Trek Set Building and Filming

Re: Building Sets, old school.

It might be helpful for some to do internet research on what other ST fans have spent time and monies building their old school full size sets. It might prove helpful. I have heard that a New England fan club group have build a full size bridge set that traveled to Cons. Also a group called "USS Essex" built one for offline fan video VHS project. USS Excalibur (Vegas)has had it's problems but is still working on building sets. Their ideas might be greatly helpful and worth an email. I am told that building from set photos and not blueprints can be a major terrible problems in many size, color and prespective matters.

Re: Building Sets, old school.

Yeah, tell me about it, it's been a pain already.
God Bless CorelDraw, it can tell me the amount & cost of material down the last sq/mm.
I'll have a look at those that you've mentioned, see what i can find.

Finally got funding from the University for the location, also negotiations about putting in a 300amp power supply for lighting and cameras, and also for heating over the winter.
We're starting to design the alien prosthetics and drawing up designs for federation phasers, haven't decided whether to change them yet.
The script is 1/4 of the way there and the plot is pretty much sound.
They'll also be publicity involved from the Uni's PR department, as for what yet I'm not sure, but that's what I have to talk to them about.
Things are moving on...

Just wondering... why does the set have to be so large? Why not build something like the Defiant's bridge? What does the extra size gain you in terms of the story?

I kinda like the idea of a smaller bridge. It's more intimate for the drama. Closer and tighter spaces also help to convey a greater tension.

^ I agree with that. Larger sets also mean that you need more background players and it's easy to lose people in a large set.

there's several reasons really; i'm not too keen on the defiant bridge, i think it's too small, and if you take away the console's it's just a rectangular room, no differing levels, and people are all the same height, consoles are too small, etc.
IMO if you look at the Kirk films you tend to get this interplay where they walk around, there's more requirement to go over to other panels to see what's going on resulting in more screen time, and with the different levels there's more possibilities for complicated or longer shots, a shallow depth of field, better focus pulls, jib and tracking and room for steady cam stuff. It's for a Film Production course so I have to look at it from a filmic perspective, and what works and how much space I need to do it all in.
Unless I've got something wrong in my measurements, it's similar in size to the Ent-E bridge, the internal size is only about 12.5/13.0m. Anyone know any different?
