TMP Uniforms

I didn't actually mind them. There were various styles officers and crew could choose from, exactly who got to wear what colour was a little confusing, but all-in-all I think they were alright.

Anyone else agree?

I actually liked the TMP uniforms. I think they were kind of "realistic" for a futuristic space navy, but not something you'd want to wear on current-day Earth.

I read somewhere that Kirk's initial uniform wasn't a special admiral's uniform, but a formal dress uniform and that there were other versions of it in gray, tan, etc., for other personnel.

There were also a ton of different variant uniforms including body armor for security personnel.

I like the lines of the tunics, but I never liked the too open collars, and hated the untucked shirt look. The plastic navel was a cool ideas but blandly designed.

I agree, the TMP uniforms are cool. I wouldn't have minded if the colors were a little more vivid -- or if the bridge lighting had been brighter so the uniform colors hadn't been so washed out in those scenes -- but otherwise they certainly look a hell of a lot more practical, comfortable, and futuristic than the TWOK uniforms. The TWOK uniforms look like fancy dress out of a historical costume drama; the TMP uniforms look like something you could actually live and work in on a daily basis.

Love them! Very much!

From some early memos I saw, the idea was that the ranked crew could essentially choose their colours: ie. beige or blue/grey, with the division colours being shown by the round colour patch behind the insignia and the epaulets on some of the variations' shoulders. There are wardrobe shots of Decker and Chapel in beige, and other shots where they are in blue/grey. And we have the Rhaandarite ensign in blue/grey, even though many people higher in rank are in beige.

I always imagined Andorian officers would be more likely to choose a beige uniform, rather than blending in with the bluish fabric.

I also saw a memo that explained that the green version of the uniform was for starbase personnel, the brown for enlisted, and the white uniforms tended to be specialist tunics (medical, security, engineering outfits). Also mentioned was how crew could add personalized touches, eg. Spock's black collar (partly to protect Nimoy's "hero" uniform from makeup stains), Ilia's leisure robe with a unique "Deltan collar" (Saavik's version in ST II omitted the collar), the native Americans with their feathers and beaded braids, etc. Later, in TNG, this idea was continued with Worf's sash and Ro's earring.

I think, if TMP had spun off into a TV series, telemovies or a direct theatrical sequel, using the same uniforms, we'd have seen more of the personalizing of uniforms.

Weren't they really uncomfortable? I'm sure I saw it in one of the Shatner books?

Very. And, IIRC, David Gerrold related how a wardrobe assistant had to accompany him to the bathroom. ;)

But the "hero" costumes would have had sneaky tricks to aid the comfort of the main actors. (The fitted shoes were a logistical nightmare, but some of the background extras had footwear made of fabric-covered tennis shoes.) It would have been the extras wearing the uniforms made to withstand closeups that would have had the worst time. No inbuilt comfort tricks, but not important enough to have assistants on hand at all times.

I once got a close-up look at some of the TMP uniforms (including Kirk's Admiral uniform) at an exhibition and up-close they are really nice. Unfortunately they doesn't translate as well onscreen. Nonetheless I think they look more futuristic and more Star Trek than the retro historical look of the TWoK uniforms.

The TMP uniforms would have looked better with either a bit more colour in the set designs or a bit more colour in the uniforms themselves.

For me the only thing that really evoked the era was Uhura's hair. The rest I could dismiss as styles always being recycled in some measure or other.

TMP uniforms are actually my favorites right after the First Contact ones. I prefer the one Kirk's wearing in the group photo, with the flap that hangs down. I like that one better than the one Decker wears after the transporter accident, for obvious reasons.

The only uniform I liked was Kirk's admiral's uniform he wore up until the launch of the refitted Enterprise. Everything else was just, meh.

I liked them, but I thought if on the two piece versions they wore black trousers like in TWOK, it would have looked much better.

I've never been crazy about them. They look like space pajamas, and the colors are so muted. Star Trek was vibrant and colorful; Star Trek--The Motion Picture looked like Space: 1999.

Kirk's Admiral uniform is okay, though. Pike wears something very similar at the end of Star Trek (2009).

Part of the problem is that the process used to transfer film to video when TMP was first released on home video in the '80s tended to wash out the colors. So a generation of people who only saw the movie on home video grew up thinking of the colors as extremely muted. It wasn't until the Director's Edition that the original colors were restored, and while the uniform colors are still understated, they're not quite as drab as they appeared on home video (except in the bridge scenes, due to the low lighting that was needed to ensure all the monitor images were visible).
