UEFA Euro 2016 + Qualifiers

Jesus Christ, i'm too old for this shit!

@Alidar:

Well, when both teams play out a full game + Extension and neither side wins a result must be somehow produced. After 120 minutes of intense playing having the players run and fight for another 30 mins is just cruel so penalty kicks are a good way.

It is equally both mental and skill that decides it but it's the most nervewrecking thing to see and in this case, Germany vs. Italy it was especially brutal (i can't remember such an intense penalty kicks for a long time).

Couldn't watch. Walked around the blocks. Heard all the goals and misses anyway. It was almost like being in a stadium. #FootballInGermany

Btw... Germany's "can't win"-strain against Italy remains, despite what "experts" and news sites are saying. Matches that end in penalties are counted as draws.

I can't believe I witnessed Germany missing 3 pens in a shootout....And the gits still won

They should just go until players start dropping dead if they have to ;)
I mean, look, I get it. It's certainly at least a way to end a game, but I still feel it's flawed.

Other question, does anyone think scoring on a penalty kick should be harder? I realize now I'm just an American messing with the game, but I wonder what it would be like if they had to shoot from the top of the box instead. This is more for penalties that occur during the game. That penalty had way more of an impact than the handball itself would have. It also creates some bad incentives when it comes to trying to draw fouls inside the box (where the offensive team can be far more aggressive than the defensive team).

What do you mean top of the box? Shooting penalties from outside the box? In that case the goalkeeper would have it far easier to get the ball or chances would be much higher for a complete miss of the goal if aimed at the corners (just to see so many missed goals from experienced shooters should tell how difficult and intense these are).

Years ago there was the Golden Goal rule.. whoever scored first during the extension of the game won the match (Germany won the Eurocup 1996 this way) but it lead to an extremely defensive and this boring game as neither team would risk anything so the rule was abandoned rather quickly. So penaltiy shooting it is which suits me and most people just fine.. it's an extra dose of adrenaline at the very end of the game that can make or break heroes.. today it made a hero out of Jonas Hector (such a cool greek Hero name :p) who merely 6 years ago played in one of the lower leagues but i guess that's done forever ;)

That's why I was always wrong betting the quarter finals in a Trek homepage's betting competition.

Yeah, push it back. If not quite that far than at least far enough so it isn't an 80% success rate.

shootouts work simple as, you can't keep playing forever and the drama of it is heart stopping at times. I remember back in the day America trying to stamp their own version on the spot kicks and it was funny but too silly. Spot kicks require skill of nerves and the ability to place that ball deep in the corner I don't know where your getting the 80% number from, clearly you've never seen England take any.

I would like to see extra time change however to make the 1st half "Silver Goal" and then the 2nd half "Golden Goal" to make it stand out from the normal 90 minutes.

^ If Bale could nutmeg him onto scoring a wonderful solo 90th minute winner then I will be fine with a Wales win.

@SPCTRE and @Count Zero, I can't help it but I think I might be switching allegiance from Germany to France for the semifinal. France has got double the amount of Juventus players and Khedira is always injured anyway.

But most importantly I'm so tired of the German media again. It's like every time there's a major tournament there's this super-annoying narrative that Spiegel described so well today.

The media is so unashamedly partisan and creates this narrative that everybody in Germany automatically supports the German team. Because reasons and Germany totally isn't a diverse country where people can root for other countries, too? Ugh.

To quote the piece:
"Liebe italienische Nachbarn, ihr habt so oft gegen uns gejubelt", rief ARD-Kommentator Steffen Simon nach Deutschlands gewonnenem Elfmeterschießen gegen Italien. Welche Nachbarn meinte Simon?

I guess I'm not part of Germany then? Because I live here but don't automatically support Germany whenever the team plays? What about people with dual nationality? Or people who just don't like the current German team? Or people who like France?
Way to be an inclusive society...

In essence: Screw the German media. The football tournament coverage is embarrassing.

The football commentators here are really horrible, in almost any respect, not just the usual jingoism. I watched some qualifiers on English language livestreams just to get some respite from them. But the picture quality there usually sucks.

As for Germany vs. France I'm also torn. I like both teams. The French team finally got into groove and I enjoyed their game against Iceland a lot. Also, I don't want to see Griezmann cry if France loses. On the other hand, I really do want Germany to win the title, too.
In any case, I'm frustrated that this isn't actually the final. It sure feels like one.

Also, in before the Somme rematch jokes. ;)

most neutral observers will root for Wales, just to see #CR7amcry
I kind of want to see how far one can take the always ending in a draw thing.

I'll be rooting for Les Bleus on Sunday!

they have an amazing opportunity here after 98 - winning the World Cup on their home turf, now the Euro! :techman:

Our team play the final of the Euro every 16 years and every time it is in our country.
Someone is going to find that suspicious one day

I will have to find a nice place to watch the match on sunday :)
