Tron: Ares

The whole point of Cillian Murphy's appearance was to set up a return for Warner in TR3N. Dillinger Jr. was collaborating with his father the whole time, so they could take back control of Encom.

So there wasn't room for Warner to appear in the second film, but he would have in the third (which got stuck in development hell for so long that Boxleitner walked).
Huh, could've sworn I already said that.. ;)

I just want to know how they got that huge Recognizer out into the real world if the laser in the arcade basement is the ONLY one around of its kind. Or is it?

Yeah, I know, right? That's the one big loophope in the concept and where it all breaks down. One possibility is that the movie pulls an Inception, ie you're not really seeing the real world, but moreso a digital recreation of the real world, because I can't really see this working otherwise. If this were really the real world it's happening in, things would be manifesting itself more in a physical manner, not a digital one like we see here. We'd see them taking over computers, take over the traffic lights, ground traffic to a halt, override self-driving cars, etc. The very idea of a digital world bleeding into the real world just isn't physically possible in the way envisioned here, and IMHO makes it a hard sell.

IIRC, Clu was going to send that massive ship and his entire army through some portal to the other side in the last film.

If whatever the target projector he was going to use in the real world can handle all that, it can definitely handle a single Recognizer, I would think.

I honestly can't remember how that was going to work too clearly. It's been years since I last saw it.

All of the people who agreed with me that this is a problem must have been in the other thread. :)

Other thread? I only see one. I know there were initially two, but I think they got merged. Anyhow, I guess this must mean you and I agree.

Could be fun, I guess, but I find the entire premise a little problematic.

Same either CLU knew of a larger more industrial version of the laser that existed somewhere or was going to make one in the real world for his plans. I think it is mentioned but not shown.

I am keen for this movie but still disappointed about it not being a direct sequel to Legacy. I was hoping Sam and Quorra would be returning

It sounds like it isn't the only one. Greta Lee's character is described as having developed some "world changing technology".

This is a science fiction film, not a documentary. And you haven't seen the film, so how do you know they aren't taking over computers, traffic lights, Teslas, etc....?

 I see those things buzzing around Fortnite all the time. It has a decidedly DeLorean-with-Elephantitis feel to it...

Yes, I know it's a science-fiction, and and I'm going by what's seen in the trailer. Exactly everyone has seen the same thing, and I only know what I've seen and I feel it was disappointing. Is that allowed or are you going to knock me for being disappointed in it? And before you jump, It doesn't mean I'm dissing it, I'm speculating at how it the movie could have things evolve based on what we saw.

Admittedly, this is probably a scene from late in the movie when much has already transpired, and as you point out, it's likely possible it will have more of a physical layer to it in the beginning.

Speculation. You gotta try it sometime ;)

I'm not speculating aimlesslessly. It's called having an opinion on where a story could go. I wasn't even being harsh.

But hey, if the comment police is on duty, I'll put my hands up and step away from the keyboard and thread. Have it your way.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the problem is. The lazer in the first two movies turned physical people into digital beings in The Grid, so I would assume someone, it sounds like possibly Greta Lee's character, has found a way to do the opposite on larger scale.

Yup. No problem with that. It's when you can no make video game vehicles and weapons that just do things in the Real World that it starts to bend things.

Maybe something in the movie will totally make a real world light cycle trail and a floating recognizer the size of an office building make sense.

The whole foundational premise of TRON -- digitizing people into computers -- makes no sense! But there was a time when things didn't have to "make sense" in a sci-fi/fantasy film. I'm all for hard science in films, but if they want to sell me on something fantastical, that's fine with me. As long as it's a good story.

Note that it is physically impossible for ships to travel faster than the speed of light (the Alcubierre warp drive is fun, but doesn't work in the real world). We also can't turn people into energy, transport that energy somewhere distant, then re-assemble every one of their atoms into the original structure... especially if there's no receiver! Yet this doesn't impede our enjoyment of the namesake of this message board... (or maybe it IS a deal-breaker for some).

All good examples. But most of them follow the John Mulaney principle: "And then we figured it out!"

Everybody has a line of what is too fantastic and it's always in a different place. Transporters (and especially The Enemy Within transporters) have a kind of magic to them that would probably be too far if it hadn't been part of Star Trek for 60ish years. Warp drive is just "we figured out how to go fast" and if we knew the "we figured out" part then we'd actually have it. (Don't try and explain warp drive, because then you run into why it's impossible.)

Tron is just "My thoughts are now in the computer and it looks like this". That's not actually that ridiculous of a concept (whatever the practical implementation might require). (And don't forget, in Tron they were building a transporter.)

Tron Legacy gets messier when we put Quorra in the Real World. Where did that matter come from? It built a body. Even if it's a run of the mill human body, that's extraordinary. It didn't just reassemble an existing pattern. ("Reassemble an existing pattern" is totally easy, I'm really sure.)

Also Flynn took that laser equipment that in 1982 took up several stories and put it his basement without telling anyone! I gather it's nice to be rich.

But this is going to be constructing anti-grav and energy weapons based on the fact that these conceptual ideas behave this way in a video game. (From 1989.) Just... Because.

Still to be clear: I'll go. I'm... Not pessimistic. It would be a real kick in the head if THIS is the Tron that is an unmitigated success.
