Trek Set Building and Filming

Just did a quick test of the basic layout using some of the new materials from my Odyssey conference room set and I must say I really like this configuration:

Shock Horror!

OMG! I nearly had a heart attack, you have no idea! I almost started crying its so good!

*jumps around like an overexcited child!*

My friends been following the thread too, he wants to marry you!
Thank you sooo much, you should have seen my attempt!
You've pretty much done the bit that was holding us up.
Your so talented! I'm buzzing! You genius!

Questions

Oh, and just a few questions of scale. I've only been working in 2D.
Whats the distance between the under side of the ceiling ring and the floor at the back of the bridge, and the floor to the underside of the lowest angled panel on the sides?
Whats the width of the doors cus i put them at 80cm in the diagram? I'm changing them to 110cm cus 80cm is just too thin I think.
And the height of the steps if you don't mind? I was gonna go with 6 inches.
Btw, great work. I'm envious.

Re: Questions

I will give you a tip on the bridge. I would make a very small. Look at the Defiant bridge and that should be the size you should make it. If you try to make a bridge like lennier1 Model - (Nice Model) The price would be very high. Its better to make a small bridge and put more time in the details, then make a very large...Bad looking bridge.

I understand what you mean, and personally I think the defiant bridge is the worst bridge in the history of star trek. It's like they've tried to cram too many characters into a set built for noddy and bigears, but I don't mean to start a fight, it's just my opinion.

I think if we thought we couldn't make something that big look fantastic, then we would make it smaller. But the main reason for the size is that i have to fit jib and tracking across the front and spider tracks up the steps for the cameras.
As far as I've worked out, whether its a big or small set there's not much cost in panelling the beams to create the floor space, most of the money is going to go on carpetting, perspex, electrical bills and finding a way to keep the roof up!

Re: Shock Horror!

Thanks but that just looks acceptable due to the use of global illumination. While it´s a true godsend for some exterior scenes it´s usually a pain in the a$$ when working with interiors. There´s also the little detail of meddling with stuff like this for close to six years.
Here are some additional pics and since I don´t work on a scale model but via the pixel size of the blueprint. Hope the pics still help. I had to use some quick&dirty tricks to make it easier to make out the details and the quality and look suffered in the process but for the moment it´s the overall proportions that matter.

PS: hope you don´t mind the TNG elements in this test but sometimes it´s just too tempting to combine neighboring eras (example). ;) And since the humanoid ragdoll that comes with 3DMAX looks just plain ugly I had to use the one from Cinema4D (just in case this looks familiar).

Wow! Nice stuff Michael, welcome to Trek BBS!

*scratches head* I thought you just told me you didn't have time for any more sets...

@others: sorry for the off/topic but it may still be of use to some.

^^ Thanks but I´ve been around here for a while (Actually it´s where I discovered HF). The console shape is an element from my model library and the rest was created in less than two hours. I needed something "lightweight" (easy on the CPU) to test the new materials for sickbay and the conference room since Craig was complaining about the old ones. Look closer at the elements. A wall material, a darker console material, light plates, shiny decorating strips and carpet/fabric surfaces. That´s what´s used throughout those sets as well but the test renders for this are three times faster, allowing to test more adjustments in less time. So nothing to worry there.

Aggro!

Could someone quote this for me, I hate not being able to put up images! Thanks.

LCARS

Anyone have any ideas; I'm desperatly trying to find a company that will print onto transparencies, the kind you get for overhead projectors, A4 would be fine, but bigger would be better. Its for LCARS so full colour.
To be mounted on perspex sheets and backlit.
It's a pain because they all seem happy printing leaflets and posters! Cheers.

Ending

If anyone wants to know the ending here it is;

ENDING:

INT: HYPERION - SICKBAY

Richard steps into the sickbay reception and stops dead in his tracks. Bodies, covered in sheets, line the floors shoulder to shoulder. He's overcome with a morbid feeling. He steps over them with the air of a far older man, tired, aged and weak. He breathes deeply but never seems to get enough air. He makes his way into the sickbay ward holding himself against the doorframe. More bodies cover the floors, inbetween the beds and into the office. He looks around at the dimly lit sickbay. An uncovered body moves on one of the biobeds. Richard frowns and takes a deep breath.

RICHARD
Susan?

There's no answer, but the body still moves. He speaks louder.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
Susan?!

SUSAN
Dick?

RICHARD
Yeah, It's me.

He makes his way slowly across to the biobed where susan lies, trying hard not to disturb any of the bodies on the floor. He grabs her hand and sits on a stool by the bed. She groans in pain and tears run down her the side of her face. Her other hand holds her chest.

SUSAN
(quietly)
It hurts.

She cringes. Richard shushes her, trying to calm her, but she squeeses his hand harder.

RICHARD
Just hold on for a...

He stops as he notices the hypospray on the edge of the bed.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
What's this?

She looks him in the eyes.

SUSAN
Morphene,
(pause)
...and a few other things.

RICHARD
There's enough here to kill you. What were
you thinking?

SUSAN
I couldn't do it. I wanted to but I c...

She shouts in pain and grabs her chest again, and Richards hand takes another squeezing. He grabs an empty hypospray from the side, pushes it down onto a vial. He presses it against her skin and injects it.

RICHARD
This can only help so much.

She relaxes a little.

SUSAN
I know. I don't want to die like Liz did.

Richard pretends that didn't hit him straight in the heart.

RICHARD
I won't do it.

SUSAN
I'm asking you to.

Richard looks down at the hypospray of Morphene, and takes a small breath.

RICHARD
(quietly)
Will it hurt?

SUSAN
No.

RICHARD
Are you lying?

Susan just looks into his eyes, and doesn't say a word. Richard sits and fights with his concience for a moment. He slips an arm under her back and pulls her up to his face. He looks dissapointed at what he's about to do.

RICHARD
Ready?

Susan smiles with tears in her eyes, and nods gently.

SUSAN
Thank you.

She takes a deep breath, and Richard injects it into her neck. She starts convulsing pulling in short sharp breaths. Richard pulls her close and holds her tight to his chest. Tears fall from his eyes as Susan's face drops, her eyes stare blankly and she stops convulsing.

Richard lowers her back down onto the biobed and switches off the monitor above. He stands there for a moment.

INT: HYPERION - BRIDGE

The turbolift doors whoosh open. Richard steps through and looks over to the science station.

RICHARD
Lakeland?

There's no answer.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
Lakeland?!

Again there's no answer. Richard makes his way over. Lakeland sits slumped over the science station, his face pressed against the panel, eyes open and motionless. The screen shows 'Virus Analysis In Progress'.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
Sweet dreams Lakeland.

He looks up and around at the dark empty bridge.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
Computer, open a channel to Admiral Saxbee, StarFleet
Command.

The computer beeps and chirps and the StarFleet Command logo appears on the view screen.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
Admiral.

SAXBEE
Richard...
(beat)
...what can I do for you?

RICHARD
I want to say thank you.

Richard makes his way to the Captain's chair and sits down.

SAXBEE
There's no need.

RICHARD
I'm running on a crew of one, Admiral.

The Admiral's face drops a little. Richard puts his hand to his chest and cringes a little.

SAXBEE
I see.
(beat)
Would you like me to stay...

RICHARD
No.

Richard coughs, and takes a deep breath.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
I'd prefer to be alone.

SAXBEE
Very well.

RICHARD
Good bye, John.

Saxbee nods.

RICHARD
Computer, end communication.

THE END

Re: Ending

Nice bit of work on the LCARS demo. I like the illuminating buttons as visual feedback.

Best of luck on the set construction.

Beautiful work, Lennier1! Cobbled together in only a couple of hours? Even more impressive! I couldn't do that kind of work in twice that time, even with elements existing in a library.

Re: Ending

Prototype costume design. The jacket's in progress...when I find the right colour.

Just helping you out since you don't have enough posts to display images just yet.

Set

Cheers.

I don't pretend to be good at 3D ;) so it's just for scale really.
The rear left console's to be replaced with the MSD, recomdendations welcome, I'll post more when I've finished it.
