TOP 5 TV theme songs...

Disney cartoons tend to have great theme songs. I agree about "Ducktales" and "Rescue Rangers". Absolutely classic. A few years ago I met a girl who had the latter as her cell phone ring tone. :) I loved "Tale Spin" and "Darkwing Duck" as well.

The difference being that the video Mr. Laser Beam linked to for the Dallas theme uses a cheap, muzak knock-off version that was never heard on television during the series' run.

1) True Blood (song: Jace Everett "Bad Things") - also one of the best opening credits

2) The Sopranos (song: Alabama 3 "Woke Up This Morning")

3) The 10th Kingdom (song: version of "Wishing on a Star" sung by Miriam Stockley - worked great for this fantasy drama/comedy mini-series)

4) Battlestar Galactica (2003-) one of Bear McCreary's great tunes for the show. Love the drums.

5) The Vice (song: Portishead "Sour Times", although the credits were short and just a part of the song was heard) - it worked perfectly for this dark British police drama of the late 1990s/early 2000s, unfortunately there is no video of the credits available online

top 10:

6) Murder One - awesome theme, very dramatic, unfortunately I can't find a video anywhere online

7) Rome - another one of HBO's great opening credits

8) Carnivale

9) Deadwood

10) Only Fools and Horses

Honorable mention: Millennium.

The only Trek opening theme that I would mention on this list is the theme of In the Mirror, Darkly (the opening sequence was also great and could have been a contender for best opening sequence).

Dishonorable mention: ENT and "Faith of the Heart" would probably win the worst theme song ever.

I don't think that any of Trek's regular opening themes would be strong contenders in this list, TOS' opening theme is entertaining but is not even in the same league as any of the ones above, and TNG, DS9 and VOY all had generic anthem-like themes that I find rather dull.

To whoever said that the original BSG's theme song was better than the new BSG's: no frakking way. The original BSG's theme song was yet another dull anthem-like tune (though a little less dull than most of Trek's). I hear enough of those at Olympic Games medal awards.

I'm thinking:

The A-Team

Dukes of Hazzard

TNG
Transformers

Quantum Leap

Saved By the Bell

MST3K
X-Files
CSI( all of them)

BSG( new one)

In no particular order.........

1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer
2. Babylon 5 (Season 5 opening w/voice clips from the first four seasons)
3. Stargate SG-1
4. Firefly (written by Joss Whedon)
5. Smallville

I tried searching YouTube but all of the versions of the theme that I found, used basically the same sounding one. If you've got a different one that's more authentic, I'd love to hear it.

Dr Who: All versions except the theme from Colin Bakers last season.
Battlestar Galactica: The original and the new version (except for the abortion that was used in the first season in the US)
Deep Space 9: The version used in later seasons.
True Blood: I can't stand the show but I love the opening theme and credits.
Home Improvement: It's not that great but I find myself going "Uuuhhh?" Every time Tim says it in the opening.

I'm not sure, but I think one of those links would have been good enough.

I have to admit, that as a good Cowboys fan, the Dallas opening makes me a little sad. I won't ever get to see Texas Stadium again. The Jerry Dome is great, but Texas Stadium held the iconic teams that won 5 Super Bowls, Troy Aikman, Rodger Stabach Tony Dorsett, Emitt Smith, so many others; and there was Tom Landry walking stoically up and down the sidelines.

Yeah, probably. The composer though was invited back each year to do a different arrangement of the theme for each new season, so each season wound up having a different, modified version of the song, which is why I included all of them.

Man, this is rough, I love a lot of theme songs. I can single out a couple.

Battlestar Galactica 2003 (never fast forwarded this)

Doctor Who

I have to think about the rest, I have about 500 runner ups to sort out.
