The kind of idiots who would use "trekkie" as an insult would probably do the same with "trekker" if that term was more widely known, and these people think Trek fans (or indeed, sci fi fans in general) are nerdy, pathetic people. By quibbling over the correct term you want used to describe you as a devotee of a television show... it sort of gives them ammunition, does it not?Trekkie was always a term of insult toward Star Trek fans when I was a teen fan. When TNG came along, and it gained in popularity, I started hearing the term Trekker. It didn't seem to have as much stigma attached to it.
So I didn't mind being called a Trekker, therefore that is my vote.
