T'pol and the neck pinch

Could not find a similar thread so forgive me if this topic has already been discussed...:shifty:

As I was reviewing the episodes for Enterprise I noticed something that just recently caught my attention. The neck pinch was widely shown across the Trekworld multiple times for Spock as well as others.

So how come they chose to not write many scenes for T'pol using the move? As far as I could remember there was only one episode.

Thoughts?

I could be wrong, it's been a while since I've watched a lot of Voyager episodes, but Tuvok didn't use it all that much. Did he?

BTW, which episode is it that you're remembering?

She used it on Travis in Strange New World and on Phlox in Singularity. I'm pretty sure she used it a couple of other times, but I can't recall for sure.

^ You're right, Jinx. I remember the same episodes. And I don't think she used it often. For example, I think it could've been used in Bound to show that Enterprise women aren't second class citizens reliant on men. I think it would've been a lot funnier and more interesting if T'Pol and Hoshi took down the Orions. Oh, well.

In addition to Singularity and Strange New World, T'Pol used the neck pinch in Carpenter Street and Hatchery.

There are probably more still, just can't think of them at this time.

Ah you guys are right.

I was under the impression that a Vulcan needed to have a certain amount of srength to do the move, which is why McCoy (via Spock's katra) was unable to do the move successfully in TSFS. I figured that since T'Pol was clearly not as strong as most Vulcan's, particularly an average Vulcan male, she would be unable to do it, but you guys proved me wrong

Well Archer was able to do it after geting Surak's katra in the Vulcan three parter in season 4.

Neck pinch seems like a technique that requires very little strength. Does it look like Spock is ever squeezing hard, trying to put any strength into it? It seems that one just needs to be skilled in which spot exactly to pinch to make the subject lose consciousness.

If it's a telepathic art, then perhaps T'Pol would have found using it distasteful? Vulcans of her era were apparently divided on how publicly one could use techniques such as mind meld; the controversy could have extended to nerve pinches, too.

OTOH, there's no statistical bias towards more or less pinches after "Fusion" where T'Pol first had to confront the telepathy taboos. Too bad...

I think it's a pressure point technique. You don't need to use a lot of pressure on a pressure point or nerve cluster to cause a lot of pain, for example. I'm guessing that the nerve pinch temporarily disrupts signals to the brain and that induces a loss of consciousness.
