luck to Wales though. Glad they're doing well and congratulations to Iceland as well though my favourites for the trophy is Germany still, possibly France.

Ah well the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers started tonight

I'd like to see new names in the squad come September with the likes of Ward Prowse, Mark Noble coming in and the likes of Drinkwater need a place too. If fit even Andy Carroll simply because he offers something different for when teams sit deep and your looking to hit crosses.

Wales played the game of their lives and easily were the better team but sadly it's come at a cost of 3 players being suspended for the semi and now the task of beating Portugal might be too far for them especially as one of the suspended players is Aaron Ramsey.

I've been surprised how well the 3-5-2 formation is working for them and wondered in the past if England should adopt it like they used at times in Euro 96 & World Cup 98 especially with the attack minded full backs we have.

I figured it was a good time to ask right now before the result is known. What are your thoughts on Penalty Kicks? It feels to me like such an arbitrary way to win.
