Tremors: The series with Kevin Bacon

So I noticed no one has mentioned this yet. Kind of surprising that Kevin Bacon is going to come back with a television series from it. He said a few months back how he'd like to return to the franchise but it was assumed he meant a movie.

There’s a TV series in the works reviving the sci-fi franchise Tremors — and original star Kevin Bacon is back on board as an actor and executive producer.

Universal Cable Productions and Blumhouse Productions are developing a show based on the 1990 cult favorite about giant killer worms, a movie that spawned four direct-to-video sequels. There was a previous TV version, as well (the 13-episode Tremors: The Series that aired on SciFi Channel in 2003).

[...]

Earlier this year Bacon said he’d love to revisit the character. “I’d love to do something else with Tremors and revisit the character 25 years later,” he said. “Part of what’s great about that movie is there are next to no digital effects. The monsters are done with puppetry, and it’s still off, funny and scary — it’s a cool accomplishment.”

Eeeeh, not sure.

I liked the first three movies, the fourth was interesting in a way but stretching things a bit. I watched the fifth recently and although it was better than the 4th by a good margin and acted as a soft reboot...I think they're reaching the limits of this franchise.

The first series was abismal, even with Burt there each episode and guest stars, it was a complete failure and outright boring as hell. The 5th movie ignores it altogether and going straight back to TV after a good injection of new talent and effects is a stupid idea.

The first television series shouldn't be canonical. I remember watching three or so episodes of it and almost none of it had anything to do with the graboids themselves but mutated wild life.

The movies I did mostly like although I definitely agree the fourth one was a low point in the series and the fifth one was done on the way cheap. Still better than the fourth one and they made an effort with it.

I've only seen the first movie and the first TV series, both of which I enjoyed. I always thought it was a shame they hadn't been able to get Kevin Bacon back, so this has me very interested.

I've loved the first movie for years, but I was so disappointed with the first sequel back when it first came out that I never bothered to follow the others, or the TV series either. It's not really the kind of thing that needs to be a franchise. It's just an above average creature feature with underground worm monsters. The simplicity is kind of the point, building on it in any way only diminishes what made it work.

But I like Kevin Bacon. We'll see what become of this, if anything.

Saw "Tremors" when it opened, in a suburb of St. Louis, MO. Enjoyed it then, and still do, now. I can see some value in rebooting/revisiting, but I am not sure there is enough material for a TV Series. Maybe a mini-series concept with other's in the genre, like "Alligator!", "Snakes on a Plane", "The Deep", " I Know What Your Mama Did" (not really, but I hear things...) "Leviathan", "Piranha", and the like.

Each (original) movie, above, or others, could be formed into a rolling miniseries, like they did with The NBC Mystery Movie" when they aired' McMillan & Wife, Banacek, Cool Million, Madigan, Hec Ramsey, etc.

Yup, and the 5th movie tries to give it a fresh start with that in mind. They redesigned the monsters almost entirely with up to date CGI and it really works, just as a monster movie.

The sequels gave closure to most of the cast, the 5th one sets Burt up with a sort of career too by the end of it, so he's not a total mad hermit.

A final movie is as much as I would want to see, if they cast of the first movie came back to do something *really* good with it.

Kevin Bacon needs money that badly after The Following?

There is no need for this, five movies and a TV show based on a stupid (but great fun) crazy monster theme is neat, but really not needed at all. If he wants to come back and do another movie in the same continually then sure, but a semi reboot is not needed at all. I just watched the fifth one a few days ago, completely useless, but completely enjoyable.

This would be like ignoring 17 seasons of Stargate to do a reboot... oh.... Well it be like ignoring Aliens 3 and 4 to do a contain... oh right...

Can't we just make new movies?

Tremors TV series: the Burt Gummer parts were fun, and so were the monsters. Unfortunately the other characters were nonentities. Still worth watching (apart from the Burt-less last two episodes). I'd love if Bacon could motivate another go at a TV series, but I don't know if I'd be interested unless Burt played a part too.

I loved the original movie, but none of the sequels or the TV show (what little I saw of it) did a thing for me.
That first film is one of those are 'lighting in a bottle'/'perfect storm ' affairs. It really shouldn't have worked. It's naff b-movie material but through a solid cast with some excellent chemistry, clever effects work for the budget and just the right mix of comedy cheese, light hearted adventure and old school b-movie horror they somehow turned out something special.

As for this new show...I'll give it a shot but I'm not expecting anything special, even with his mighty Baconness.

I actually really loved the second movie. In fact I think it slightly edges out the original for me.

Honestly I barely remember anything about it other than it brought back Earl and Burt and they upped the comedy to near slapstick levels.
There may also have been little farting baby graboids with legs, but I may be thinking of the third film...also, wasn't there a prequel?

For a relatively obscure early 90's b-movie it sure inspired a lot of spin-offs. It's like the 'Highlander' of monster movies.

I think 2002's "Eight Legged Freaks" and the more recent "Grabbers", while not as good as the original Tremors, both captured its spirit better than at least Tremors 2 did. I have not seen the subsequent sequels.

How could no one ever like 'ass-blasters'?

And if Michael Gross isn't in it than there is no point. Kevin Bacon should go back to making movies o really stupid TV shows (Like the horrendous The Following')

Agreed, that first movie is one of those 'lightning in a bottle' rarities. When there is a special chemistry between the different aspects of a show. :techman:

The next three movies were interesting, but lacked that special chemistry.

Yeah, you're mixing up the sequels a bit, but you're right about Tremors 2 being more comedy focused. The first Tremors is a horror-comedy hybrid while Tremors 2 is a full-blown comedy some decent action scenes. A cheesy, campy comedy that's frigging hilarious. Rather than try to outdo the original, the sequel goes in a different direction and, IMHO, it succeeds brilliantly.

I've never watched 3-5 though. I have zero interest in them.

I tend to think of the original Tremors as in the same class as the original 'Gremlins' in terms of balancing horror and comedy without making it just an OTT splatter-fest.

It helps that all the characters are done in a believable way. It would have been so easy to play Val and Earl as stereotypical dumb hicks (or is it rednecks? Certain Americanisums elude me) and just played them as goofy and clueless, but instead they at least made them clever, if not terribly well read.

It because of that I think that I didn't think very highly of the sequels. They took the easy route and made fun of the material and made jokes at the expense of the characters instead of allowing the comedy to come naturally from the situations.
