Top 10 Star Trek Novels?

Kirks Lovechild

Cadet
Newbie
I haven't read a Star Trek novel in years even though I do have a pretty big collection. I just finished a book and thought that it might be time to dive back into them. My only problem is I don't know where to start. My questions is, in your opinion, what are the top 10 Star Trek novels? It can be more than 10, but I just thought I would throw that number out there.

I've been talking to some friends and the titles I keep hearing are "Doctor's Orders", "Imzadi II", "Crossover", "Yesterday's Son", "Time for Yesterday", "Dreams of the Raven", and "Prime Directive". What do you think? Are those in the top 10? What titles would you add?

Prime Directive... that should be the next film....
Though "Yesterday's Son" & "Time for Yesterday" are awesome.....

Does anyone remember those 2 old pre-TMP books---
"The Price of the Pheonix" & "The Fate of the Pheonix"?
"SPOCK:Messiah" might be a good one too...

tmp books---

I'll take a crack at this, at least based on what I have read.
In no particular order:
Destiny: Lost Souls, Destiny: Mere Mortals, Strangers From the Sky, Q Squared, Vendetta,Unity, Imzadi, Articles of the Federation, Ex Machina, Rising Son, Vanguar: Reap the Whirlwind.

I am sure I am missing things and I will probably change my mind about what belongs in here by tomorrow. In fact I just noticed I missed Destiny: Gods of Night.

In No Particular Order:

1. Imzadi
2. Q-Squared
3. The Art of the Impossible
4. Federation
5. Vendetta
6. Serpents Among the Ruins
7. Full Circle
8. The Ashes of Eden
9. The Left Hand of Destiny (Books 1 & 2)
10. The Pandora Principle

Others Recommendations:
DS9
Objective: Bajor
Abyss
Unity
Avatar (Books 1 & 2)
Warpath (But I would read Worlds of DS9: Dominion and Ferenginar before it; it would probably be best to read all of the DS9 relaunch before reading Warpath actually)
A Stitch in Time (I never read this book, but it is highly recommended by many on this forum)

TNG:
A Death in Winter
Resistance
Greater than the Sum
Destiny Trilogy
The Devil's Heart

TOS
Cloak
The Rift
The Captain's Daughter
The Return

ENT
Last Full Measure
The Good that Men Do

There are a few lit-only Trek series you might enjoy: Starfleet Corps of Engineers, New Frontier, New Earth, Titan, Stargazer, Vanguard. I recommend New Frontiers, Titan, and Vanguard (Harbinger, the first novel at least)

Off the top of my head at the moment:

1. Destiny trilogy (ok, I cheat)
2. DS9: Mission Gamma (all four books, but book 1 was the best)
3. TOS: Crucible (book 1 and 2 are absolutely fabulous, I'm going through book 3 atm and enjoying it so far)
4. Lost Era: Serpents Among the Ruins
5. Lost Era: The Art of the Impossible
6. Titan: Orion's Hound
7. Titan: Sword of Damocles
8. Yesterday's Son & Time for Yesterday
9. Sarak
10. Articles of the Federation

Honourable mentions (because they didn't pop into my head fast enough):
- TNG: Greater than the Sum
- TNG: The buried age
- all the DS9 post finale books
- A burning house
- Q & A
- Metamorphosis

In order:

1. A Stitch in Time
2. Once Burned
3. Immortal Coil
4. Cathedral
5. Q-Squared

After those five, it's bit blurred. The following books all compete for the last five spots:

Vulcan's Heart
The Art of the Impossible
Terok Nor trilogy (but especially Day of the Vipers)
Reunion
The Eugenics Wars, Books 1 & 2
Rogue
Tales of the Dominion War
No Limits
Q-in-Law
Q&A
I, Q

It's interesting to note that all of my top five favorites are character pieces of my favorite characters (Garak, Data, Calhoun, Bashir, Q).

I agree with your top 10 list.

I'd tell the OP to take a grain of salt with all the Destiny recommendations you'll likely get. It was pretty good...but I think it's a tad over rated compared to how much people talk about it here.

I agree on that count. Hell, I didn't like the general direction of the story or the level of predictability of the trilogy. The only thing I liked about it is what has come after it: A Singular Destiny is a very good book.

Crucible book 1..McCoy
I dare any Star Trek fan to put that book down

Mine:
Prime Directive
Federation
Dark Mirror
How much for just the planet?
All Gateways
Challenger (This one is just awesome)
Ship of the Line
Imzadi
The Lost Era: The Art of the Impossible
Immortal Coil
oops, # 11 "Strangers From the Sky"
I'm well read with my Star Trek.....
